The only reason to be impressed is that this person had the inspiration to think up the use case that got you excited until you realized it was vibe-coded.

I'm not a fan of vibe-coding but I see where it can solve those little issues around the edges of our lives that a fully self built "project" doesn't justify.

I can NEVER find a pen though. On the rare occasion I have a pen handy, not a scrap of unneeded paper to be found. Maybe I really do have ADHD....
brewdad··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Companies will try to make up lost sales by serving American "whales", especially in a luxury good like wine. I would expect prices to rise here in the short term and then the market will decide whether that means those of us outside the 1% stretch our budgets to keep buying or turn to the cheaper options.

Kind of like the Super Bowl and other major sporting events. Normies can make that their "major trip" for the year but mostly they want to sell their multi-thousand dollar tickets to folks who will be at the next big thing the following month.

brewdad··on I switched to Brave
In 2026, no politics usually means "we don't want you digging too deep into ours". Ask Ed Sheeran how well "no politics" works out.

Do you have any proof they don't?

Apple was taking orders today. Maybe not in your region.
brewdad··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
You’re right, Apple is calling it Burgundy. Previous leaks were calling it something or other cherry but it looks to be the same color.
brewdad··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
It works with normies.

My wife just preordered an 18 pro. She’s the family photographer and is still on a 128gb iPhone 12, so it’s time for an upgrade and she fell in love with the cherry color.

She bought the 12 instead of the more appropriate 12 pro years ago because she loved the purple that she couldn’t get with a 12 pro.

Edit:typo

Agreed. The photo backup is so seamless. I’ve been documenting my electronics and other possessions for insurance purposes and in anticipation of a move. It’s been so easy to go around the house taking photos of serial numbers and such with the better camera on my phone. Then I grab my iPad and update the spreadsheet. Nothing needed to happen on my end, the photos are just there for my iPad to access and as later proof if I ever need it.

It should be treated that way but we’re talking about elected prosecutors who are itching for an excuse to put people in prison rather than looking “soft on crime” by allowing people to live under house arrest.

That’s what a good executive costs these days. You could try to hire a CEO for $100,000/yr with the expected quality of applicants.

I carry my entire music library on my phone in Opus format. Smaller than a similar quality MP3 and good enough for the times I’m likely listening offline (working out, riding transit, on a plane).

brewdad··on Tracking Costco gas prices
I shop Costco because I don’t want to have to chase sales all over town. I did that in my 20s when money was tight but now I value my time more than saving fifty cents on chicken.

A few decades ago is a millennium in college admissions for top schools. I went to a top 20 university. My kid, who was a way better hs student than I was and state ranked in music with a ISEF engineering award couldn’t get into any of his top 10 schools. Got waitlisted as a dual legacy from my university and ultimately settled for a top 35 school.

It was during COVID, when testing didn’t happen and schools had to rely on gut feel and high school reputation, so that may have played a role too.

He’s started his career now and wondering what to do with all his free time after eight years of living on six hours of sleep or less.

They also try to portray themselves as a small family farm. They provide as much as 1/3 of the prepackaged and commercially used lettuce in the United States. It’s far more than Taco Bell. If you’ve eaten at any restaurant that offers entrees for under $20 there’s a good chance you’ve eaten their produce.

Obviously, not every lettuce leaf or jalapeno is contaminated but this has the potential to be huge if our government systems don’t push back.

brewdad··on 2027 memory capacity is reportedly sold out
My signature on a touchpad is noticeably different from my paper signature. It’s been a real challenge for me recently as I’ve had to sign a number of paper documents while the “official” signature on file for me is an electronic one from a touch interface. A few times I have had to resubmit fresh copies when the first ones were rejected.

Cars get developed on a cycle that spans a decade in many cases. Four or five years is pretty much the minimum. It could impact development cycles going forward but it will take a good while for that to be reflected in the marketplace.

In the shorter term, you’ll probably see more “base” models on offer with some of the most intensive features disabled. There’s still going to be all of the telemetry stuff that makes them money through third parties though.

The advantage of watching live sports over the air rather than streaming is that there is no delay and the broadcast is as high quality as it can get rather than getting compressed by your streaming app.

brewdad··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
I almost always run with my phone. One of the few times I didn’t, I was on about a 12 mile out and back run. At mile 6 my IT band seized up in a way it never had and never has since. I could barely walk, much less run and I was six miles from home. Eventually, I managed to hobble about a mile over the course of an hour and find a business with a phone I could use to call for a ride.

Having a phone that day would have been really nice.

brewdad··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
Yes but then invariably I will forget to turn them back on the next time I use it. Additionally, sometimes that 45 mph option is still coded as a highway in Google’s data, so you get a really obtuse route.

I’ve been spending a lot of time in Mexico City. I had to abandon Google Maps there. The transit system has an excellent metro, a solid BRT setup, some electric tram buses that are fine and then the purple buses that run irregular routes, don’t always accept the transit card that the rest of the system uses, and are by far the most unsafe option, such that even locals won’t ride them unless they have no choice.

Google will always route me on the purple buses. Even when the metro is faster. Their directions in Mexico City make zero sense.
