this is really, really cool.
brickmort··on Ozempic Slows Kidney Disease, Novo Nordisk Study Finds
The headline is a bit misleading because it doesn't state that Ozempic is a product made by Novo Nordisk. When you take that into consideration, this article becomes less about a study and more of a pharmaceutical company making promotional material for their own product.
brickmort··on How the Y chromosome makes some cancers more deadly for men
In the months leading up to the Russia's october revolution in 1917, citizens learned that it was much easier to just wear the badge of support for the revolution than be publicly harassed and ostracized by supporters. This passivity is what ultimately allowed the bolsheviks to gain power to in Russia's government and helped kick off events that plunged the country into decades of famine and misery. while the context and scenario here is different, 'eating the shame' is a very slippery slope.
brickmort··on Ask HN: Best cars without too much digitalization?
For a reliable pickup truck in the US, Nissan Frontiers have been very trustworthy. Up until this past year, they were known for having a very "old" looking dashboard because the interior had not been updated since the early 2010s. Despite that, it continues to be one of Nissan's most popular vehicles and some would consider it to be the best in their lineup.
brickmort··on Discipline by King Crimson
I love the latest live version of this song. Great drum work at the start of the song and the verses are more sung instead of spoken. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpZxwe4SXY8
brickmort··on Discipline by King Crimson
This band is truly amazing and they just keep getting better. Their recent live albums from 2017-2018 are some of their best releases. I think HN would really appreciate the technical talent of this band.

Here's Danny Carey (Drummer from Tool) talking about this album and how the title track influenced his style. https://youtu.be/SsxSm1xCR-E?t=175 You can definitely hear how that song influenced Tool's signature sound years later.

brickmort··on Alpha-Gal Syndrome
It sounds like a joke, but this exact thing was discussed at the world science festival as a way to get people to stop eating red meat. https://twitter.com/spinte8/status/1407258675358715907
brickmort··on El Salvador makes Bitcoin legal tender
Not a dupe. The earlier thread from 3 days ago is about the announcement that a bill would be proposed to make bitcoin legal tender. This thread is from the news from several hours ago that the bill officially passed into law by Salvadoran Congress.
brickmort··on Hyundai Nexo sets new world record 887.5 km travelled on single tank of hydrogen
887.5km = ~551.46 miles
brickmort··on Learn Go in five minutes
should have opted for the four minute courses ;)
brickmort··on YouTube launches TikTok competitor, Shorts
They have been experimenting with this for a few days now. A slightly different, possibly less branded version of this had already been on the Youtube app. I found myself sucked into it last week. I clicked on what looked like a funny short video and, before I knew it, I was 10+ videos onto the rabbithole. Whatever algorithm they are using, I think they really nailed it.
brickmort··on Thomas Sowell interview
I've read six Thomas Sowell books in the past few years. His book Basic Economics is a classic, but my favorite of his is Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage One. It covers the things that the former does but, as the title suggests, applies it to a real-life scenario. He then walks through the scenario as it plays out to demonstrate his point to the reader. For example, when a city artificially lowers the rent, it makes apartments more affordable, but what happens afterwards? he would then play the scenario out as it affects tenants, landlords, and the rental market. I highly recommend it!

brickmort··on YouTube has deleted the account of David Icke
In the USA, if travel restrictions hadn't been put in place in late January (going directly against WHO recommendations at the time), the virus would have propagated much quicker into the country and the US would have been in way worse shape today than it is now.
brickmort··on How yellow fever rebranded a Brooklyn village
What a strange and eerie coincidence... over a hundred years after yellow fever ravages 'Yellow Hook', One of the most concentrated areas infected with Coronavirus today is the neighborhood of Corona, Queens.
brickmort··on An Ode to Driving in America
Here in my car, I feel safest of all. I can lock all my doors It's the only way to live In cars!
brickmort··on Ask HN: Book Recommendations on Western Civilizations
If you want to check out a great "Audio Course" (essentially reads like a long audiobook) on this topic, I recommend 'Foundations of Western Civilization II' by Robert Bucholz. No need to read the first part. Its a great outline of the culture, politics, and turning points that led to where the western world is today.
brickmort··on Ask HN: Products that suck but you still use?
Bluetooth.
brickmort··on Ask HN: Products that suck but you still use?
What's not to like about Amazon Music? I use it for streaming music and have been pretty happy with it.

brickmort··on The US chip industry starts to wake up to new competitive reality
the boot times on these new MBPs are crazy. If you look away for just a moment, you can miss the restart entirely and you'll be left wondering if it restarted or not.

brickmort··on Ask HN: 2018 Summer Reading List?
This sounds great, I'm gonna give this one a shot. Thanks for recommending!
brickmort··on Are Flat-Earthers Being Serious?
I actually appreciate the skepticism of flat-earthers. Everything should be challenged. What I have noticed about the flat earth theory, however, is that the arguments are very weak.
brickmort··on Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?
This is how I feel about this book (12 Rules for Life). I was actually just thinking about his 'Tell The Truth' chapter just last night. It's such a simple concept, but if you find yourself lying, even to yourself, you find that ultimately it snowballs into a worse problem in the future. Even if this is all I got out of the book (which it isn't) it's absolutely worth the read.
