brohee··on Addiction Activists Say They're 'Reducing Harm' Locals Say They're Causing It
Drug policy is perhaps the area where ideology clashes with reality the most. Both too hard and too soft stances are super counter-productive, it takes a very pragmatic approach to achieve a good result. Portugal may be the best example of success, but I'm pretty sure you can find faults to its policy.

Yet most people never suffer it, while I'd assume 100% of the population suffered bouts of vomiting/diarrhea. Looks like the trade-off is alright.

In the IoT world you often still count bytes and milliwatts. Less so when plugged to the grid.

When they get a scholarship out of it, it might actually be... But the organized crime part is obviously the publishing industry.
brohee··on Google Scholar search: "certainly, here is" -chatgpt -llm
It's basically organised crime. It's public money funding scientific publishing, and a huge part of the industry is just here to scam public money.

The industry is ripe for public prosecution when an article submitter didn't read it, an article reviewer didn't read it, neither did the publisher yet it is published in a journal with a subscription price in the thousands payed by publicly funded libraries.

Saudi Arabia had to crank up the execution rate quite a bit to keep opposition in check recently. That only can work so long.

Odd that they don't say which component is the bottleneck. If those are the steel case castings I don't see how industries that are not traditionally arms making can't step in.

brohee··on The Curious Case of MD5
It's not harder to find a collision if you keep the file size the same, if you control both files at least.
brohee··on The Curious Case of MD5
What if both documents have collision artifacts? That's the most realistic attack in e.g. a contract dispute.
brohee··on The Curious Case of MD5
The chance of a random collision is minute but if someone is actually building collisions the system is broken. DVC uses MD5 of file for reduplication for example and when you purposely inject files withe the same MD5 (which take seconds to build) the result is data loss.
brohee··on Colliding Secure Hashes
You can pass review that way. You publish a clean artifact that gets reviewed and vetted, and for the actual attack you replace the vetted artifact by the bad one. If you trust MD5, or as the article shows, even a good 128 bit hash, like truncated SHA-256, you get pwned. That's why you don't accept MD5 based signature as well.

People that take security seriously enough to check hashes should not trust MD5 so the scenario is not super credible, but people still publish MD5 hashed like it's the early 2000s.

brohee··on Colliding Secure Hashes
They often propose verifying downloads with it, and it's pretty easy for a project insider to build two artifacts with the same MD5, one clean and one not...
brohee··on Colliding Secure Hashes
He demonstrates without a doubt that 128 bit of hash is not enough, yet you can still find many projects still publishing MD5 hashes. The long tail of bad crypto is extremely long.
brohee··on EVE Online – Down the Rabbit Hole [video]
I was three years clean (played a good 11 years over a 16 years period) but dipped my toes back recently, and the damn game can still give me the shakes, something that even some pretty hardcore games I play like PUBG or Project Zomboid can't do.

I used to say that I wished I took a milder habit, like heroin.

And people are trafficked to work in meatpacking plants. Should we outlaw meat too? (the people that think yes usually base their reasoning on other grounds)

Human trafficking is an orthogonal issue, but one that is facilitated by prostitution being illegal.

Synfuel for now is super expensive, the one use case that makes sense that I have seen is an aircraft carrier making jet fuel from nuclear fuel.
brohee··on Toyota CEO: "Our ammonia engine is the end of EV's" [video]
If you dismiss hydrogen as fuel made from renewable electricity, and frankly you should on density and safety basis, the two most practical options are methane and ammonia.

Ammonia got an easy electrity to fuel process, easier than methane that starts with hydrogen. Ammonia is kinda nasty but used plenty (for example in cooling) without a terrible safety record. Not sure that safety is a better argument against it than the lack of distribution network.

I think ammonia will find its niche in shipping, but I just can't see it on the road.
