britmob··on Romain Grosjean walked away from F1’s scariest crash in decades
I believe the cars are intended to split in half to dissipate some energy in the event of a crash.
britmob··on Brave Browser Passes 20M Monthly Active Users and 7M Daily Active Users
As an Opera user since before the Cheomium switch, it’s honestly a piece of shit now. I constantly find myself annoyed by popups or features that just do not make sense. I really do need to switch to firefox, I just don’t want to lose my add obs..
britmob··on Youtube-dlc – Download videos from YouTube or other video platforms
Nice to see youtube-dlc being reinstated.

BTW, this fork was indeed active for a few months before the whole RIAA situation.

britmob··on Cloudflare and the Wayback Machine, joining forces for a more reliable Web
Wow, this is awesome to see. I hope this doesn’t put a lot of load on the IA, though..
britmob··on Why I link to Wayback Machine instead of original web content
“CDN-Whether-You-Want-It-Or-Not”
britmob··on Ask HN: What is your favorite method of sending large files?
Resilio Sync (formerly bittorent sync) is my go-to for any file larger than a few hundred megabytes.
britmob··on Facebook account now required to login to Oculus devices
The entire SteamVR ecosystem or WMR.
britmob··on Amazon Renames Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming
Twitch has a LOT of issues with their culture and moderation
britmob··on Microsoft to continue discussions on potential TikTok purchase in the US
I wouldn’t say Minecraft has been ruined. Sure, it’s not been taken in a direction a lot wanted, but it’s more popular than ever now..
britmob··on Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US operations
Mixer, most likely.
britmob··on My thoughts in response to the lawsuit against the Internet Archive
Those are user-uploaded, so the appopriate copyright holder can DMCA them.
britmob··on Tempering Expectations for GPT-3 and OpenAI’s API
You only need a large amount of system RAM for the initial dataset encoding. You can do this once per dataset on a high memory config on AWS for pennies.
britmob··on Cloudflare was down
Looks like it's back. No longer getting issues with 1.1.1.1 and domains are being resolved!
britmob··on Cloudflare was down
East Coast USA here. Any cloudflare site is unreachable, and 1.1.1.1 is giving me massive latency and packet loss :)
britmob··on Half-Life 3 and Left 4 Dead 3 were both scrapped because Source 2 was unfinished
I can’t speak for many technicalities between existing engines and Source 2, but from the bit I’ve been playing in Alyx, it seems to be more optimized than any other engine I’ve ever seen, especially with VR. It’s multithreaded across 3-5 cores, and runs better than a lot of games that look worse. I have no doubt that Source 2 offers performance (especially in VR) that existing engines cannot easily match.
britmob··on Valve secrets spill over in new Steam documentary app
He has been getting better recently. But he absolutely still needs to realize how much weight his words have.
britmob··on Show HN: A Python tool for text-based AI training and generation using GPT-2
Have I been using gpt-2-simple wrong..? I’ve been fine-tuning 355M on a 8GB 1080 for months..
britmob··on Show HN: A Python tool for text-based AI training and generation using GPT-2
Great work, been loving gpt-2-simple recently!
britmob··on 92 of top 500 subreddits controlled by same 5 people
For anyone that does not browse T_D:

It was a common occurrence to see things like pictures of muslim women wearing headwear and a title of “It’s a diaper for their shit brains!”. There is casual racism, hatred towards minorities, and to top it all off, participants seemed to believe that there was nothing wrong with any of this, like you see above.

britmob··on Thank you for helping us increase our bandwidth
There is http://iabak.archiveteam.org, but it’s not exactly large.
britmob··on Travis Scott Virtual Concert on Fortnite Breaks Record with 12M Attendees
A very similar event was done in 2019 with Lindsey Stirling and WaveVR, so the tech is certainly there.

britmob··on Valve and HackerOne: how not to handle vulnerability reports
The vulnerability is that there was no public key encryption, hence allowing a MiTM to redirect the steam app to their own site.
britmob··on AI for generative design: Plain text to 3D Designs
Can’t wait till this becomes applicable to something like AIDungeon!
britmob··on Cloud Storage for $2 per TB per month
They’re on GitLab now.
britmob··on Cloud Storage for $2 per TB per month
It cannot. I assume there’s an HBA thrown in the mix somewhere they did not mention.
britmob··on Cloud Storage for $2 per TB per month
Great writeup from David as always. Can’t wait to see more!

If anyone hasn’t seen the work being done on the skynet platform, I highly recommend taking a look. Amazing stuff.

britmob··on FreeNAS and TrueNAS Are Unifying
Because it just works. If you want more advanced features and are fine with tinkering, unraid likely isn’t for you.
britmob··on IOTA being shut off is the latest chapter in an absurdist history
You lost $71? That’s unfortunate. Should’ve bought more than $172 of IOTA.
britmob··on Cloudflare silently deleted my DNS records
That is... quite scary. Why would you EVER have a way for auto deletion of domains?
britmob··on Servers for an Accelerated Future
I wonder when these issues will be far behind us... I can’t imagine it’s very near.
