brewdad··on I accidentally made law enforcement shut down their fake honeypot
They were supposed to shut down after #12 but they got busy, then had to take that day off to get the kids to the doctor and it fell to the wayside. Eventually, the notification for #15 arrived and the dev panicked that it should have gone down weeks ago.
brewdad··on Maryland becomes first state to ban surveillance pricing in grocery stores
The store we usually shop puts out weekly loyalty coupons via email. Sometimes it's a free pint of ice cream. Other times it might be $5 off $20 of spend, etc. To my knowledge they aren't targeting these specials to specific groups because the cashiers always mention them before we even see them appear. It's possible their screen is giving them additional info that isn't mirrored to the screen we see though.

In my experience, it's usually posted on the back of the door.

That sounds like a "fantastic" shopping experience. No thanks.
brewdad··on Maryland becomes first state to ban surveillance pricing in grocery stores
There has been a lot of consolidation in the industry over the past decade. There are three major grocery "brands" in my city. All of them have the same parent company. Quitting one store to go to another is about as effective as the people who boycotted Bud Light by switching to Modelo.
brewdad··on Maryland becomes first state to ban surveillance pricing in grocery stores
In my town of 100,000 people there are four options. A universally high priced grocery, a dirt cheap, goods at our near their sell by date with the expected low quality grocery, a gas station convenience store, or a bunch of mid-tier grocers with a few different names all owned by the same parent company.

Many places would dream of my "options".

Much cleaner than keeping a finger on you to bypass the print reader.
brewdad··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
If this happened at Chicago, it would be front page news. Boston and NY aren’t WR eligible. Since it happened in London, place it behind soccer in the priority list.
brewdad··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
Elite marathon runners aim for a one minute negative split (Second half faster than the first). These guys pretty much nailed it.
brewdad··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
Oh it is. At a typical large high school making the team puts you in the top 1% or better of athletic ability compared to the population at large.

At my peak, I finished the NYC Marathon in the top 2%. I still finished 45 minutes behind the winner.

It feels like elite athletes aren’t even competing in the same sport.

brewdad··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
Was the barefoot movement ever about running faster? I always thought they sold injury prevention by strengthening tissues that running shoes tend to over support.

Much like the road bikes that cost as much as a sedan, unless you are competing on a world stage, these aren’t meant for you.

I’m sure someone will happily sell them to you if you enjoy wasting money.

brewdad··on The Joy of Folding Bikes
Admittedly, I’ve never ridden a 16” wheeled bike. My 20” is rough enough that I’ve never bothered considering the smaller wheeled models. Maybe if I bike/train commuted every day rather than a few times a month.
brewdad··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
I think OP meant the phone was going to be replaced in three years tops, so no one cared much about battery longevity. Nowadays, the battery can be the constraint for practical phone life, since few consumers can replace one themselves and by the time they pay someone else to do it, may as well trade it in and let Verizon subsidize a new one.

Having an easily swappable battery returns some power to the user.

brewdad··on Deezer says 44% of songs uploaded to its platform daily are AI-generated
>> That being said, the world is increasingly crowded with "good enough" music.

As I enter my mid-50s this is how I feel about the music I listen to. I have decades and decades of music I love for a variety of reasons. I don’t have time for “discovery” anymore. If I get introduced to a new band by someone I know or algorithmically, that’s great but I’m not going to spend hours trying to find the next great thing when I have so much I enjoy already.

brewdad··on Show HN: Faceoff – A terminal UI for following NHL games
That’s not bad. One of my favorite times is college football season with a big game on say, ABC. You quickly learn who it watching OTA, who is watching on cable and who has YoutubeTV based on the different reaction times after a big play.
brewdad··on Artemis II safely splashes down
What a sad view of the universe. To hold that humanity in the year 2026 is the best the universe can do.
brewdad··on Desk for people who work at home with a cat
Elastic hair ties have always been a favorite of my cats. My wife has to hide them unless she wants to be gifted with the "kill" at 3am.
brewdad··on US and TotalEnergies reach 'nearly $1B' deal to end offshore wind projects
This deal has zero to do with someone like you. This impacts our electrical grid. Now instead of harvesting renewable wind energy we will be burning LNG to power that portion of the grid.

I suppose there are still some diesel generators out there, so they might burn that instead. Of course, that only makes you worse off.

brewdad··on Two pilots dead after plane and ground vehicle collide at LaGuardia
You can't know how big of a problem it is without an investigation. Frequently, the initial "obvious" cause of a collision or incursion turns out to be a multi-layered set of failures. Tightening up procedures or recognizing a previously overlooked defect in the systems makes us all safer and should be prioritized.

We talk about Vision Zero for streets. Vision Zero is actually achievable in aviation.

brewdad··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
I’m not sure that Google/Android selling everyone two phones instead of one is the deterrent to this behavior that you envision.
brewdad··on The MacBook Neo
The target customer for this wants a laptop that will live in a dedicated space and rarely/never travel, except to the couch. 15 inches is perfect for that.

I put Linux on an old Surface tablet. Works better than Windows on the same device. The only thing that isn't working under Linux is the camera. Built in extra privacy as a bonus!

brewdad··on Florida judge rules red light camera tickets are unconstitutional
Which is why they are supposed to have a sworn officer review the camera footage. I have certainly had a camera flash me while waiting to turn right on red, still outside the intersection. They never sent me a ticket however since I had clearly not done anything illegal.
brewdad··on Florida judge rules red light camera tickets are unconstitutional
Many US states have switched to that approach. The ticket goes to the registered owner of the vehicle and no penalty points are attached. It's treated more like a parking citation than a traditional moving violation.
