brentonator··on A New Bytecode Format for JavaScriptCore
It's first-party but I've found the benchmark results frequently posted in their blog do indeed transform into real-world results. https://v8.dev/blog
brentonator··on Lack of leadership in open source results in source-available licenses
What a lot of people overlook is when Amazon takes something (DocumentDB with MongoDB compatibility) on internally is they are re-inventing the way the database works in such a way it's dubious if the community would benefit. I do think it would have been better to see this go the Postgres route where they could have continued to contribute to the core product but I believe MongoDB saw competition against their MongoDB Cloud product and decided to change the licensing. This neccessitated the need for a hard fork since they were not interested in working together. An AWS Q&A stated they are working on a completely independent code base that is API compatible with MongoDB 3.6, so there is nothing to contribute back to the MongoDB open-source code base.

DocumentDB much like Amazon Aurora has pivoted much of the database internals to depend on the AWS ecosystem. The whole concept of replica-sets on MongoDB are very rigid and inflexible compared to the elegance made possible by EBS and Amazon engineers.

MongoDB replication is measured in seconds meanwhile DocumentDB replication is "usually less than 100 milliseconds". This makes read replicas in DocumentDB more relevant for all kinds of real-time tasks vs MongoDB.

brentonator··on 82% of vehicles sold this year came with a touch screen
For better or for worse. A lot of those things should not be on the road.
brentonator··on Ask HN: How do you control your diet while working at a tech company?
If I feel full after a meal, I know I've made a mistake. Cutting most carbs (not Keto) is a great way to feel more full. Slow down when eating and completely avoid sugary drinks.

I weaned myself off of Coke by switching to Coke Zero then to water/tea/coffee with a sprinkle of a packet of sugar for taste.

Don't mindlessly eat at your desk. It's unsanitary and has been proven to cause people to eat more than they would consciously.

When you skip a meal, don't cave to your body's urge to eat double next meal. You will just send it straight to fat. Remember when you skip meals, then carefully portion the next meal to avoid the set back.

A good low carb, medium-low fat, high protein shake with lots of vitamins is a great way to skip a meal, maintain muscle mass, and avoid the insulin/cortisol cycle that drives fat storage. These shakes should be enough to discourage you from partaking in the temptation around you.

If the shakes aren't enough try celery, carrots, fresh fruit (not dried more on that later), and other low carb foods.

Never keep dried fruit around, it's too calorie dense for our own good. Would you eat 24 apricots? No? Then why are you eating 24 dried apricots?

I still don't bring lunch but I avoid pizza, taco bell, burgers, etc. Small bento box with lots of salad and no fried stuff. BBQ without any biscuits/bread. Rotisserie chicken with steamed vegetables. Protein shakes.

brentonator··on LTE Fuzz
Came here to drop that link, the summary today is much better.
brentonator··on New LTE vulnerabilities discovered by KAIST [pdf]
Sorry for the terrible title. 36 new vulnerabilities were discovered, most of them denial of service it appears.
brentonator··on Bitcoin ETF research finds that 95% of Bitcoin volume is fake
If I have taken anything away from 2018, it's that people generally do not form their own conclusions. We need gatekeepers more than ever today because fraudulent data and information is so easily created.

When 95% of volume was studied to be fake, even if they were 50% off in their estimate there is an absolute need for Coin Market Cap to be a gate keeper.

brentonator··on USB4 Specification Announced: Adopting Thunderbolt 3 Protocol for 40 Gbps USB
Stop thinking about it and go with your gut feeling. EMFs are clearly the only reason you would feel better camping. /s
brentonator··on USB4 Specification Announced: Adopting Thunderbolt 3 Protocol for 40 Gbps USB
What kind of BS phone is that? Pixels support USB-PD which is something I'd say should be mandatory if you have a USB-C port. I can charge other phones, charge from other phones, charge my Nintendo Switch, charge from my PC, etc.

That they gave you the USB-A to USB-C cable as your go-to cable is a red flag that they are peddling the connector as a marketing bullet point.

brentonator··on YouTube bans comments on all videos of children
God forbid they put a link to Wikipedia under flat earth videos, huh?
brentonator··on Show HN: Spase.io – A new kind of planner
I think this would be better implemented by making a linear calendar. In either case, the UX of navigating through time is bad.
brentonator··on FCC threatens carriers with 'regulatory intervention' over robocalls
T-Mobile is already signing their Caller IDs. T-Mobile to T-Mobile can show if a Caller ID is verified today on certain phones.
brentonator··on Ask HN: How did you decide what problems to solve in your lifetime?
I started with only one goal, and I have come to only two conclusions.

