brendannee··on Never Missing the Train Again
I made this BART arrival display website designed to just show upcoming departure times for a specific stop. The idea was that this could be used on a wall mounted display so you could glance at it on your way out the door to help you know how fast to walk. https://bart.blinktag.com
brendannee··on Never Missing the Train Again
This app is fantastic - nice job! It is unique among transit apps in that it shows you only the routes near you and where they go. This lets you explore all the places you could travel to without dealing with transfers.
brendannee··on Apple unveils M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max
Which M3 configuration is the best price/performance option for an average developer? Is there an obvious best choice?
brendannee··on Cosmic luck: NASA’s Apollo 11 moon quarantine broke down
You can go see the Apollo 11 quarantine airstream trailer on display onboard the USS Hornet in Alameda, CA (right across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco). It's a very interesting exhibit (and the Hornet aircraft carrier is fascinating too) and very easy to get to from San Francisco with direct ferry service from the Ferry Building. https://uss-hornet.org
brendannee··on Poor land use in the world’s greatest cities carries a huge cost
"According to one study, employment in the Bay Area around San Francisco would be about five times larger than it is but for tight limits on construction."
brendannee··on Why I Drilled Holes in My MacBook Pro and Put It in the Oven
I did a little holiday baking myself this year - fixing my old Samsung 30" display in a similar way: http://blog.bn.ee/2014/12/22/sometimes-you-just-need-to-bake...
brendannee··on Translating technological terms throws up some peculiar challenges
It would be interesting to review the full list of creative translations:

“Crash” became hookii (a cow falling over but not dying)

“timeout” became a honaama (your fish has got away)

“Aspect ratio” became jeendondiral, a rebuke from elders when a fishing net is wrongly woven.

brendannee··on Traffic Signal Timing Manual: Chapter 4 – Traffic Signal Design
NACTO released the Urban Street Design Guide with more pedestrian, transit and bike friendly designs last year. Here is their chapter on traffic signals: http://nacto.org/usdg/intersection-design-elements/traffic-s...

Several state DOTs have endorsed the NACTO USDG.

brendannee··on Isambard Kingdom Brunel
There is a bizarre animated biography on IKB made by the BBC in 1975:

http://transportationist.org/2012/09/17/great_isambard_kingd...

"It is mostly about Brunel, but it is also telling of the state of the UK in the early 1970s. Something was clearly wrong that this was green-lighted."

What is even stranger is that it won an oscar in 1976.

Its definitely worth watching if you can find it.

brendannee··on Comcast locks value customers out of Sochi streams
vpnuk.info has worked well for me.

The BBC's coverage is pretty good, and you can watch full events for every sport.

Its definitely worth the one-month cost to get access.

Glad to see unicode love hotel works too.

It would be cool to integrate route choice (suggest a variety of routes from short/hillier to longer/flatter) using the API at http://bikesy.com

Unicodelovehotel.com was on hacker news a while back. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3837359

Check out the source to see all the fallbacks I implemented to make at least something show up in most browsers/platforms.

brendannee··on Abusing Emoji in iOS and Your Mac
My http://unicodelovehotel.com site has really been coming in handy lately.
brendannee··on Unicode Love Hotel
You can remap capslock to <lovehotel> for easy access, if you end up typing it a lot.
brendannee··on Unicode Love Hotel
Looks like you can get <unicode>.tk domain names, anyone want 🏩.tk? https://img.skitch.com/20120413-b67rwn29c4aydc73jyt3jfwsnk.j...
brendannee··on Unicode Love Hotel
That was my inspiration for this site.

brendannee··on Unicode Love Hotel
Thanks - I didn't test Opera, I updated it to show only the color (actual) character in opera and not show the fallback image
brendannee··on Unicode Love Hotel
It looks different on OS X between Safari and Chrome - Safari uses the built in Lucida Grande font to render a full color unicode love hotel, chrome tries to use the black and white symbola font.

You actually see a fallback image with the transparent character on top in all other browsers, since there isn't support for unicode characters this high (U+1F3E9). If you highlight and right click on the love hotel character on OS X you'll see "Search google for '🏩'" with the full color love hotel character.

brendannee··on Hacker School: Summer 2012 Applications Open + Etsy Scholarships
Its one of the first HS projects I did, I really wanted to get a handle on what everyone else was working on, and what they had done pre/post hacker school.
brendannee··on Google maps 8bit quest mode. A setup for 4/1 perhaps?
This is fixed - thanks for pointing that issue out!

brendannee··on Prismatic Hopes to Create a New Category of Social News
I love prismatic - its completely replaced Google reader for me. I find that it consistently shows articles that are really relevant to me, from sources I've never even considered. Often, I'll find highly relevant things on prismatic a few hours before a friend emails me the same article that they found through some other source.
brendannee··on Google maps 8bit quest mode. A setup for 4/1 perhaps?
You can use these 8bit tiles in your own project, its quite easy to switch the tile layer of any google maps site: http://blog.bn.ee/2012/03/31/how-to-use-google-maps-8-bit-ti...

I updated walksy.com to use these tiles: http://walksy.com/?8bit

brendannee··on SimpleGeo puts 20 million places in the public domain.
SimpleGeo's places API made it really easy to extend http://walksy.com to generate walking tours on the fly for any US or Canadian city. The fact that places are categorized made it possible to guess about which things would be interesting points for a walking tour.
