brianmckenzie··on Ask HN: Need some tax advice...
It's good that you were able to pay 20k along with your extension.

I can't think of any specific online resources that would help (note that I mistakenly said Quickbooks Online instead of Turbotax Online in my original post - I run Quickbooks, but do taxes in Turbotax or by hand).

Maybe you could find a better CPA, if you really feel you have to have one. Do you know your actual tax liability from your return? If not, you could go on the Turbotax website and figure it out without paying anything, unless you actually file through them. Do you know all your deductions, etc? Since you live in NYC your rent could be a big deduction, if ever work from home.

If I were you I would go through Turbotax Online and diff that against what your CPA is telling you, as a first step.

brianmckenzie··on Ask HN: Need some tax advice...
Yeah, fire him.

I don't know all the details of your situation, but an expensive CPA should not screw up like that. Unless he can get you enough money back to justify the cost of retaining him, you're better off without a CPA.

brianmckenzie··on Ask HN: Need some tax advice...
First of all, fire your CPA. Sounds like that will help you pay off the debt faster. If you can't find a better/cheaper CPA in NYC, Turbotax online has a special version for contractors, which is what I use.

Next year, make estimated quarterly payments to the IRS, Just take 30-40% of what you make each quarter and send it to them, their website explains how to do it. Then at the end of the year you will either get a refund, or the amount you owe will be small enough that you can easily pay.

EDIT: I use Turbotax online, not Quickbooks online.

brianmckenzie··on Three.js: Javascript 3D engine
Fails for me in Firefox, runs great in Chrome.

All the same, this is awesome. Thnx!

brianmckenzie··on 104 year old video of San Francisco
I realize that it's film, just didn't know that anyone had gotten to that point with it so early. Thanks for the link, BTW!
brianmckenzie··on 104 year old video of San Francisco
Did it strike anyone else that in all likelihood, every single person in the video is dead now, even the kids? I didn't even know they had video in 1906...
brianmckenzie··on The centuries-old struggle to play in tune
Sorry, that was an oversight on my part.
brianmckenzie··on A real person, a lot like you
I simply don't understand why anyone would send an unprovoked, nasty email to someone else. People on the internet have been pissing me off for nearly two decades now, and I don't recall ever doing this.

But like clockwork, someone does it to me every few months.

brianmckenzie··on Congratulations Patrick
Way to go, Patrick! Not just because you have the same last name as me, but also because I love reading your posts here and your blog. Best of luck!
brianmckenzie··on 74% of Twitter users have 10 tweets or less
The main reason I signed up for Twitter was to grab my name before anyone else could, in case Twitter really takes off and becomes crucial for day-to-day life. For personal branding, in other words.

I would guess that I've sent less than 5 tweets since I've been on there. That hasn't kept a bunch of people from following me, although I don't know 90% of my followers and the other 10% are mostly ex-girlfriends and people I knew in high school.

brianmckenzie··on Japan: It's Not Funny Anymore
I'm not sure who's funnier - the author or the people he's criticizing. It's like a mobius strip of confusion.
brianmckenzie··on Ask HN: What artists do you like?
I like Gerhard Richter, and well-done graffiti. Also some of the stuff coming out of the Leipzig school, Mattias Weischer et al.
brianmckenzie··on Ask HN: Do you recommend Open Office?
I've used it extensively when compatibility with a bunch of MS Office users was not a concern. Never had any trouble opening other peoples' MS Office files, but I wouldn't trust it if I had to send lots of files to people.

For home use it's superb - even my computer-illiterate parents are using it exclusively.

brianmckenzie··on Startup School 2009
Same here. I'm showing up anyway.
brianmckenzie··on How Much of Your Memory Is True?
I imagine anyone who works in law enforcement is also well aware of the fallibility of memory, they just don't bring it up in the court room.

Nope, they leave that to the lawyers.

brianmckenzie··on On those "Entitled" Twenty-Somethings
Everything your parents told you was a lie. Well, not really - raising children is fundamentally different than raising adults.

