briliantbrandon··on Your job is to deliver code you have proven to work
It's roughly 1/10 that are causing issues. Not a huge deal but dealing with them inevitably takes up a couple hours a week. We also have a codebase that is shared with some other teams and our primary offenders are on one of those separate teams.

I think this is largely an issue that can be solved culturally within a team, we just unfortunately only have so much input on how other teams work. It doesn't help either when their manager doesn't seem to care about the feedback... Corporate politics are fun.

I'm seeing a little bit of this. However, I will add that the primary culprits are engineers that were submitting low quality PRs before they had access to LLMs, they can just submit them faster now.
briliantbrandon··on The new literalism plaguing today’s movies
> The act of sitting yourself in the cinema with other people to actively engage with a movie transforms the experience.

I very much agree with this sentiment, unfortunately post-COVID that transformation has often been a negative one in my personal experience. This is entirely anecdotal, but I feel like there is an increase in the frequency with which I have had a public movie experience ruined by people on cell phones, talking to each other, or even yelling in response to the events on screen.

I feel like when a movie comes out now that I want to see, I am in a constant tension between dealing with a potentially rowdy or obnoxious public, or a less ideal viewing experience at home.

briliantbrandon··on Dostoevsky’s Favorite Murder
I want to second the Notes From Underground recommendation. I took a class focused on Dostoevsky as an elective in college and the professor had us start with reading Notes From Underground. It did a fantastic job of setting the tone and expectations for the course. One of the few things I read in college that I actually have held onto my copy of.
briliantbrandon··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
Yeah I wanted to point this out. In Texas it is the top 10% for every public university except the University of Texas at Austin which varies the percentage from year to year depending on the expected number of applicants. 6% is the lowest I have seen it. I believe it was 8% the year I was accepted.
briliantbrandon··on Why we've never fallen in love with virtual reality
Are you referring to Half-Life Alyx? It's going to support quite a large range of VR headsets, not just the Index.

briliantbrandon··on How Discord Went Mainstream
I'm a subreddit mod for a decent sized esports subreddit and we have an "official" discord for our sub. Our rational for this is it provides a good medium for real time reactions to games/matches that can be shorter and more like twitch chat without having to be actual twitch chat. We noticed too that once we created the discord there was an overall quality increase in the actual posts/comments on the subreddit because most of the less thorough stuff got posted to discord instead.

It also provides a good outlet for people looking to find others to game or hangout with that share at least a few similar interests.
