brutal_chaos_··on Iran’s Internet Shutdown Hides a Deadly Crackdown
A woman in Iran would not be allowed to own a gun. Maybe men, if any people. We have cops cuffing you, throwing you in the back of their car, and leaving said car on train tracks to be hit by an on coming train (see Colorado police video gaining traction in the news). The cops (morality police) in Iran killed the poor woman for indecency. The cops in the US still act egregiously and we have guns. Guns will not help.
brutal_chaos_··on Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else
And would be eventually priced out by something like this.
brutal_chaos_··on Amazon fails to overturn New York City union election
I have parents, neither are in the tech sector, that believe this. I would say a fair number of people outside of tech believe this too. I have also used vocational rehabilitation services and they don't treat those jobs with such disrespect, but I definitely got the feeling some jobs are stepping stone jobs.
brutal_chaos_··on Fintech is making credit cards weirder
I disagree. As someone with a history of blowing past my debit card allotted overdraft amount (though more recently am much better), I think my history with a debit card would show that I was young and foolish, but I have learned better and I wouldn't be a problem now. But I'm only spit balling, you may have more insight to shoot this down.
brutal_chaos_··on Winamp is officially back because '90s nostalgia knows no bounds
What about with wine? I haven't tried, but could old 16bit apps run in wine on windows x64?
brutal_chaos_··on Amazon limits Plan B purchases after demand spike
>>many people who can get pregnant

>instead of

>>many women

>I wonder if that was deliberate

I grew up around gender queer and androgynous people and thus I am used to using they/them and people instead of classifying a group of people by their gender. So I naturally speak/write in a less gender classified way without deliberate intent and I see this writing as just that. (Though obviously that is my bias.)

brutal_chaos_··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
It could probably go something like this:

Juul the brand does not want to market to kids because laws, FDA, etc. Some incompetent VP of marketing wanted to quickly boost numbers, ethics be damned.

I don't mean to stick up for Juul, but it's not out of the realm of possibility considering how incompetent the company sounds from the above.

brutal_chaos_··on Ask HN: How can I play TENET backwards?
This can be done with ffmpeg and it's "reverse" filter, it seems, according to:

https://video.stackexchange.com/a/35262

brutal_chaos_··on Safari is crippling the mobile market, and we never even noticed
Oh, we've noticed. Apple doesn't care.
brutal_chaos_··on Tell HN: I haven’t been to a search engine website in almost a year
You still "went to" a search engine within the last year, just using a non-visual document rendering user agent. DDG logs (if there are any) would still show you were there, just not with a typical browser.
brutal_chaos_··on Google terminated our Developer Account, says it is “associated”
Just a friendly reminder for Google users, backup your cloud data before you can't.

brutal_chaos_··on ‘Pro’ has lost all meaning, and Apple knows it
Marketing is feel good wording, usually nothing of real value or substance. So words like "Pro" and "Premium" come off as "classy," but in no way shape or form reflect upon the quality or content of what's being marketed. It's all hot air to swindle you into spending your tendies.

Sometimes companies do use "Pro" or "Premium" to separate product lines and usually the puffed up one might have more features, which is where trust in Pro/Premium comes from (probably), however, eventually the terms become meaningless as product lines merge, situations like in this article occur, and don't forget the companies that just slap those words onto things to make whatever they're selling just seem better than they are ("premium" sound quality on $8 earbuds for example. wtf?).

maybe I'm just getting old and cynical...

brutal_chaos_··on Ukraine calls on hacker underground to defend against Russia
We hear you.
brutal_chaos_··on Big tech makes a big bet: Offices are still the future
I think we should work in offices with the ability to work remotely when necessary and(/or) if we choose. I don't like needing to find the perfect spot to setup my desk where my company isn't looking into my home. I don't like having a company laptop that at any given time could be listening in on family conversations. I don't like the idea of my company seeing my child struggle through LGBTQQIA+ issues because I happen to have a work camera at home. I like and enjoy my privacy. I want offices to still be a thing.
brutal_chaos_··on How to speed up the Rust compiler in 2022
I tried....and it didn't work.

Thank you. I appreciate the description of what was tried and didn't work or didn't work as well as hoped. We need more of this so I don't waste time (or you don't too).

brutal_chaos_··on Version 100 in Chrome and Firefox
Development seems to be moving in that direction already (see market share per browser and the number of "Chrome only" sites). How would removing UAs continue or hinder that trend?
brutal_chaos_··on Woob: Web Outside of Browsers
This is clever and fantastic. I have been pondering a similar concept recently and I think I would like to contribute. I'm curious as to why LGPL-3 was chosen as the license, though, not that the license is a show stopper.
brutal_chaos_··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
You know what, I was unintentionally fear mongering. I'm glad you and others pointed that out. I did not make the connection between you having Omicron and the lack of Omicron in the paper (my nephew caught Delta...so that's where my concern lied). I hope you are still ok. :)
brutal_chaos_··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
One might want to pay attention if the boat had a leak...

I do apologize if you took that as fear mongering, I have a nephew in a similar situation as you and we are keeping an eye on him just in case anything does come up, not that we expect anything will.

brutal_chaos_··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
Granted this still needs peer review...but you may want to look into this:

https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-1139035/v1

I hope your recovery goes well and you truly have zero issues.

brutal_chaos_··on FAQ: Norton Crypto
I'm anticipating an, "oops, we didn't mean to enable this by default; thanks for your compute time. Apply for a rebate [here]." notice at some point...
brutal_chaos_··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
I really like the concept so I gave your PWA a try. The first recipe I tried[1] did not work as the app said it was unable to find a recipe. The wording also went down past the bottom of the screen, but I was unable to scroll to see the rest of the text. I used the "Desktop site" option my browser has and then was able to read the full message.

brutal_chaos_··on "Widevine Dump":Leaked Code Downloads HD Video from Disney+, Amazon, and Netflix
https://github.com/widevinedump/NETFLIX-DL-6.0 seems to have just been replaced with https://github.com/widevinedump/NETFLIX-DL-6.1.0

Due to a bad connection the 6.0 clone didn't finish. So, naturally, I tried again and was receiving a login prompt....so I go to the URI in a browser and ... 404. But the 6.1 repo was available...

brutal_chaos_··on This Year in Matrix
> including radically improved analytics (for those who opt in!)

Thank you so much for making analytics opt in. :)

brutal_chaos_··on Google Drive may restrict files identified as violating ToS
Perhaps one should encrypt files before uploading to cloud services. Sure it destroys the possibility of webview for your data, but then you don't have to worry about situations like this.
brutal_chaos_··on What is Web3? Interview with Gavin Wood, who coined the term in 2014
Claiming Web7. :)
brutal_chaos_··on Firefox Profilemaker
This is for the privacy focused. Telemetry is not.
brutal_chaos_··on Tell HN: If you use Verizon, opt out of “Custom Experience”
What provider doesn't do this? Has any said they never would (or have acted in this regard)? I'm all for getting on the anti-VZW bandwagon, but realistically, what are your options?
brutal_chaos_··on Tell HN: If you use Verizon, opt out of “Custom Experience”
I'm on a Verizon phone currently and that link gives me a 404. Perhaps the service hasn't rolled out to everyone yet?
brutal_chaos_··on Pixel prevented me from calling 911
Sometimes you just don't have that choice.
