I’m sorry you were downvoted.

I’ve tried to replace Google with both DDG and Bing. Both of their results are frankly terrible compared to Google’s. Google’s transition to its current hybrid Ask-Jeeves-style question/traditional query search engine, along with its inline answers above the result list both blow its competitors out of the water. Google also does a much better job of letting the user know the freshness or up-to-dateness of results with its inline last-modified/updated time stamps.

Both of those things have made it impossible for me to switch off of Google without immediately having problems quickly finding relevant, up-to-date information on the web. I do desperately want to switch, though.

I also especially despise AMP. It constantly breaks websites and itself, especially on iOS.

brodie··on Implementing Rust's dbg! in Python
Maybe you should write a truth table/source code macro!
brodie··on Falsehoods programmers believe about addresses (2013)
The US kind of/sort of has a similar thing with extended zip codes. From what I understand, the postal service usually assigns an extended zip code for each building they deliver to. If you’re at a single family residence, then it’s equivalent to the Singaporean example above (though it’s possible the postal service will still reject a letter addressed to just an extended zip code!).
brodie··on Nearly 12M Square Feet of Vacant Office Space in S.F
I wouldn’t mind living in FiDi if it were in a brand new loft/studio apartment at an affordable price.

All my SF life I’ve tried to stay in the real residential neighborhoods, the ones tourists don’t know exist. Would be nice to change it up without being rent gouged.

The feature’s called alternates. You can use it on-the-fly without modifying any repos by using the GIT_ALTERNATE_OBJECT_DIRECTORIES environment variable.

If you want the effect permanently, there’s the .git/objects/info/alternates file. For HTTP remotes, there’s apparently a .git/objects/info/http-alternates file as well (no idea how that works though). I’m assuming these files allow multiple alternates as the environment variable does.

I kind of had a similar reaction watching Devs after having read that short story many years ago. But now that I’ve re-read the short story, I have to say, it’s pretty weak compared to Devs. I’m not sure this is the right forum to discuss specifics, so I’ll leave it at that.

Though I was very much hoping that Alex Garland’s work on reinterpreting Annihilation would’ve given him the courage to lean into the totally inexplicable in Devs.

brodie··on YouTube-dl is now part of GitHub/dmca.git
This isn’t simply because of how Git works. You can configure Git to look in multiple places for repo objects. For whatever reason, the GitHub devs either didn’t know this, or they didn’t want to implement their forking and pull request systems this way.

As someone else mentioned, this may be an intentional design to make it simpler to implement pulling down remote PRs from the destination repo.

brodie··on Tone-Deafness Test
Just to add to the anecdata, I taught myself guitar by copying what I heard on the radio. I was ten years old at the time.
brodie··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
Propofol is definitely used as one of probably a cocktail of drugs required for various levels of sedation (AKA “general anesthesia” in this case).

I’ve experienced the exact same pain you’re talking about but with IV antibiotics. No nurse or doctor could actually explain why it was happening to me, other than to say the IV had “gone bad.” Because I was in the hospital for so long, they eventually switched me to a PICC line. Absolutely zero pain with that.

My own experiences with propofol involved either the PICC line, or maybe some kind of arterial line or something (I was unconscious when I was first sedated during this incident).

brodie··on Atlassian moving to cloud-only, will stop selling server licenses
Use the Data Center offering?

It wouldn’t surprise me if they eventually offer some kind of “segregated clouds”-type functionality.

brodie··on Atlassian moving to cloud-only, will stop selling server licenses
I don’t know what the products are like today, but you’re right that they’ve historically been two separate products with totally different implementations.
brodie··on Atlassian moving to cloud-only, will stop selling server licenses
It’s surprising to me how many commenters on this post didn’t even read the announcement. When you see that their Data Center offering isn’t going anywhere, it doesn’t seem dire at all.
brodie··on Something Awful, a Cornerstone of Internet Culture, Is Under New Ownership
No. :)

I’ll leave it up to you to guess, but I’d rather not advertise it publicly here.

brodie··on Google postpones Android 11 beta
I don’t understand what statistics have to do with this.

