brentm··on DJI Mini 4 Pro
I always look at these and think I want one but also can't think of what i'd actually use it for. I just picture it sitting in a closet next to my GoPro and Oculus after about 3 days of messing around.

Anyone own one? What do you use it for?

brentm··on Show HN: Whiz – A copilot for your terminal
I'd consider using something besides 'list all files' as first example in the gif. I'd think anyone who opens a terminal knows how to do that so listing files in a directory and hitting a spinner isn't very inspiring.

The second curl example is better since plenty of people won't know that off the top of their head.

brentm··on The elite's war on remote work has nothing to do with productivity
Bad take. There are plenty of dumb reasons people are wanted back at the office but the most predominant one is probably that it just "feels like" it will make your company better.

I'd think people would be happy that at least some remote work will never go away at this point. To argue that you should never ever even have to consider going back into an office for any amount of time is just silly. But to also argue you can never ever work from home is also silly.

brentm··on Universal and transferable adversarial attacks on aligned language models
I don't think it's puritan content most people are worried about, it's more about ensuring ChatGPT, etc is not providing leverage to someone who is looking to kill a lot of people, etc.
brentm··on Databricks Strikes $1.3B Deal for Generative AI Startup MosaicML
I heard Ali the CEO of Databricks speaking on a podcast recently and stated their revenue last year was north of 1B.
brentm··on The Stupid Programmer Manifesto
Being smart enough to create click bait content is probably more valuable anyway.
brentm··on Vasectomies rose after the end of Roe
People are ridiculous.
brentm··on TikTok is now banned in Montana
The article I read in WSJ last night said otherwise. It said that the lawmaker who introduced the bill wanted to modify it to include that language but it was too late in the process to do so. The lawmaker believed having the language would have made it more easier to avoid legal scrutiny.
brentm··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
It was done as part of the Tax & Jobs Cuts Act of 2017. It was probably partly done to help offset some of the taxes that were being cut.
brentm··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
Couldn't you say that about the salary of any employee working on a long term project?

I think the problem is having essentially a tax on software development could discourage some investment in that area especially from the smaller companies that could benefit the most.

brentm··on Vim-like “jump” cursor for Mac OS Window Management
Just tried this one, works great on M1 Max. No delays.
brentm··on Tesla removes parking sensors, the results are predictably terrible
The voice recognition is bottom of the barrel. It makes Siri seem incredible. I've more or less given up on being able to reply to a text or make a call by voice command.
brentm··on Starbucks CEO will work a shift at the company’s cafes once a month
Historically I think they all did around the Christmas rush but probably not so much any more.
brentm··on Cause of Fatal 2021 Tesla Wreck Was “Excessive Speed” and “Alcohol Intoxication”
It probably was the later. It seems probable he was attempting to exit using the backdoor because he was unable to operate the front due to it's loss of function. Horrifying situation to visualize if that is indeed what happened.
brentm··on Ask HN: How are you handling Section 174 changes for bootstrapped companies?
You could be right. I was relying on some the other less formal language like:

> companies engaged in research and development (R&D) activities should be implementing this significant change

I think it might require backing up into tax code Sec 174 "Amortization of research and experimental expenditures"[0] itself though. There it says:

> (3)Software development - For purposes of this section, any amount paid or incurred in connection with the development of any software shall be treated as a research or experimental expenditure.

Keying in on "For purposes of this section" I think we'd need to figure out is software development expense always required to be treated under this section, or is this just talking about software development expenses that are made in connection with R&D expenses which are under this section. It's hard to imagine all and any software development expenses are R&D. E.g. if you're running a software service company and have 10 engineers building something for a client, maybe it's R&D for the client but it's in not at all R&D for the service provider....right? I am not a lawyer or tax accountant so I may be way off base here.

brentm··on Ask HN: How are you handling Section 174 changes for bootstrapped companies?
According to Journal Of Accountancy[0] this seems to only apply to software expenses that are also treated as R&D expenses. So if you expense the costs and don't claim R&D credit you lose the credit but would also not have the cash flow issue being described. It's still a net negative but at least less negative for current year cash flow.

