brohoolio··on Cancer-Linked Chemicals Manufactured by 3M Are Turning Up in Drinking Water
Yup.
brohoolio··on Cancer-Linked Chemicals Manufactured by 3M Are Turning Up in Drinking Water
There’s an auto supplier upstream of my town that was dumping PFAs into the drain. It’s containminated the whole river and all the lakes. The river is where my town gets our drinking water.

They are installing carbon filters which should help. I use a carbon filter for all our water.

The thing is we have a dixione plume approaching our water intake too.

The parts per trillion is kinda mind blowing too. Take a large pool, let’s say 40,000 gallons. There’s 90,000 drops per gallon. So your pool is made of 3.6 billion drops of water.

It takes .0036 drops of this stuff to raise your pools concentration to 1 part per trillion. That means a quarter of a drop of this stuff will turn the pool into something that is above EPA limits.

It’s insane and mind blowing.

brohoolio··on When Trump Phones Friends, the Chinese and the Russians Listen and Learn
There are other articles talking about how many stingray devices there are in Washington DC owned by foreign governments.
brohoolio··on When Trump Phones Friends, the Chinese and the Russians Listen and Learn
It’s amazing that I know all this. Like that the president has multiple iphones, he likes to call multiple friends, that foreign governments listen in.

If this was Hillary the republicans would impeach her right away for endangering the country. They should do the same to Trump.

brohoolio··on Will Tech Leave Detroit in the Dust?
Detroit’s big 3 are working on self-driving and electrication. GM is leading the bunch, but all three are pouring billions into it. I wouldn’t call spending billions as “not much”.

brohoolio··on Children poisoned by lead on U.S. Army bases
It doesn’t force remediation for lead paint, it indicates only deteriorating paint is addressed.
brohoolio··on Children poisoned by lead on U.S. Army bases
No one is getting a free pass. The article discusses private landlords.
brohoolio··on A Texas-Sized Pavement Problem
The writers are highlighting a potential weakness with the Texas system. It’s not about identity politics or red vs blue. It’s about future costs that might be unsustainable.

NYC transit has it’s own issues, but if you look at the population there you’ll see on average they are skinnier than folks in Texas who drive around in cars. Are there costs associated with that obesity? Costs that everyone picks up instead of just those who are obese? Will that make Texas a more expensive place to live? Who knows?

As someone who lives in the suburbs and just got hit with a water rate increase to pay for the aging infrastructure i can say it’s good to have these conversations early before you rack up unexpected costs.

brohoolio··on EPA's proposed new rule would allow it to ignore the best available science
It’s alarmist because people will die because of this rule.

If you get cancer because of a chemical spill do you want all of your personal information released to help prove that the chemicals spilled poisoned you? No. You want your personal data protected.

brohoolio··on Losing 100 pounds in 276 days
Congrats! This is a great achievement. It’s not easy. Don’t let up! Maintenance of your current weight can be just as tough.
brohoolio··on How the gig economy is making life harder for North American workers
What’s going to happen to gig wages when the economy hits a recession?
brohoolio··on Los Angeles spending $40K/mile painting city streets white to combat climate chg
Let’s say a home every 80 feet. That’s 132 homes per mile. Over 7 years that’s $40 per year. I wonder if it makes the neighborhood 10 cents per house per day nicer. I haven’t lived in the LA heat.
brohoolio··on Los Angeles spending $40K/mile painting city streets white to combat climate chg
“Construct a new 2-lane undivided road — about $2 million to $3 million per mile in rural areas, about $3 million to $5 million in urban areas. Construct a new 4-lane highway — $4 million to $6 million per mile in rural and suburban areas, $8 million to $10 million per mile in urban areas.”

$40k isn’t cheap but it’s a fraction of the cost of the roads. I can see the value of experimentation.

Just imagine if it reduced crime. A charge that puts someone in jail for a year costs society well over $40k. Heat definitely can lead to anger, riots etc.

brohoolio··on How to Level the College Playing Field
Definitely an interesting piece.

While college has the potential to be a great equalizer, society needs to focus on the school system before kids reach college.

Teachers walked out in three states because they are so underpaid. Teacher have second or third jobs.

You want everyone to have an equal footing? Let’s adequately fund our education from k-12. And while we are at it let’s have some universal pre-k.

If we do both, we can have a more merit based society. If we just focus on colleges, it won’t solve root cause.

brohoolio··on Why are diapers so expensive?
12 changes a day is not an outlier for a newborn, it’s normal. My son is 18 months and we change him probably 6 times a day at least.