It might be possible that the quarantine and economic hardships are a factor at play, but the ultimate causative factor is that non-white Americans are tired of both the veiled and bald faced racism and mistreatment that is a daily issue.

The protests aren’t just about cops killing black men; they’re about every single aspect of daily life being made more difficult because of constant racism and abuse.

brodie··on Google postpones Android 11 beta
No one is ignoring that. You’re upset with something that isn’t happening.
brodie··on Google postpones Android 11 beta
The people demonstrating aren’t the same as the people looting. Do you truly believe they are?
brodie··on Google postpones Android 11 beta
I didn’t name call.
brodie··on Google postpones Android 11 beta
The issue is that there’s a large population suffering under fear and injustice for over a century now. Maybe you’re just now noticing the pleas for it to stop.
brodie··on Google postpones Android 11 beta
If you really believe this you are truly ignorant beyond all measure of what it’s like to not be white in this country.

It isn’t just police brutality. It’s the constant mistrust, passive aggressive behavior, assumptions that you’re poor, dumb, hooked on drugs, stealing, out and out racism, and that you’re a threat that either needs to be avoided or needs to be handled with threats and 911 calls.

You should educate yourself. This comment is just shameful.

brodie··on Untangling microservices, or balancing complexity in distributed systems
Microservices can be useful in medium/large companies where you have many teams of devs and it becomes cumbersome to have them all work on one monolith. As long as there's good communication and understanding of needs between teams, each team can develop their services how they want, in whatever language/platform, with their own review and QA and deploy processes.

For smaller teams or small projects it isn't really super useful. Also, my personal experience is that when you start making microservices, the monolith doesn't go away. It also isn't so cumbersome if each team is in charge of one or a few services and you only split things if there's a clear benefit.

I'm probably saying things you already know. My point is that I think for multiple cooperating teams, monoliths and microservices are complementary.

brodie··on Apple Faceshield
I wasn't advocating for anything.
brodie··on Apple Faceshield
I don’t think it’s reasonable to stockpile given the huge demand for them by medical professionals.

I also can’t imagine a situation where you can order and wait for a shield but don’t have the time or resources to get a surgical mask or cloth.

And obviously the shield alone isn’t going to protect you from particles. And it might not help slow the spread if you’re infected yourself.

But again I’m speculating. If the health professionals say they need them and the public doesn’t, I’ll defer to them. I’m not an expert in their field and I don’t want to pretend to be or cause anyone to think I am.

brodie··on Apple Faceshield
I think goggles and shields might serve slightly different purposes.
brodie··on Apple Faceshield
If you’re looking at shields with fans you should just wear a mask. Take some anti-itch medication or ointment beforehand.

Based on what medical professionals are saying, regular shields aren’t going to protect you from normal aerosols. Social distancing is probably better for people coughing near you. And buying shields is only going to increase mortality for hospital workers.

Also, mild discomfort is a small price to pay compared to not infecting and killing people around you.

But everyone knows a tap on the head causes instant unconsciousness!
brodie··on Apple Faceshield
Covering your eyes with a clear film is dangerous? Do you regularly suffocate on your glasses or shades?
brodie··on Apple Faceshield
So you like the new one then? I ordered a maxed out MBA and am curious to try it out. I’ve only used the original design.
brodie··on Apple Faceshield
If you got something directed at your eyes, you’ll be inhaling something anyway. Wear glasses or shades and stop depriving hospitals of limited supplies they actually need. You don’t need it. Buying one is tantamount to endangering lives of hospital workers.
brodie··on Apple Faceshield
Plenty of essential public areas are building plastic drapes. That’s effectively the same thing but likely cheaper and not depriving medical professionals of anything.
brodie··on Apple Faceshield
Face shields aren’t protective in this context for the general public. No one is intubating coughing patients or working in messy medical situations unless they’re medical professionals. It isn’t sad that hypochondriacs might not have access to them. It’s reality that infinite instant supplies don’t exist. You aren’t entitled to have whatever you want. Especially when you’d be depriving medical professionals safety and life.
