brockers··on Running Bitcoin uses a small city’s worth of electricity
I'm not sure I understand the issue. I'm betting that the amount of energy used to power online games for Play Station Online is orders of magnitude worse than for bitcoin with arguably less benifit to society. What am I missing?
brockers··on W3C abandons consensus, standardizes DRM, EFF resigns
Oh it most certainly can... it SHOULDN'T but it absolutely can.
brockers··on Platform as a reflection of values [video]
This seems to be the argument that Richard Stallman has been making for years.
brockers··on Why I'm not a React Native developer
Great point! This comment provided more incite that the whole of the article.
brockers··on Coursera raises Series D
The forum support is simply awful. At one point the top 3 feature requests (in the pinned feature request forum) were all the ability to bookmark classes. Not a single response in any of the threads in years... nothing... it is just amazing.
brockers··on Ask HN: Did your life as a parent affected your life as a developer?
If it didn't then you are probably doing one or the other wrong.
brockers··on SHA1 collisions make Git vulnerable to attacks
It cannot. The Google implementation must effectively be done on a blob as the result would not be usable in a structure specific document. What is more, things that require a block chain (like git) are NOT covered with this current attack as both the source and resulting have to be worked on.

Currently the attack vector only works when you can get both documents to "work towards each other" to produce a valid identical SHA1 value.

brockers··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
Your argument is exceedingly well reasoned. I would love to hear a countervailing opinion to compare it to. Can someone please post a thoughtful reply to PKop main point?
brockers··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
Excellent excellent link! Thanks for posting it. Seriously... thank you.
brockers··on There Probably Have Been Aliens
tl;dr The rough estimates of the number of habitable planets in the universe just went from 20 trillion to 100 trillion based on the fact that it looks like almost all stars have planets.
brockers··on Using GPG to Encrypt Your Data
GPG, of course, allows you to use asymmetric crypto and currently supports RSA, RSA-E, RSA-S, ELG-E, and DSA algorithms for that purpose.

But for bulk data encrypting good symmetric (AES, CAST5, etc.) is both more secure and significantly faster.

brockers··on Introducing GitHub Community Guidelines
I am getting concerned about this juvenile concept of peoples emotions being fragile eggs that could be destroyed at any given moment. Why is it the HOSTING services job to decided community guidelines?
brockers··on Millions of Men Are Missing from the Job Market
I don't know. Escapism before the advent of technology generally meant writing letters, reading books, walking, drinking, and visiting friends. All these activities seem to promote mental health and productive behavior compared to digital media. Digital media generally discourages socializing (or at least not real human interaction), discourages sleep, promotes a lack of physical exercise, et al.

Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not trying to argue; just talking out loud about my perceptions as a Software Engineering, Civ5, and CSGo player.

brockers··on Eric Brewer on Why Banks Are BASE Not ACID – Availability Is Revenue (2013)
Every bank that existed before 1960 starting with ancient Greek temple depositories all the way through the first "official" banks of 12th century Venice.
brockers··on Eric Brewer on Why Banks Are BASE Not ACID – Availability Is Revenue (2013)
No the article uses ATMs as an example but the general accounting principals apply regardless. Consider paper checks or IOUs. Humanity literally has thousands of years doing eventual financial consistency while ACID compliance has only existed for the last 50 or so.

I'm not saying ACID isn't good (or that NoSQL is a panacea) but we have long had exceedingly successful financial systems without ACID.

brockers··on I made 6 figures at my Facebook dream job – but couldn't afford the Bay Area
Nobody "deserves" or should "expect" a lifestyle. Life is simply a series of choices. If you choose to have a $40,000 car on 100K income, then you choose to take money from your stocks because you choose a lifestyle over substance.