Diaper pricing is dependent on how many you buy at once, I buy giant boxes so my unit cost is low. If you don’t have $40 to buy the giant box, but only $10 to buy a small package. You are paying twice the unit cost.

Philando Castile Was Pulled Over 49 Times in 13 Years, Often for Minor Infractions

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/17/us/before-philando-castil...

I can’t even remember the last time I’ve been pulled over. Maybe 10-15 years ago. I’m a decent driver but I’ll go on the record that I occasionally go over the speed limit and forget to signal.

brohoolio··on Failed intercept at Dhahran caused by a software error in handling of timestamps
This is depressing. One of my middle school classmates had a brother killed in a SCUD strike.
brohoolio··on How did Google Talk change from a dream to a nightmare?
I have a folder on my iPhone for all the various google chat apps, allo, duo, hangouts, meet and the list goes on and on.

Not an application, but a whole folder filled with chat applications!

All my friend have moved onto slack.

brohoolio··on Backpackers, Don't Listen to Slate: Science Does Support Stream Water Treatment
I suspect that there is a difference in risk between various specific spots in Switzerland and American at large.

I’d never drink untreated water in Michigan. Michigan was a giant swamp. Near the top of a summit in Switzerland with no livestock nearby? Sure.

brohoolio··on Strava heatmap can be used to locate military bases
The most interesting thing I stumbled across so far is Detroit, where people don't run in huge swaths of the neighborhoods. I'm familiar with the city so I expected dead zones, but nothing like this.

brohoolio··on Amazon announces candidate cities for HQ2
The Metro-Detroit area voted down a public transit system a year or two ago. Public transit was one of the requirements that Amazon laid out.
brohoolio··on Ocean's Oxygen Starts Running Low (2016)
We fixed the ozone layer and stopped acid rain. We can fix this. It just takes commitment.
brohoolio··on As Flow of Foreign Students Wanes, U.S. Universities Feel the Sting
Trump is going to ruin the American economy.

Attack universities by discouraging foreign students. Cut federal funding for research. Encourage political attacks on universities. The most damaging will be not forgiving student loans from people who went to scam universities, like Trump university.

What Trump and others don’t recognize is that the American university system is a distributed system of factories that manufacture knowledge, innovation and the future.

Just look at self driving cars. Much of the tech and the talent came from various universities.

brohoolio··on The lucrative business of America’s opioid crisis
It's not all democrats. Rep. Tom Marino, the main force behind the bill limited the DEA's ability to fight against these companies is a republican. Also Trumps nominee to become the next drug czar.

brohoolio··on Louisiana, Sinking Fast, Prepares to Empty Out Its Coastal Plain
I looked at the maps of a couple of the towns mentioned. These are not easy places to protect.

Articles should show the maps.

brohoolio··on Fighting to Replace America’s Water Pipes
Post office has a slightly different mission than fedex. The post office connects the entire country. Which means you’ll have losses in remote places. But the country as a whole benefits from having that infrastructure in place to be able to send a letter to everyone.

In terms of private hospitals you’ve obviously never had to pay a bill from them. They engineer the system to maximize profits, which is different than getting people out the door as efficiently as possible.

Large institutions like the post office / va have problems. I’d argue large companies often have similar problems. But the distinction between what problems these orgs are solving and what private companies are solving is a very important distinction.

brohoolio··on Paradise Papers: New leak from offshore finance firm
Hillary won by 3 million votes. I know it’s a republican / Russian talking point to keep pointing out this division.
brohoolio··on Becoming a Steelworker Liberated Her, Then Her Job Moved to Mexico
One thing I picked up on was that the plan to move production to Mexico was to save 30 million dollars. The CEO's compensation was 40 million
brohoolio··on Russia used Facebook ads to exploit divisions over Black Lives Matter, Muslims
You clearly don't know my in-laws or parents.

By the time the election was over they had bought into pizzagate.

They are the perfect demographic to target. No ad blockers, leaning towards Bernie but kind of didn't relate to Hillary.

You only needed to convince a fraction of the people to either not vote or vote for Trump.

The best part is you could target them by trying all sorts of ads until you found one that clicked then have it go viral.

I'm waiting for the Mueller probe but I fear the worst.

brohoolio··on ESPN Football Analyst Walks Away, Disturbed by Brain Trauma on Field
Actual the enforcers in hockey who fight have some of the worst brain damage. Bob Probert, an enforcer for the Red Wings is an example of this.