Goal: Learn how to do even that which I can't properly understand at face value today.

Conclusions: I do not want to work in hardware. I do not want to work in life-dependent hardware.

Hardware is hard, and I want the freedom to experiment with new software ideas without having to consider who may die / be injured. You can usually undo mission critical faults with money but you can't replace a life.

Unfortunately, I don't know how I came to these conclusions other than meeting with lots of people. I get a bad taste in my mouth when I see people who go off to location X in the world to help solve Y. I just don't see myself committing to that location and would prefer to attack things in a way that can solve them worldwide.

brentonator··on Ask HN: Why not more hiring of junior devs, then on-the-job-training?
I don't think seniority has to do with a number of years of experience but the quality of that experience. You could sit at a company for 8 years and not advance your capability, experience, and worthiness.
brentonator··on Ask HN: I’m a non-tech founder, would you recommend me working with freelancers?
I wouldn't call GC's non-technical. They know all of the pieces that it takes to get the thing built and the community of construction workers have multiple general skill-sets. The best part about your GC might be that he knows how to hire the right people.
brentonator··on MongoDB switches up its open source license
This VP specifically states MongoDB "IS NOT OPEN SOURCE" presumably referencing their own organization's definition of open source. What's worse is their current definition technically qualifies MongoDB as open source. She conflates a non-OSI-approved license with the definition of open source very blatantly.

As someone just above said open source for many simply means the source code is open (can be viewed).

Edit: Realizing now that "open source" may be a genericized trademark held by one of their board and we may need to ignore their assertions in this thread.

brentonator··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
Why are we putting all of this storage into phones? Are you looking to keep all of your photos on your phone so when you break it/get it stolen you lose all your photos?

It just doesn't make sense. I download more movies than I can watch more music than I can listen to for flights, more apps than I use, take more videos and photos than I will ever use. The google photos app auto-deletes my old backed up videos/photos as needed unlike on Apple devices where you have to delete the folder yourself. I never run out at 64GB.

brentonator··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
Missing some T-Mobile LTE Bands. (edit, the linked website had the incorrect lte band information)

No IP68 so I have to worry about spills and rain again.

MicroSD and 3.5mm holes to fill with dust/water.

It looks good, but not quite what I want.

brentonator··on Public.resource.org wins appeal on right to publish the law [pdf]
I'm not even particularly affected by the issue in general. When I was reading my state law and found it referenced standards you can't publicly access, I was unreasonably peeved. I wrote letters to my representatives and congressmen about it but didn't expect much.

I felt endorphins reading this today because this is the first time I've heard of the government not fucking something up in months. It's a Dumb and Dumber "So you're saying there's a chance" kind of satisfying moment.

I'm hopeful Disney & friends finally get the middle finger in 2023 on copyright extension.

brentonator··on Public.resource.org wins appeal on right to publish the law [pdf]
When I saw they won this case (I didn't know the case was in action), I donated what I could. I donate to the EFF and they support him with legal counsel.

I've been a vocal opponent of the law not including the standards they reference due to copyright. Once it's enacted into law you should lose all right to prevent dissemination of those standards. It's not like the government is ever knocking on your door as a standards designer to enact your private standard as law.

I think a large part of why housing in Florida is expensive is because of the prohibitively expensive standards you need to purchase to even determine what you have to do to legally build a home.

brentonator··on Public.resource.org wins appeal on right to publish the law [pdf]
The law is the law though. If you can afford to lobby to have your standard become law, then you should have made your business plan more robust than charging people to know the law.

I don't really care that the standards organizations lose money from big corporations when thousands of small businesses gain free legal access to the laws governing their industry.

brentonator··on FBI Releases Study of Pre-Attack Behaviors of Active Shooters – FBI
I wasn't kidding, and yes I mistakenly said pie chart instead of venn diagram. Unfortunately, they are incredibly misrepresenting the percentages.
brentonator··on FBI Releases Study of Pre-Attack Behaviors of Active Shooters – FBI
Did anyone catch the horrid pie chart "Figure 10"?

https://imgur.com/xmUrTbg

Think about it, someone's job was to produce this report and they took clip art of a pie chart and wrote text over it.

Good enough for government work I guess.

brentonator··on The latest trend for tech interviews: Days of unpaid homework
We had someone come in and spend 45 minutes on interview problems e.g. produce an array of 100 to 1. You had free access to Google and were encouraged to use them for reference.

After each attempt we said no that's not right, and then at the end we were asked if we were going to use his code in our platform and if he should be paid.

Felt kinda bad for him, clearly didn't pass the interview test.
