brokenmachine··on Our position on open-weights models
Which of those country examples have AI being used as a means of economic and military control and coercion?

Ukraine and Iran, no. I'm not familiar with the others.

brokenmachine··on Our position on open-weights models
And here I was thinking that all of those had nothing to do with AI.
brokenmachine··on Our position on open-weights models
What exactly happens to a "losing" country when it has been AI "dominated"?
brokenmachine··on Android may soon restrict on-device ADB
You have a throwaway account?

Can't have that! We wouldn't have any data to sell!

We need ID, email verification address, phone number, and a selfie of yourself holding a handwritten sign saying, "I love <useless company #7983>" now.

And you have to do a captcha at every step. Click on every crosswalk, sucker.

Lemmy is pretty good.
brokenmachine··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
Don't give up yet.

Lemmy is good, but not enough people on there for network effect to kick in yet.

I think once the enshittification gets too bad for even the average person, people will look for alternatives, and old style forums will return.

Although with all the ID verification, those forums might end up on Tor or something.

>I gave up on it years ago when they killed off 3rd party clients

Revanced.

brokenmachine··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
What do you mean it's defunct?

I use old.reddit.com all the time.

If old.reddit.com goes, I'm done with reddit.

I might try out some kind of alternative front end from https://github.com/mendel5/alternative-front-ends#reddit though.

But if that's not good enough, I'm done.

brokenmachine··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
My uninformed guess as a non-murican would be that it's just zoned as a business.

I doubt there would be a special zoning category exclusively for strip clubs.

brokenmachine··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
Well, there's a lot of things you can expect from Apple customers.
brokenmachine··on I wrote an bash enumerator because I was sick of xargs
I'm not new to command line tools, but I somehow managed to delete ~10k pictures while trying to use parallel to resize them.

I forget the details but it was some kind of surprisingly weird foot-gun behavior.

Luckily I had a backup, but it really has made me scared to try using parallel again.

brokenmachine··on AI's Affordability Crisis
How large is a model, like Mythos for example? Multiple Tb?

If that happened, what would people need to run it?

brokenmachine··on I make good money. Why do I still feel like this?
What's odd to me is that companies don't seem to be targeting the niche anymore?

When there's no cheap but ok product, common sense would dictate that somebody would try to fill that niche.

Is everything a monopoly now?

brokenmachine··on The AirPods Effect
Australian public transport is pretty good in my experience. I certainly don't expect to be stabbed or sit in piss.
brokenmachine··on ChatGPT's image generator can be manipulated to produce violent, sexual content
I feel like I've seen that creepy image on 4chan or reddit before.
brokenmachine··on ChatGPT's image generator can be manipulated to produce violent, sexual content
Great rant. Agreed on all points. Bravo.
brokenmachine··on Anthropic confident of re-enabling Mythos, Fable 5 access 'in coming days'
I guess they paid the extortion fee. I wonder how many Trump phones they had to buy.
brokenmachine··on Ukraine targets specialized components to keep Russian refineries shut longer
Are those expats allowed to freely express their views on the matter?

You might as well just quote Russian poll results.

brokenmachine··on Ukraine targets specialized components to keep Russian refineries shut longer
You're the one who called it punishing. It's just doing business with who you want.

It's just dumb for Russia to do it when they have so few cards to play.

Originally I thought you were talking about military "punishing".

brokenmachine··on Nobody clicks your share buttons
That hasn't worked for me in a lot of instances, and still copies a lot of tracking info.
brokenmachine··on 'Wow, it really worked ': 70s TV show causing worldwide panic today
I'm Australian but I downloaded that show to listen to it.

It was surreal hearing him say, "we're under attack" when the second plane hit.

He did a great job.

The bank makes money on chargebacks, so they have an incentive to allow a certain level of scams.

Seems fine to me. The US is representing their interests, just as Russia does. I believe Russia has put sanctions on the US as well.

Russia has their good friends like North Korea and Iran to depend on.

If they want new friends, maybe they could reconsider their foreign policy.

brokenmachine··on AI is potentially a Dunning-Kruger effect amplifier
They believe the marketing.

Billionaire hype men couldn't be wrong, could they? Otherwise how could they get so rich??

brokenmachine··on AI is potentially a Dunning-Kruger effect amplifier
You might be doing the same thing, if you think that your medical professional father would have any understanding of how an LLM works, an area in which he has no expertise.

To him, and most other people who don't know anything about the tech and how it works, it's probably just a magic intelligent box that can answer many things that he can't.

The marketing says it's this close to AGI and taking all our jobs, so that must be true!

brokenmachine··on AI is potentially a Dunning-Kruger effect amplifier
I'm exactly the same, but unfortunately I think we're in the minority.

People are absolutely dying to outsource their thinking.

brokenmachine··on Ukraine targets specialized components to keep Russian refineries shut longer
Unpunished is an odd choice of words.

Why shouldn't "the West", actually many separate autonomous countries, be able to sell to whoever they want?

Literally nobody is interested in invading Russia. Nobody wants any part of that shitshow.

Russia needs to start worrying about their own internal problems, which are both significant and numerous.
