bromonkey··on Ask HN: Can I fork my open-source project I created under an employer?
All that "trouble" and "money" will pale in comparison to when a legal notice hits your desk/mailbox.
bromonkey··on Pijul: A intuitive VCS unlike Git that's based on sound theory of patches
Just an FYI that GitX won't work on an up to date Mac
bromonkey··on Dream Vendor "Canna_Bars" Sentenced to Prison
Nah mate, you just aren't informed or experienced on this topic.
bromonkey··on Btrfs Coming to Fedora 33
*zfs on Linux
bromonkey··on Ask HN: Advanced Linux users, which distribution do you run? Why?
Arch Linux mainly because of the AUR.
bromonkey··on Microsoft removes manual deferrals from Windows Update 'to prevent confusion'
The Microsoft ignore updates is only temporary though isn't it?
bromonkey··on Microsoft removes manual deferrals from Windows Update 'to prevent confusion'
Mac won't literally forcibly reboot your machine though if you aren't sitting there to click "no." You can also use `softwareupdate --ignore` on Mac to shut off the notification. I'm not aware of anything equivalent on Windows.
bromonkey··on ARM Macs and Virtualization: It's going to be great
Can't take my workstation hiking or traveling.
bromonkey··on GitHub's new buttons look like they are disabled or like labels
the cli interface doesn't change ;)
bromonkey··on How CFEngine stays ahead of the pack
This is a name I haven't heard in several years.
bromonkey··on FreeBSD 11.4
Rolled up to 11.4 a bit ago, easy and painless as ever. Thanks to all the devs that put time into this OS.
bromonkey··on WD Red DM-SMR Update: 3 Vendors Bail and WD Knew of ZFS Issues
Dedup is a pretty niche use case for most people.
bromonkey··on WD Red DM-SMR Update: 3 Vendors Bail and WD Knew of ZFS Issues
Oh I'll get right on downloading that to my FreeBSD storage boxes, oh wait a minute.....
bromonkey··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
Arch Linux still runs great on the 2013 MacBooks (if you don't need any Mac only software.)
bromonkey··on What Microsoft got right about power users, but not quite
"It doesn’t have no syntax highlighting," ...[scrolls down] (Blockchain engineer): ahhhhh, ok

All jokes aside, author: "no" should be "any" in this sentence. Double negatives are rarely used in English.

bromonkey··on People who use BSD as their desktop os, why do you choose BSD over Linux?
because root on ZFS (for Linux) is a painful endeavour that is best avoided
bromonkey··on Ask HN: What programming skills are required by HFT or Trading firms
I started learning kernel internals from these books, I highly recommend all of them.

Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces (free online) - Arpaci-Dusseau

Linux Device Drivers, 3rd ed (o'Reilly) - Jonathan Corbet

The Linux Programming Interface - Michael Kerrisk

The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System (2nd ed) - McKusick, McKusick, Watson

Solaris Internals - McDougall, Richard, Mauro

bromonkey··on Ask HN: What programming skills are required by HFT or Trading firms
`Linux should be a solved problem right now`

This is a joke right? Unix is not even a solved problem and it's been around 50+ years.

bromonkey··on Let's guess what Google requires in 14 days or they kill our extension
Yep, the three clicks it takes to disable that really drives me nuts.
bromonkey··on Linus: Don't Use ZFS
"Don't use ZFS. It's that simple. It was always more of a buzzword than anything else, I feel, and the licensing issues just make it a non-starter for me." - Linus

I have a strong feeling Linus has never actually used ZFS.

bromonkey··on Intel, Lenovo spread foldable computer fever at CES
I'm over here just wanting a laptop that isn't so thin it feels like it's going to snap in half every time I pick it up and has a battery that lets it run for more than 5 hours. Maybe one day the future will bless us with computers that are portable and usable.
bromonkey··on Dutch university hit by cyber attack on its Windows systems
What orifice did you pull that stat from?
bromonkey··on Oracle Product Manager Claims He Was Forced Out for Refusing to Sell Vaporware
Good, Oracle lies about their products all the time. They did it to my company when we bought software licenses and I'm sure they do it to others.
bromonkey··on Ask HN: What are some fun projects to try out on a spare Linux file server?
2. = Buys CD, gets no FLAC: choices are as follows; 1.) dl FLAC rip 2.) waste my time repeating work someone has already done

bromonkey··on The sorry state of OpenSSL usability (2017)
manpages for openssl (`man openssl`) exist on Linux + Solaris + BSD, this seems like a mac usability issue to me...
bromonkey··on Ask HN: What overlooked class of tools should a self-taught programmer look into

  man bash
  man awk
  man sed

You can also do most of this stuff with Perl one liners if that suits your fancy.