brentm··on Coinbase’s chief product officer will leave with a $105M payday
Good question. My gut says his all in comp for Google including stock would likely be a lot higher but who knows.
brentm··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
I don't believe that is public information but they always could be cash flow positive if they needed to be that's for sure.
brentm··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
The trend of companies taking huge late stage rounds was always going to blow up the public tech IPO market. Many companies get too used to free money and operating with little inspection. By the time they feel like they "have to go public" the growth rate has peaked and they haven't learned to operate with any level of financial scrutiny. Result is private market investors do great and all too frequently public markets bomb in 6-12 months or sooner.
brentm··on Meta Earning Results Q3 2022 [pdf]
That isn't really something a publicly traded company can do without putting even more pressure on it's share price. Mark's also still very young, if he wanted to ride off into the sunset he could have done that a long time ago. I give him a lot of credit for staying in the drivers seat given the political pressure they've been under since 2016 and now this period. It would have been a lot easier for him to just checkout and hang out on a mega yacht all day.
brentm··on Blink-182 tickets are so expensive because Ticketmaster is a monopoly
A typical artist deal with a promoter would include an 85% (artist) / 15% split of profit after a pre-negotiated split point which covers the costs of producing & marketing a show for the promoter. I've never seen a full LiveNation tour agreement and perhaps they could have bought out Blink for each show with a different style deal but I'd be surprised if that still didn't include some upside for dynamic pricing otherwise why would the artist ever agree to do it? Everyone knows $600 tickets aren't exactly popular but this is a business and if that's what they're going for a secondaries anyway it's better for the artist to collect the cash in my opinion.
brentm··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast $50K expands to hundreds of homes
This seems like a fun project to work on but what is the financial game here? Does he invest in building the network, operate at a loss and then sell to someone like Comcast? I assume building a remote fiber network that can reach 600 houses has to incur huge CapEx (way more than $2.6M right?) and at $50/mo a very long payback period.

However it works, pretty awesome project, kudos.

brentm··on Build your own web framework
Very accurate. There was a time that I enjoyed this stuff but now it just takes too much effort to filter.
brentm··on Peter Thiel-Backed Crypto Lender Vauld Suspends Withdrawals
Bearish in terms of the price of the assets at the time/medium term, not necessarily on the technology in the long term.
brentm··on Peter Thiel-Backed Crypto Lender Vauld Suspends Withdrawals
I've been in and out of crypto since 2014 or so but I've never been more bearish than 2021. When the majority of my Twitter feed became visionaries predicting web3 it all seemed destined for pain.

There are billions of reasons to embrace the idea of a platform shift but when everyone can see it coming a mile away they're probably either wrong or a deep trough of sorrow away from it working out.

brentm··on Lost USB with 460k city residents’ personal data found
> The company explained that the employee had drinks after work and later fell asleep on the street, but when he woke up he realized that he had lost the bag containing the USB.

I respect the honesty but wow, I can't believe any company would spell it out that literally.

brentm··on CNN cutting back on over-hyping everything as “breaking news”
I agree that they could use improvement but compared to MSNBC and Fox they're still probably the nearest to the center out there.
brentm··on Twitter Deal Temporarily on Hold
Without this deal TWTR could easily be $15-$20 right now.
brentm··on Twitter Deal Temporarily on Hold
This + the bro cult around him on Twitter certainly make him hard to stomach sometimes. But still, when I see he is on a podcast or some other media it is usually worth the listen.
brentm··on We need a middle class for startups
Couldn't agree more on this, my company is there now. One difficult problem to solve is hiring. This is due to a number of things but one big one is a lack of external validation. When you raise from a known VC you're gaining a stamp of approval similar to having attended a top tier school. When you're selling product and investing profits into hiring that's cool but it's harder to assess from a potential employee perspective.
