brohee··on Patterns for Defensive Programming in Rust
The very useful TryFrom trait landed only in 1.34, so hopefully the code using unwrap_or_else() in From impl predates that...

Actually the From trait documentation is now extremely clear about when to implement it (https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/convert/trait.From.html#when-t...)

brohee··on 250MWh 'Sand Battery' to start construction in Finland
V2G can provide the short-term capacity. If one allocates e.g. 40 kWh from their battery to V2G, each million electric cars can add 40GWh of grid tied battery storage. If you pay people fairly, it will happen. There are more than 4 million electric cars in the EU already...

brohee··on Monotype font licencing shake-down

brohee··on Wealthy foreigners 'paid for chance to shoot civilians in Sarajevo'
Limonov was here for ideological reasons. All sides had foreigners in their ranks of various motivations, from the mercenary and the adventurer to the strongly ideologically motivated. What is missing is evidence of people coming there for pure entertainment and paying for the privilege...
brohee··on Wealthy foreigners 'paid for chance to shoot civilians in Sarajevo'
There seem to be clear admission of war crime, that looks like prime indictment material by the ICC, which could make traveling not so cosy in the future.
brohee··on Solarpunk is happening in Africa
That wheel has turned. The king of long distance transmission is now HVDC, to be point of sometimes being used intra-grid and not just for interconnects.
brohee··on Paris had a moving sidewalk in 1900, and a Thomas Edison film captured it (2020)
Not to be grim, but he was the perfect age class to spend 4 years in the trenches...

The French males born in 1894 had a 92% mobilization rate (those who survived infant mortality that was still huge at the time). In 1920, only 48% of this age class was still alive (the big three killer being infant mortality, combat losses and the "Spanish" (Kansas) flu).

See figure 2a in https://shs.cairn.info/revue-population-et-societes-2014-4-p...

brohee··on Paris had a moving sidewalk in 1900, and a Thomas Edison film captured it (2020)
I took it many times, it didn't feel particularly dangerous but you had to pay more attention than on a regular moving walkway. What ultimately killed it was reliability, availability was too low. With more deployed I guess the kinks would have slowly disappeared, but the market just doesn't seem to be there.

It's a small city thing. In Paris and Lyon at least, some establishments have very extended hours or are even 24/7. And you can get a kebab at ungodly hours in even small cities.

The world that the algorithm targets is exactly where is this doable. MCUs typically have a protected OTP area that makes it a good place to inject keys right in the factory.

Hammond didn't protest during a talk but clearly after its end if https://www.reddit.com/r/Defcon/comments/1mlaw4s/jeremy_hamm... is to be believed. And removed by venue guards not DefCon goons.

brohee··on The Chrome VRP Panel has decided to award $250k for this report
Why? If you actually exit the sandbox you'll start leaving traces, and eventually you'll slip and be looked at. That's part of the story EDR vendors sell at least.

You can't deny that you are way more likely to burn the exploit using it on a machine under watch than on a machine that is not...

brohee··on The Chrome VRP Panel has decided to award $250k for this report
An exploit that is used is an exploit that will eventually leave traces that an analyst will look at (if used on a corporate PC)... Either you use it very sparingly on HVT or you end up on the EDR radars and some IOC will be made public eventually.
brohee··on The Chrome VRP Panel has decided to award $250k for this report
Some exploits are sold bag of cash under a table. See e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20651607

Your hookers and blow dealers won't report you to the taxman.

brohee··on The Chrome VRP Panel has decided to award $250k for this report
He had a pretty reliable exploit on the most used browser, pretty sure it he could have gotten more tax free on the black market.

Now, with EDR widely deployed it's likely that the exploit usage ends up being caught sooner than later, but pretty sure some dictatorship intelligence agency would have found all those journalists deep compromise worthwhile...

"All of these findings are no surprise to me. But here’s a surprising finding: not a single woman in the public setting passed, while every woman in the private setting did."

Dunno if the study has enough statistical power but that's an absolutely horrific result. A great talent pool is mostly discarded because of a faulty process...

The ammo thing is for the service rifle. Switzerland also has a very high private ownership level at least compared to the rest of Europe, and by they can keep ammunition at home (but secured, like the weapons).

Whoever came with those policies doesn't seem to get that the harder you make responsible disclosure the more attractive irresponsible disclosure is, and easy enough to do anonymously. The policy stems from a deep culture of CYA and will instead find them pants around the ankles soon enough.
brohee··on Tesla's energy storage business gets sucked into the company's downward spiral
If they do so Tesla is a regular company and should trade at a regular automotive sector P/E ratio, so what, one fifteenth of its current valuation ? That's a hard sell to investors. They are likely better off keeping that plane flying as long as possible hoping for a miracle, then crash, than soft landing, so are Tesla insiders, each quarter passing means more stocks dumped.
