brotherjerky··on Greenland is a beautiful nightmare
Poked around your site and enjoyed it, please post more
brotherjerky··on Claude Code IDE integration for Emacs
Anyone have good results with something similar for Neovim?
brotherjerky··on *@gmail.com
I have my last name at Gmail, and the number of people who think it's their email is absurd
brotherjerky··on Neovim 0.9
We are stuck with the app images now it seems
brotherjerky··on The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal
> The estimated salary for a computer programmer is $62,420 per year in Brazil, IN

Uh, this is almost certainly data for the US city of Brazil, Indiana https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil,_Indiana -- not the country of Brazil

brotherjerky··on My experience with NixOS
Can you share the passthrough setup?
brotherjerky··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
Sounds very similar to how Coda works: https://coda.io
brotherjerky··on New York’s Elevators Define the City (2016)
> NYC has 8.5 million people who probably average 50+ flights a day in elevators

This is hard to believe

brotherjerky··on Unpatched routers being used to build vast proxy army, spy on networks
After the last one of these articles, I finally flashed my router with OpenWRT, and it's been pretty nice so far. Best feature: Installed `adblock` package, and now I get DNS-level ad blocking, which is simply fantastic. Works on all clients (including mobile) and significantly faster than blocking in browser.
brotherjerky··on Kitty – a fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
Used (and enjoyed it) -- just wish it were in Debian Stable (or backports) already.
brotherjerky··on Using FOIA Data and Unix to halve major source of parking tickets
It's not a small inconvenience for cyclists, it's a large decrease in safety
brotherjerky··on The Surface Book 2 is everything the MacBook Pro should be
Link? I'll throw in $100 right now
brotherjerky··on Ask HN: How did you transition from Mac to Linux?
Install VirtualBox or similar and setup Ubuntu in a VM. Try running that full screen for a while as an easy low-risk way to start kicking the tires.
brotherjerky··on Fieldbook is shutting down
> 1. Raised $2.9m, 4 employees, 5 years. Let's say 2/3 of overhead was salary, which seems reasonable. So that's 500k each, or 100k/yr. This seems excessive? Were the founders paying themselves too much? Or where did the money go?

This comment is so naive that I don't know where to begin. You can't hire any quality people at $100k / yr fully loaded in SF Bay area.

brotherjerky··on Perkeep – Open-source data modeling, storing, search, sharing and synchronizing
So is this ready for prime time yet? I used to follow camlistore, and it was still a little rough even for CLI nerds.
brotherjerky··on 'Neopets': Inside Look at Early 2000s Internet Girl Culture
Was this really just girls? I knew plenty of guys who played as well.
brotherjerky··on The Lil License
Obvious XKCD is obvious: https://xkcd.com/927/

I really admire the goals here, and I read through the FAQ ... but I feel like this just adds to the noise.

As much as a respect Jeremy, I'd be a little cautious about using this text written by a non-lawyer.

brotherjerky··on Introducing Atom-IDE
Yes, this is the best part. Joint effort makes all editors better for tooling.
brotherjerky··on 1Password CLI public beta
Been waiting for this a long, long time. Exciting!
brotherjerky··on Caddy 0.10 Released
Is there an official Docker image yet?
brotherjerky··on There are 19 types of smile but only six are for happiness
This article desperately needs pictures. I'm sure at some point someone will collect them all and post another version.
brotherjerky··on Containers vs. Zones vs. Jails vs. VMs
As a novice, this was a great informative read. More posts like this on the Internet, please!
brotherjerky··on Electronics banned from cabins on some Middle Eastern flights to U.S
There is no way you should check your laptop, baggage handlers are notorious for stealing. This will be brutal for business travelers.
brotherjerky··on Syncthing Usage Data
Where can I read about the swarm capability? I'm searching for something like how BTSync worked, but I don't see how Syncthing does this. It seems like one to one sharing, per: https://forum.syncthing.net/t/can-i-use-synthing-to-distribu...
brotherjerky··on In Video, Uber CEO Argues with Driver Over Falling Fares
Perhaps they need to hire Sally Yates or John Ashcroft to get to the bottom of this now?
brotherjerky··on Heating houses with high performance servers
In theory, any heat generated without computation is a waste. I'm sure it's pretty tough to actually make that work at scale, so excited to see this!
brotherjerky··on (Ab)using Google's Chromium EC for your own projects [pdf]
I can't say I understand any of this, but I like seeing this type of deep technical content on HN.
brotherjerky··on SQLITE: JSON1 Extension
Anything specific about their tests? I found this doc: http://www.sqlite.org/testing.html
brotherjerky··on Statement from Mozilla on US Immigration Ban
> the ban will create a barrier to innovation, economic development and global impact. Immigrants bring world class skills and expertise to build advanced technology that can improve the lives of people everywhere.

Perhaps this will happen on its own, but if companies are really worried about this, they should have more remote offices (I know Mozilla is remote-friendly, I'm talking in general).

Those are the optics that Trump cares about, job numbers. If tech can get the narrative that job growth will be outside the US w/o skilled immigrants, perhaps that will resonate?

brotherjerky··on Taxi Medallion Prices Are Plummeting, Endangering Loans
Of course, it's unfortunate that a person can end up losing a financial bet -- it can definitely ruin lives.

... but in this case, these things were so valuable because they were severely constricted. Competition was restricted which means consumer prices are higher. Sure, perhaps that's measured in cents per ride, but it was still a tax levied on all drivers going to a small, lucky few.
