brentm··on The Economics of Christmas Trees
You'll never beat the real thing without the smell but if you spend decent money you can buy a convincing looking fake.
brentm··on .gay Generic Top Level Domain(gTLD.) is now open for public
The company that runs it also does other domains like .art, .blog, .design, .group, .ink, .llc, .photography, .style and .wiki.

I'd say they just picked the most generic thing that they thought would make the most money.

brentm··on Companies that help people vanish
That seems excessively prohibitive to personal growth.
brentm··on React is becoming a black box
Hooks do draw you in the direction of a wholesale replacement just because of their incompatibility with classes. I wouldn't consider that to be a bad thing but it does take some time to adjust to the change at first.
brentm··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
I wonder if this is hack in the sense that the account passwords were compromised or that the system itself was compromised in a way that would allow the attacker to tweet from any account.
brentm··on Ask HN: How bad should the code be in a startup?
Does anyone have any best practices for onboarding new engineers to a situation like described?
brentm··on Patio11's Law: The software economy is bigger than you think
I do recall Basecamp from day one allowed you to export your data which not many other people did. What you do with that and how you get it into something else is another story but also not really their problem.
brentm··on Small business rescue earned banks $10B in fees
Not a popular opinion but considering the effort involved, should they not have earned fees? Should they have donated their time and resources? I'm sure it took a monumental effort to pull it together with the lack of clarity being handed down and the volume of loans to process in a short period of time. If the government wanted to do for $0 fees they would have figured out how to do it themselves. If a private business has to do it then they should be paid. If we are complaining about this what about 3M and everyone else making tons of money off of PPE? Obviously it isn't very palatable to hear about others making money off of this kind of thing but we need incentives for people to step up and help.
brentm··on Amazon begins temperature checks and will provide surgical masks at warehouses
They really should have been doing temperature checks a month ago. Amazon is pretty critical infrastructure right now. Many people would be up a creek if Amazon had to shut down.
brentm··on Companies fret as costs soar for software subscriptions (2019)
"Most"? I don't know about that. Maybe some do but I'd say most are the same software companies used to buy once every three years or some new thing companies need to do (like live chat). I don't think most saas is keeping down headcount, that's giving it way too much credit.
brentm··on Finding the real first post on Instagram
Dark! And isn't there a Netflix show about that concept?
brentm··on Finding the real first post on Instagram
I heard they were also working on a teleportation prototype at the time Instagram took off.
brentm··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2020)
Merchbro | Stamford, CT | Full time + benefits | Open to remote

We help people Express What Matters through custom printed products. We've bootstrapped the company from nothing to a couple thousand customer orders per month. We're small (9) and it is time for our first engineering hire outside of the founding team. We're looking for a generalist who will help us improve our entire platform as we move from being a single product focused company to one focused on a variety of items. If you're interested in a challenge, building things from 0 and being a key contributor to the entire process, get in touch. Our current stack is Rails / Postgres / React with some legacy stuff mixed in. We run on top of Heroku.

brentm··on Prime Leverage: How Amazon Wields Power in the Technology World
Using "copy" as the description of what Amazon did in the opening paragraph sets the tone of what they are trying to do here. Open Source is not even mentioned until most people have stopped reading.

brentm··on Adam Neumann will determine WeWork's fate
A majority of that 700M was a line of credit tied to his shares of the company. Good chance he will face a margin call on that (since the shares are now worth a lot less) and either have to come up with the cash (maybe why he wants this 200M to leave) or pledge more shares to make up the difference in value.
brentm··on Adam Neumann will determine WeWork's fate
We Work leases the vast majority of their space so SoftBank isn't buying up a bunch of real estate.
brentm··on Adam Neumann will determine WeWork's fate
They are so far in the whole on this company it wouldn't be wise to let it die. I doubt they want someone else in charge of what they funded.

After they clean the company up it will be a good business. It's just not a tech company and never was a tech company but there is still good money in leasing office space for $1, making it look nice and then subleasing it for $4 or $5, they just need to knock off the bull shit.

brentm··on Adam Neumann will determine WeWork's fate
For Neumann this whole thing must be such a nightmare. On one hand you did it. You built a huge company and become super rich at the end. But on the other hand the IPO blew up, the company is losing billions, employee options are fucked, "everyone" thinks you're an idiot, etc. If it was me this would ruin it all, especially since he has been living the rich guy lifestyle for many years now. I hope he didn't do anything more shady than we know though because the next saga to this story could easily be securities fraud, indictments, investor lawsuits, etc, etc. This amount of capital doesn't usually blow up quietly.
brentm··on Documentation – Your Secret Weapon
This is a space that could use a good SAAS product. Like a Rap Genius for software with documentation tied to specific Git versions and tied into flow charts, etc. You could add a VSCode extensions on top to easily add new documentation & see when documentation exists. Open source projects use it for free and private companies essentially pay for it forever. Maybe something exists?
brentm··on AT&T employees were bribed to install phone unlocking malware on company network
Federal prosecutors love a good dramatic press conference.
brentm··on Boeing 737 Max Grounding Could Stretch into 2020
Unless they were just acting completely reckless, which is hard to believe considering their previous safety record and the downside of failure, it's probably more complex than that.
brentm··on Why I Don't Think Craig Wright is Satoshi
He has, to me, always seemed like Satoshi hiding in plain sight.
brentm··on FAA Finds New Risk on 737 Max, Orders Boeing to Make Changes
I think overall we should consider this process a very positive thing, FAA and Boeing (and Airbus as well) are all going to learn a lot from this process which will make air travel safer in the future. It's unfortunate that it took two tragedies to get us here but if you look at the history of aviation improvements this isn't the first and it won't be the last time.
brentm··on The Collapsing Crime Rates of the ’90s Might Have Been Driven by Cellphones
I have for a long time believe that the entertainment value provided by the internet and connected devices should not be overlooked when considering factors that contributed to this decline in crime during this period. Just having something to entertain people can help keep them out of trouble.
brentm··on Advertising as a source of dissatisfaction: cross-national evidence
Though without advertising don't we have less jobs and seamingly greater dissatisfaction with lack of income?
brentm··on Lyft’s revenues double, losses quintuple and prospects darken
Nasdaq site has information every 15 days or so: https://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/lyft/short-interest
brentm··on Lyft’s revenues double, losses quintuple and prospects darken
Of course, they might be totally off base and completely wrong and the company might go to $10 or $0. But when compared to the media who live and die by the dramatic story that garners the most interest and the markets which are amplified by many factors I personally prefer the opinion of those who at least spent time modeling it out. I also personally think transportation is a necessity and Lyft has levers it can pull which can make a big impact in their bottom line.
brentm··on Lyft’s revenues double, losses quintuple and prospects darken
Most analysts are positive on company, media and market not so much. I think I'd bet on the analysts being right.

I think eventually for Lyft & Uber prices will creep up, discounts & marketing decrease and plenty of money will be made on a small spread.

brentm··on Lyft’s revenues double, losses quintuple and prospects darken
Contributing in a big way to the short interest (according to Bloomberg[0]) is a single trade meant to hedge Soros $550m position purchased off of Ichan just before the IPO.
