brett40324··on April 22, 1993: Mosaic Browser Lights Up Web with Color, Creativity
I came across this reference in a book this morning and the April 22 date caught my eye. This article by wired.com was published in 2010. 2010 (already 14 years ago) feels like a big turning point in web technologies as well.In 31 years, look where we are. I was 10 in 93' and discovered a new world through Mosaic, and then Netscape. I was lucky enough to have a family computer, a modem, dial up, and had spent hours and hours on BBS's prior. The rest is history. The web made me. The web made us. Tim Berners Lee, thank you.
brett40324··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
I was laid off about a month ago. Last week I purchased the domain covid-story.com (theres nothing deployed yet).

I want a a basic crud application that allows users to log events in their life by date, journal, or more blog in longer form the day to day experiences they've had during the pandemic.

brett40324··on Cookie Warning Shenanigans Have Got to Stop
Is this necessarily a bad thing, or just a reality of operating a business?
brett40324··on Cookie Warning Shenanigans Have Got to Stop
This may be so for 'some' US based websites or companies, but those of us with users worldwide tend to find it very essential to not violate the right and privacy of our users, in accordance with their countries' laws.
brett40324··on Ask HN: Been self-employed for 18 years, am I hirable?
Im sure you would do great in a full stack web application engineer role, or lead, or other lead engineer role. I have to ask though, have you ever worked on a team of developers, especially with one or many other teams with engineers who have the same amount or more experience? If not, then that is an area that may render some opportunities to be more out of reach, unfortunately.

You're going to get inquiries about agile, test driven development, release cycles, code reviews, build pipelines, and overall dev team processes that you're familiar with.

Like other comments here, focus your value as a senior dev, maybe even on certain stack or framework.

Good luck to you sir!

brett40324··on Unable to Post Bail? You Will Pay for That for Many Years
2% of a bond is laughable. A lot of bonds for misdemeanors are 500 or 1000 usd. So someone could bail out for 5 or 10 bucks! A more serious crime with a 10,000 bond, at 2%, one could get out for 200. I have never ever heard of anyone getting a text from a bail bondsman. If you dont show, you break your bond agreement, and get arrested on a warrant for failure to appear!
brett40324··on A listing of companies that don't do whiteboard job interviews
Thanks for posting! Your process sounds really great at getting to know and feel how a candidate thinks and works with people.

Is the ping pong approach, tdd, and time involved communicated to candidates before the interview date?

Why change the title and current tense in the post here? Dang

brett40324··on Oldest Viable Laptop (2017)
> synth software I use a 2008 MBP 17" because I have legacy versions of music production software that costs a lot, that I can no longer upgrade. It runs great, but it has an occasional memory buffer overload when trying to record and playback too many tracks at once.
brett40324··on California Considering Lanes with No Speed Limit
Not to be snarky, but the person to ask first about it's construction is Adolph Hitler, unfortunately. "Hitler's autobahn construction began in September 1933 under the direction of chief engineer Fritz Todt. The 14-mile expressway between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, which opened on May 19, 1935, was the first section completed under Hitler. By December 1941, when wartime needs brought construction to a halt, Germany had completed 2,400 miles (3,860 km), with another 1,550 miles (2,500 km) under construction."

brett40324··on Una Corda, a piano with one string per note
Do you have a link / reference about this you can post?
brett40324··on Ask HN: Why do software engineers always focus on salary and early retirement?
Because you don't regularly see published hype from the ones NOT in the camp of get rich, retire. You're own perception based on 'software engineers' and 'always' is wrong, and is based on the last 10 years tech startup culture mirage. Everyone wants to be a rockstar, then producer, then record label owner, but not everyone wants to play in the band everyday just cause they love it.
brett40324··on Porting 30K lines of code from Flow to TypeScript
Webstorm by itself is $129.00 yr for commercial use. Im replying to myself to make this more specific edit to my above comment in response to dude below that found it worthwhile to find me on twitter to tell me I'm wrong there as well in a Tweet because $129.00 != hundreds, geez! Dang, ban this user again!

brett40324··on Porting 30K lines of code from Flow to TypeScript
FWIW, It's much more per user for commercial / corporate use. Like, minimum hundreds a year: https://www.jetbrains.com/store/#edition=commercial
brett40324··on Porting 30K lines of code from Flow to TypeScript
Unless I'm mistaken, one major difference is that Webstorm costs money.
brett40324··on Porting 30K lines of code from Flow to TypeScript
> In TS, you'd have to type every function signature to get the same level of confidence.

I don't disagree, but isn't this the point? That by typing every function you can reliably have confidence in parameter types and return value types, and if your program is able to throw a type error on build, then it should and alert the developer that they're not logically correct in their implementation.

brett40324··on Porting 30K lines of code from Flow to TypeScript
It's maybe worth noting here that compiling to C and transpiling to JS are two entirely different paradigms of linking and building a software release.
brett40324··on Ask HN: Engineers from non-CS background, how did you pivot into ML/AI?
Off topic, but wanted to reply regarding "The first page of my resume is my 10 years of non-career programming experience."

This must be part or most of the problem. Cut your resume down to 1 page, if possible. Include a meaningful cover letter catered to the opportunity and specific company youre applying to. Shove the last ten years stuff into the very end, and start that first page with your software knowledge and related projects. Ping me someday here if this ends up getting your foot in the door.

brett40324··on How the Valley treats experienced people
Wow, do you have a link to the blog post? Bjarne, if you read his C++ books, is a great technical communicator and author, and his contribution to computer science speaks for itself.
brett40324··on Elixir: A Mini-Documentary 2018
This is a good video. Im the target market as someone not up on programming language hype, lately. I tried Elixir in 2015ish and enjoyed using it. Now, 4 years later I am definitely motivated to build something in 2019 in Elixir.

brett40324··on I need to copy 2000+ DVDs in 3 days. What are my options?
Im wondering how the already preserved and publicly available film content is being considered being made freed ? Theres very clear information on rights, reproduction restrictions, and the preservation efforts that have already been made here: https://www.archives.gov/research/order/film-sound-video-dc....
brett40324··on Show HN: Cached Hacker News for when you don't have access to the internet
I made a simple page once that loaded about 30 different craigslist iframes of for-sale categories of many regional cities. I never considered performance, but it just worked, and was a huge time saver in terms of the listings I wanted to browse! This was 2010ish, so today I'm not sure how browsers handle this considering CORS.

Edit: to note that I loaded this locally as file://...index.html and you can't publish something like this as an aggregated list due to CLs policies for such use of their content.

brett40324··on ‘12 Monkeys’: Why Terry Gilliam’s Movie Is Relevant Today
I definitely agree. I turned 18 in September just before 9/11. So, there's a very definite mental line in time drawn that year where everything since has vastly changed.

Yep, this. It's branding 101. Rolex is not in the wristwatch business! They sell luxury, period.
brett40324··on Show HN: Nirvana, a WIP programming language
Don't be sorry. I didn't mean to be discouraging, if that's the case. You did say a WIP, but often people like to see and evaluate that, especially for implementations of languages. A slightly more informative title would get you more feedback - along the lines of WIP spec, or Nirvana - new language project idea. Good luck on Nirvana, post again soon!
brett40324··on Show HN: Nirvana, a WIP programming language
Ok, it's a show HN. But there is literally only a license and readme. I don't get why you would even post this. What language is the interpreter or VM? being implemented in?