Only adults can raise themselves.

Do the drugs. Have underage sex. Steal a car. Get into a fistfight.

After this, you will realize that life is not prescriptive/deterministic.

brianmckenzie··on RIP Michael Jackson
Well, now we know just how famous you have to be for the HN admins not to kill a TMZ link reporting your death.
brianmckenzie··on Abandoned Places In The World
We're talking about different phenomena. < Oxygen = < Fire, but > dirt & minerals = < perception of underground fire.
brianmckenzie··on Abandoned Places In The World
I'm not trying to minimize what happened in Centralia. It does seem completely crazy.

Dirt can absorb a LOT of heat. If you had to put out a fire, and you didn't have any water, you'd throw some dirt on it, right? We are all standing on a big ball of fire, anyway.

Having worked next door to the Sears Tower for several years, I can tell you that's a lot of dirt, distributed over the entire area of the fires. The only thing that surprises me is that it took so long for the effects to be recognized.

By comparison the carcinogens in Times Beach were on the surface and therefore easily measurable.

brianmckenzie··on Abandoned Places In The World
I'd bet that there are quite a few places like this in the US. Check out Times Beach, MO: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_beach
brianmckenzie··on Here's how to get tethering on any iPhone right now, no jailbreak, for free
I wouldn't surprised if visual voicemail alone has saved me enough time to justify the cost.
brianmckenzie··on Poll: Do you smoke?
I work from home and use a standing desk exclusively - hasn't helped me (permanently) quit smoking...although it has made me smoke quite a bit less.
brianmckenzie··on Poll: Do you smoke?
I smoke on and off - tend to quit for awhile then start again. Back when I was doing full-time office-style programming gigs, I found it a good excuse to go outside and walk around if I was stuck on some particular problem, and it always worked wonders in that regard.

That being said, It's a nasty/expensive habit and I don't recommend it to anyone. Anecdotal evidence: of the 600 or so people at the last startup school, I saw maybe 4 people light up, so it can't be very prevalent among good hackers.

brianmckenzie··on What's the best way to stay in a conversation on Hacker News once you've commented?
Yeah, the threads link is also good in case someone comments on something that has already scrolled from the front page.
brianmckenzie··on Voxli (YC W09) Targets Gamers With Browser-Based Group Voice Chat

brianmckenzie··on Mindfuck Movies
The reasons you hate Donnie Darko are why it's good.
brianmckenzie··on Why CSS should not be used for layout
Yes and No.

It isn't just propaganda anymore. Pure CSS is what you're going to see in almost every code base you might work on. The last several gigs I've had wouldn't even allow tables for tabular data, which I think is ridiculous.

If I were reviewing your code, I'd give you points for using tables to deal with tabular data. I might not even hold it against you if you used it in a layout, depending on context. Unfortunately the person reviewing your markup will probably expect pure CSS, even if it is data displayed in a table format. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

brianmckenzie··on Ask HN: How do you get new freelance jobs/contracts?
There are some really good comment here already, but my $.02:

My main gig these days was a client at an agency I used to work for. I was the obvious choice for them because I built their software in the first place.

Otherwise, I've gotten contracts through friends, craigslist, and various mailing lists.

Don't underestimate the value of tech-related mailing lists. In the past, when I've been looking really hard, I've been able to get several leads/interviews for contract jobs per week, just from mailing lists.

Also, help other hackers find jobs/contracts. It will come back to you.

brianmckenzie··on Ask YC: Cars?
I drive an 08 Volkswagen GTI, and I've been thrilled with it. It's a nearly perfect blend of performance, style, practicality, efficiency, etc. Has been a Car & Driver 10Best for the past few years. They got all the little things right on this car, and I've never had anything so fun on a daily basis. Also very inexpensive compared to many cars people are mentioning here.
brianmckenzie··on How (not) to get a job at a startup...
You might be surprised how hard is to find a true CSS expert. He may be exaggerating its difficulty compared to other languages though.
