broast··on Artist refuses prize after his AI image wins at top photo contest
The person who generated the image seems to have decades of award winning experience in actual photography, so I wonder if that trained eye passes your test?
broast··on Valve Restricts Accounts of 2500 Users Who Marked a Negative Game Review Useful
> but as we've seen with Stadia, it's just not quite there yet.

.... if you are using Stadia as an example of the capabilities of this technology, it is a mistake. Stadia was always the least capable of all the game streaming services.

As someone who games exclusively on the cloud, including competitive online multi-player games, using services like ShadowPC, GeForce Now, and XCloud - I contend it is quite closer than you think

broast··on Why is ‘juice jacking’ suddenly back in the news?
It's a little confusing about airports specifically. Usually official airport usb stations are built into the furniture. They would have to take the thing apart to insert a device? I don't see an example in this article of an inconspicuous device for these types of ports
broast··on Spotify abandons Heardle less than a year after buying it
The app ux is buggy and I'm one to complain on spotifys forums about it, but I do wonder about the sentiments in this thread, as I still find having access to spotifys library or capabilities with podcasts, music, playlists, making playlists, downloads, etc, to be a delight and I have not found myself seeking other applications to replace it as it gets so much daily use from me. Am I in the dark about something?
broast··on Show HN: Debate Devil – AI debating practice app
This type of product might be better served by using a completion API in the format of a debate, rather than chat api, to avoid the filters. Unfortunately, OAI made that too costly for most.
broast··on Show HN: Debate Devil – AI debating practice app
Ah, so like a presidential debate
broast··on Teaching Large Language Models to Self-Debug
I think it's more natural than you might think. For example, my company laid off a lot of people to try to be profitable, and now they pay me more but I have a smaller team with tighter deadlines. I have no choice but to use gpt for a lot of my analysis, design, and code- which I've gotten pretty used to over the past year in my hobby time

The way I see it, if you code without it, you won't compete with the speed and value.

And they are not going to back fill those roles

broast··on Maximizing the Potential of LLMs: A Guide to Prompt Engineering
I know I can't be the only one that finds text completion much more useful and powerful than an agent that wants to chat with me.
broast··on Why ChatGPT and Bing Chat are so good at making things up
It's like dealing with electricity (or maybe the internet). Early skeptics believe it is a curiosity with little application. People see how it can jump all over the place and create disasters that they can't imagine having engineered systems to finely control its behavior and create reliable complex functions and become the bedrock for computing.
broast··on Over 40% of the latest YC batch are AI/ML startups
Or these ai wrapper companies will get a head start on building the software technology to use LLM's while others work on getting these types of models (from open source or competing offerings) to run directly on our phones
broast··on Entrepreneurs who regret starting businesses
This is still more than other more privaleged people have to sacrifice per attempt
broast··on Introducing Agents in Haystack: Make LLMs resolve complex tasks
Perhaps these papers are also just coincidence. This field is so new and this type of reasoned completion chaining seems like it was an inevitability. I imagine many other active gpt products that got started early hand rolled similar systems.
broast··on What if ChatGPT was trained on decades of financial news and data?
Renaissance Technologies Medallion Fund is more akin to AI. The fund only actively manages 10 billion dollars, but with huge annual returns.
broast··on What if ChatGPT was trained on decades of financial news and data?
If LLM's have hidden models like people say they do, a hedge fund might be able to replicate the success that RenTech has had with their hidden Markov models. I mean, they recruited NLP engineers to achieve the greatest level of success Wallstreet has seen.
broast··on $335,000 Pay for ‘AI Whisperer’ Jobs Appears in Red-Hot Market
To be fair, just because someone thinks a job is horrible doesn't mean they would quit.
broast··on Superhuman: What can AI do in 30 minutes?
Some people have made a career out of being good at reading, debugging, and fixing complex incoherent code that was written by other people. I imagine those will thrive in the near future.
broast··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Lex Fridman Podcast [video]
Personally I like him because he is amateurish. I think you'll find that people can relate to amateur level discussions because most people are amateurs.
broast··on ChatGPT and Wolfram Is Insane
Personally I find completions as equally useful as the chat interface and I'm waiting for OpenAI to prioritize economizing and adding plug-ins for gpt3/4 for completions like they have for chat and gpt-3.5-turbo. Being able to rely on Wolfram for accurate completions (through the API) rather than just through chat/chat api would be very cool
broast··on Yes, you should still learn to code
Learn to read code that you didn't write
broast··on Docker is deleting Open Source organisations - what you need to know
I think this thread was started by the manager that has to hear that push back, hence the headaches.
broast··on Docker is deleting Open Source organisations - what you need to know
What if you already have important planned and unplanned urgent work occupying all your SRE'S for the month? On a team or org that's already running thin? Surely you've been there.
broast··on What is Temperature in NLP?
Solipsism implies there is only the self. However, it is possible that we all have similar enough brains that have evolved for us to share a false reality together, like Donald Hoffman's recent theories. On that note I do often wonder about the sentience of stars, photons, everything in between. So chatgpt is not much of a stretch and is exciting in that context.
broast··on Long-Term Cannabis Use, Cognitive Decline, and the Hippocampus
I use cannabis daily, and I also follow all the studies suggesting cognitive decline, alzheimers, and heart issues, etc. However, having not started till I was in my mid 20's, I do find that maybe I benefited from that cognitive decline with decreased anxiety, more physical energy, and more success in life. But now that I'm in a better place, I do intend to stop for a decade or two though, for the sake of my longevity.
broast··on Ask HN: Science fiction movies that are appropriate for 12 year olds?
They showed is Gattaca in school around that age, for some reason.
broast··on The philosophical and spiritual views of Barbara McClintock
I'm a fan of the thousand brain theory of consciousness. Something like our consciousness is the experience of a democratic voting process involving all the cells in our body.
broast··on John Boyer, blind software engineer, has died
I have a blind colleague at work. I interviewed him and recall he was using a screen reader in the IDE while solving our coding problem. I thought that was amazing to witness. He's a great engineer.
broast··on Don't believe ChatGPT – we do not offer a "phone lookup" service
Markov chains are great for modeling human language and human decision making. ChatGPT demonstrates this and the results are not trivial. I don't see it being glorified beyond what it plainly does
broast··on “Chat GPT went down and 25% of my team could not work.”
It is pretty simple to summarize the constraints of your codebase and ask for a conceptual solution, I find this much more useful than generating code.

Similarly, I've saved hours or days on bug investigations by describing the bug and letting gpt guess why I couldn't reproduce it, and it was right.

I can certainly believe a significant productivity drop.

broast··on Software 2.0 (2017)
It's the hardest part but also the most fun.
broast··on The Hollywood sign debuted 100 years ago
Ignoring that the film industry in India is popularly called Bollywood, in honor of Hollywood.