I make more than 100k, and I have never bought a car for more than $14,000... why? Because I choose my family over my lifestyle.

brockers··on I made 6 figures at my Facebook dream job – but couldn't afford the Bay Area
no kidding... $40,000 is a nice'ish car?
brockers··on I made 6 figures at my Facebook dream job – but couldn't afford the Bay Area
My home is 2-3 years of my annual salary. So is most of my co-workers. Yes, that is probably not true for a teachers salary (although my first home was definitely within 4 years of a teachers salary.)

Are you living in the Bay Area? Is that why medium home prices are so high?

brockers··on The case for making New York and San Francisco much, much bigger
Post hoc ergo propter hoc. The author points to the fallacy himself in the second paragraph when he mentioned that job growth used to be going towards the suburbs when population growth was moving into them.

People create jobs, not places, not governments, not even money... people. Yes, all these things can help (sometimes dramatically) but ultimately all jobs are the product of the creativity and hard work of people.

brockers··on US ready to 'hand over' the internet's naming system
But DNS is the keys to the kingdom. After beginning most of what we now call "the internet" hanging on to one last key doesn't seem like to much to ask. Can someone imagine France giving up the right determine if certain wines are Bordeaux? Or the Swedish Academy of Sciences getting final say on who wins the Nobel Peace prize?
brockers··on When Subpoenas Threaten Climate Science
I assume your comment was intended to prove his point. Attack the person instead of discuss and debate the issue??!?
brockers··on Facebook and Twitter pledge to remove hate speech within 24 hours
What is the difference between Hate Speech and Newspeak? When do we cross over the line from good intentions to thoughtcrime? Is the best way to end racial, religious, or sexual discrimination to hide it or to lambaste those who would propagate it?
brockers··on Former Facebook Workers: We Routinely Suppressed Conservative News
I think it would be foolish to NOT assume facebook AND Gawker do this.
brockers··on A New Map for America
Thank god we have this article from the New York Times to tell the rest of the country how we should be organizing ourselves.
brockers··on Google launches voice typing in Google Docs
The Chrome integration is what is new right? I have been using Google Docs via phone using voice typing for a LONG time now.

In fact, when I wanted to use voice typing at my desk I would just open the phone, open the document on both the phone and Chrome and watch the text appear on screen. Then edit it from the keyboard.

brockers··on Why clean energy is now expanding even when fossil fuels are cheap
That was the general wisdom back in the late 70's but the reality now is we have found WAY WAY more carbon based fuel sources than we ever thought could be captured. Updated global estimates for oil are somewhere between 50 and 250 years and most estimates (other than those by left leaning not for profits) estimate 100 to 180 years worth of coal.
brockers··on Why clean energy is now expanding even when fossil fuels are cheap
This is true, but subsidies for for renewable sources is significantly higher on a cost/kw amount (the number consumers care about.) What is more, renewable are not taxed ANYWHERE NEAR the same rate as fossil fuels which in the United States can be crazy high. For example, in California over half the cost of a gallon of gas is State and Federal Taxes.

And then, even with the lower taxes and larger subsidies, many places have to put price controls on the sale price of renewable energy like setting the production price on residential solar to the retail price instead of the wholesale price.

brockers··on SolarCity Will Eliminate Over 550 Job Due to State’s Anti-Rooftop Solar Decision
Under this same logic the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) would have lead to the impeachment of the President and most of the Democrats in Congress. It was HUGELY unpopular and has only recently become so-so... 5 YEARS after it was passed.
brockers··on The Rise and Fall of For-Profit Schools
Neither is teacher salary. You are spot on in your factor rankings and it make me absolutely crazy every time people try to turn student failure into a teacher pay issue.
brockers··on The Rise and Fall of For-Profit Schools
Nationally speaking money spent per student is at an all-time high ($11,749 according to figures from Figures in the Statistical Abstract of the United States.) Yet we are getting worse and worse results. Private schools, on average, spend significantly less per student ($7,171 according to the same source) but achieve significantly better results.

Some school districts spend almost $25,000 per student which is drastically larger than all but a handful of the most expensive private K-12 schools in the world.

Money is simply not the problem and every single statistical number I have seen shows it.
