Eve was some of the most intense gaming I've done. It's got tension like no other game, and playing cat and mouse between groups of players trying to kill each other is very rewarding.

I was three years clean (played a good 11 years over a 16 years period) but dipped my toes back recently, and the damn game can still give me the shakes, something that even some pretty hardcore games I play like PUBG or Project Zomboid can't do.

I used to say that I wished I took a milder habit, like heroin.

Ho-ho-ho

You're right. I have a ton of assets there, and I'm afraid of even looking. It's what Second Life wanted to be but could not -- a literally second life.

95% time EvE is a spreadsheet grind while watching Netflix in a separate window, but the remaining 5% are so intense and full on adrenaline rush that keeps you coming back to the game again and again

Is it a rush because you're so worried about losing all of the time/resources you farmed during the slow/down times because if your ship gets destroyed, you lose it all/drop it all/it gets destroyed/picked up by others?

Yep, the cost of mistake is the biggest one. However there is also a pressure to quickly evaluate and make right calls in a very short amount of time when you deal with a threat.

Escape From Tarkov is the same feeling but in an FPS. Never had my pulse race in a game like in EFT during a good fight over some rare loot.

If I had no other obligations I would probably play EVE sixteen hours a day. It's simply not a game I can play casually lmao. In my opinion it's the greatest MMO ever created.

Perhaps a lesser told eve story that the general public hears.

In eve opsec is an understandably important part of the game. Lots of information (was) disseminated on forums and various groups would penetrate them with a spy and leak their information.

However, you can actually burn spies by using coded synonyms to reveal the person who leaked the information.

I'll let you read for yourself. http://failheap-challenge.com/showthread.php?16311-Taking-th...

The canary trap! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canary_trap

Sort of like a barium meal!

Wow, just watched a bit of it; this is great. Will probably take me a week or two to get through it.

EDIT: Does he sound like an AI generated voice to anyone else?

I'm pretty sure it's AI generated. For a couple days I was falling asleep to this one anyway, not much content like it about Eve elsewhere (other than the book that was written).

I have followed Fred for years, that's his voice. Check out the Final Fantasy House video, it's hilarious and disturbing.

Well, I deserve all the downvotes. My apologies to Fred! I love the video.

There are two voice credits with xitter links right in the description.

There’s a series of YouTube comments, theories about a new mic, voice transposing, EQ, and this what all his other videos sound like.

To me, it just sounds staccato pacing, maybe some trimming.

I don’t think it’s AI but I am no authority / audio engineer but I have listened to and spoken with, what I assume, are humans for decades.

Maybe watch the hurdy gurdy video side by side, I believe there's a filmed section of the narrator in there. He's been making these highly detailed videos for a long time and has spent years on this video alone. I highly doubt there's any AI involved.

Edit: not sure when this happened but it appears many videos of his face have been removed from both channels so maybe don't go looking since it seems he doesn't want to be found but rest assured that Fredrik Knudsen is a real person who just sounds like that

Fredrik recently started vtubing under Merryweather Media / Astraline, might have something to do with the removal of pictures?

..and yeah, that is indeed just the way he talks.

I have a theory that many YouTube content creators slow down their voice recordings to stretch out video/watch times... It might explain the strange tones.

Some I play at 2.0x to make them sound normal

There's no way they talk at that pace in real life

for a 6 hour video?

rather, i think when you read a script aloud you tend to talk slower than when having a conversation.

For those who might not know, this video took close to two years to make.

somehow that makes me feel better about the length. i only watched 30 minutes (at 1.5 speed), and so far it has been very informative. if this keeps up i may end up watching all of it, but i'll have to pace my self so it's probably going to take a while.

I assume this would be non YouTube version

Now we need one for Dwarf Fortress.

Here you go! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAhHkJQ3KgY

Not 6 hrs, but I’ll take it!

Dwarf fortress but mmo would be super addictive.
