brentm··on ‘No Other Land’ consultant Awdah Hathaleen killed by Israeli settler
The problem here though is what will ever give Israel confidence that Oct 7 will never happen again? We know that going after terrorists for years and killing them just creates more terrorists (Iraq, Afghanistan). The young children who do not end up dying of starvation will be men in 20 years, still in Gaza with no options to leave and resent Israel who they will consider to be effectively their jailer. The situation is just untenable. I don't like to think that the result of Oct 7 is a more open Gaza but I don't really know what other options Israel has.

Hamas obviously started this but Israel won the war a long time ago. The world deserves an end. The longer it goes on the more Hamas will actually have achieved some kind of lasting positive image of Gaza which is rooted in their actions on Oct 7th and that would be an incredibly bad outcome for all.

brentm··on Ukrainian hackers destroyed the IT infrastructure of Russian drone manufacturer
Of course but also Ukraine doesn't have the privilege to care about the long term right now. You can't lose the battle today to win the war that you may never live to fight.
brentm··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
Well Google did also just pay $2.5B to license Windsurf in perpetuity. Cognition is probably spending a lot less than that for just whatever it left after that type of a deal. Remaining team members, etc.
brentm··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
YouTube Premium costs about the same as 2 cold brew coffees and is worth the money.
brentm··on GCP Outage
Yea I am pretty sure that if you're checking if a service is down your essentially casting a vote that indicates that service is down.
brentm··on The Unreliability of LLMs and What Lies Ahead
Yea I just think the true unlock in productivity will come from not requiring a human in the loop.
brentm··on The Unreliability of LLMs and What Lies Ahead
This is a good articulation of what is a real concern around the AI bull thesis.

If a calculator works great 99% of the time you could not use that calculator to build a bridge.

Using AI for more than code generation is still very difficult and requires a human in the loop to verify the results. Sometimes using AI ends up being less productive because you're spending all your time debugging it's outputs. It's great but also there are a lot of questions on if this technology will ultimately lead to the productivity gains that many think are guaranteed in next few years. There is a non zero chance it ends up actually hurting productivity because of all the time wasted trying to get it to produce magic results.

brentm··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
They are according to WSJ:

> Jony Ive, a chief architect of the iPhone, and his design firm are taking over creative and design control at OpenAI, where they will develop consumer devices and other projects that will shape the future look and feel of AI.

https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/former-apple-design-guru-jony-iv...

brentm··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
You're 100% right and in my opinion there is a much higher probability this is a total waste and nothing of similar value will be created. But if you're OpenAI and you have this option I also see why you may take it.
brentm··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
Appears from the outside as a very expensive aquihire but if you're getting the guy who essentially created the iPhone it could be worth it.
brentm··on “Vibe Coding” vs. Reality
I have to say I am extremely sick of this term.
brentm··on Thank HN: My bootstrapped startup got acquired today
Nice win, Congrats!
brentm··on How long does music stardom last? A statistical analysis
Having worked closely with a number of artist that achieved notable level of mainstream success (multiple Billboard Top 40 hits, years of touring) I have to agree with the authors conclusion. Even for those that have successful careers spanning a number of years it's more or less over as soon as it starts. They then spend years chasing what they had but it's near impossible. By the end most end up financially not well off and with little to no career options. It's amazing while it's happening but the candle burns quickly, that being said I doubt many artists would agree.
brentm··on Tiny number of 'supersharers' spread the majority of fake news
I don't think the poster is being too hyperbolic. A very large share of the most vocal on both sides of the political aisle prioritize narrative over truth. Literal truth is less important to these people than something that is maybe not 100% true but captures 100% of what they feel. Tools can help these stories spread less wide but they will not be able to prevent the most ardent from continuing to use these stories as cornerstones of their beliefs. This is probably a small fraction of the country overall but a large share of the active on political X/Twitter.
brentm··on A forged Apple employee badge
Looking at the sellers sale history he has a nice little side hustle selling fake collectors items: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?item=285841371389&rt=nc&_ssn...
brentm··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
We're a very fortunate generation of people to be so concerned over this ad.
brentm··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
I think it is reasonable that Beijing will not allow any sort of sale just for posture purposes. They don't want to be see as forced by Washington to do something and they care less about private economic outcomes than we do here, at least on the surface.
brentm··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
That's a reasonable take but I think practically things need to get done for government to function.
brentm··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
It's either this way or pass nothing ever. Unless the country tilts away from basically 50/50 with two parties that constantly try to undo the other there are few options to get anything through congress.
brentm··on CFPB Takes Action Against Coding Boot Camp BloomTech and CEO Austen Allred
@tommycollison: What’s going to be very important in 5 years’ time that we’re not thinking enough about now?
brentm··on Thoughts on Vision Pro
Agree with his assessment on passthrough. I think it's the #1 disappointment I've found with the Vision Pro. It's good, def better than other devices I've used but it's no where near as good as it has been described.

That being said, video experience, other graphics are a lot better than I expected.

brentm··on Boeing 737 MAX suffers landing gear failure, rolls off runway
The door blowing out is something I'd blame on Boeing but these two incidents this week (tire falling off) and whatever happened here seem not likely their fault?
brentm··on The majority of traffic from X may have been fake during the Super Bowl
Probably bots operated by the X revenue generation skunkworks.
brentm··on Air Canada is responsible for chatbot's mistake: B.C. tribunal
I just can't believe it took a lawsuit to get an airline to fork over a few hundred bucks on something that was obviously their fault.
brentm··on Apple pulls plug on Goldman credit-card partnership
They've been signaling they were pulling out of consumer for the last few quarters.
brentm··on Jury Finds Realtors Conspired, Awards Nearly $1.8B in Damages
The music industry didn't have a patch work of local laws protecting it's thiefdom, unwinding Real Estate is a much more difficult challenge. If it was not I think we would have seen some real inroads by now, it's obviously a massive market.
brentm··on Home schooling's rise from fringe to fastest-growing form of education
I wonder how this all turns out. I know some people will do a great job at educating their kids but I have a feeling that on the average most of these kids will have been better off not home schooled. I think it takes a pretty special type of kid to do the work when the only pressure comes from your mom and dad.
brentm··on Edinburgh couple are handed £17K bill by Tesla as they 'drove in rain'
My BS detector goes off whenever someone that is trying to explain something that might be there fault uses "honestly".

> I honestly can’t remember any huge puddles or anything like that

Something tells me he remembers a fairly big puddle.

brentm··on Tesla is launching their developer APIs
There are 3rd party Tesla apps (Tessie.com) that I presume are.
brentm··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
I'd argue that if you're running a internet based company you do need some growth regardless of what you've raised or not raised. Someone is always trying to cut into your business and if you sit back and ignore everything growth related you will eventually be in a worse position.(Besides competition you do also have other things to consider like every year employees need raises, etc).

What you really gain by not raising capital is freedom to pursue a less risky operating approach and a lower bar for a positive outcome.
