Fascinating to see this today! Things I found interesting to consider:

- They are integrating NFTs into their marketing (to some this is amazing; to others kind of the opposite)

- The default look goes all the way back, it seems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTrwP2eDRKQ

- QMMP, similar to WinAMP with a lot of nice features, has a Qt 6 branch that is stable now http://qmmp.ylsoftware.com/

My top 5 favorite WinAmp / QMMP skins:

- Benuamp Silver https://archive.org/details/winampskin_BenuAmp_Silver

- nuance-green https://archive.org/details/winampskin_nuance_green

- LightWave8 https://archive.org/details/winampskin_LightWave8

- DarkPi v2 https://archive.org/details/winampskin_DarkPi_v2

No. Because a goog SW is a good SW. I want to listen to my music in a particular order. I do not want the SW to search for media files ( i don't want my porn collection in the playlist). Winamp and xmms do what a player shall do: play.

I think lots of 90s software for windows 98, etc. is lost. ( can't be run on modern 64-bit windows)

What about with wine? I haven't tried, but could old 16bit apps run in wine on windows x64?

Winamp is 32 bit

That's not why a lot of software is lost. A lot of software is lost because nobody bothered to back it up. There are many ways around not being able to run a program on modern Windows.

Now days you can't back up someone's software, even if you want to. ( Because of DRM and cloud.) And problem will only get worse. To prevent software entropy and rot it should be built on healthy foundation.

With the exception of cloud gaming (which is a particularly nasty thing for preservation), fortunately people still back them up anyway. It's not ideal because cracking is not a 1:1 binary in a preservation sense, but fortunately in many cases the original media can be backed up 1:1 and any necessary crack can be distributed for separate installation. Even if a pre-cracked version is the only thing that survives long term, it's still better than nothing.

xmmp is nice but I wish we had Linamp ... because I don't want to use Windows and Winamp was the best media player ever made.
