break_the_bank··on Why are we templating YAML? (2019)
Obviously biased but we at Kurtosis are trying to solve this problem through Starlark.

We took Starlark added a few more of our instructions that make our Starlark container native. The complex Starlark definition supports

- Composition - you can import a remote definition and just use it - Decomposable - you can break things apart - Parametrizability - want one of a service and 10 of the other, just pass an argument - Portable - It runs pretty much anywhere

Our runtime takes the Starlark and creates environments in both Docker and Kubernetes; from one definition

Our CTO wrote this - https://docs.kurtosis.com/advanced-concepts/why-kurtosis-sta...

We are source available https://github.com/kurtosis-tech/kurtosis

Here is a popular environment definition - https://github.com/kurtosis-tech/ethereum-package that protocol developers use to setup custom Ethereum test environments

break_the_bank··on Show HN: A Chrome Extension to Skip Introductions on YouTube
Didn't know that was a thing! Over a million users, 4.8 rated. Will look into it.
break_the_bank··on Buffett once bet $1M that he could beat a group of hedge funds over 10 years
Apparently Steve Ballmer didn't diversify like Bill Gates did and he will soon over take Bill when it comes to networth if MS keeps going up.
break_the_bank··on Is the S&P 500 Broken?
Can’t comment if the index is broken or is functioning as expected. The answer would be different based on what your time horizon is; pretty sure S&P 500 is highly up since the 1998 peak. It’s at 4500 compared to 1300~ at its peak in 1998.

It will be broken(temporarily) if Nvidia(or take your pick) starts crashing but you might still do better than betting on an individual stock.

break_the_bank··on WeWork Skips $95M in Interest Payments
I am in London as well; I think it depends on where you are going. Also they are being clever with closing meeting rooms, so that people are incentivized to make bookings (use & buy credits) instead of walking into one of the many unlocked meeting rooms.

Still don't know how they can go on though.

break_the_bank··on Show HN: Run Auto-GPT locally in 2 lines
This takes in the entire README here https://github.com/Significant-Gravitas/Auto-GPT#-installati... and converts it into something that you can run on your system in much fewer steps!

If you have Docker running & the CLI installed; Kurtosis allows you to spin up the entire thing with just `kurtosis run github.com/kurtosis-tech/autogpt-package` (think of this as install on brew)

While the run command is `(echo "python -m autogpt" && cat) | kurtosis service shell autogpt autogpt`

I plan on adding support for Weaviate & Milvus running locally. So that instead of Redis you can do one of those backends if you want to. This takes a lot of heavy lifting away from the user & unlike a docker compose you can spin up things conditionally based on the parameter passed. More-ever you don't need to have the compose file locally.

break_the_bank··on Ask HN: How does your development loop look like?
Interesting, that you use a mixture of env vars, flags and files for running the binaries :-).
break_the_bank··on Ask HN: How does your development loop look like?
I do use a debugger and normally use the one built into the IDE (Goland). Currently on Golang + Typescript.
break_the_bank··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
In addition to normal things that suck about layoffs another thing I don't like about the layoffs from Lyft, Coinbase and Stripe is their equity policy. All of them went from fixing the 4 year grant on day one to a fixed yearly dollar value making the # of units you get every year variable. Obviously this only applied to ICs and not directors. Stock goes up you get fewer units, stock goes down you get more units. They said this is to help the employee during a downtime, but during downtimes they just end up laying people off.
break_the_bank··on Ask HN: What's happening with Gmail spam filtering?
Was just discussing this with a collage today. I’m getting random emails that are basically PDFs claiming to be crypto invoices from PayPal form random gmail addressees sent to me and CC’d to paypal@noreply.billing
break_the_bank··on Should notes be end-to-end encrypted?
Do you have something that allows you to publish that as well?

Use case - I want to keep some notes for myself e2e on my laptop & phone but every now and then I'd like to publish a few of them under a pseudonym anonymously on the internet.

break_the_bank··on UK inflation forecast to hit 18.6% next year, energy bills may rise to £6000
Isn’t income over a certain number already taxed at 45%? How much higher are you proposing?
break_the_bank··on AirTag leads to arrest of airline worker accused of stealing from luggage
As someone who has been one bagging for four months now I can’t recommend having an air tag enough.

I have an air tag that stays locked in the same part of the bag that keeps my passport, alternative bank cards, laptop & kindle.

Definitely helps lower anxiety as I stay in hostels, hotels or travel in busses etc. Havent ever had to use it but have used it to see if the bag is still in the bus and moving with me or in the hostels locker while I’m having lunch.

break_the_bank··on GitHub deleted accounts of people who contributed to Tornado Cash repos
The tweet is very low information for me to comment. I can't tell whether these people contributed to Tornado cash before/after the sanctions were in place.

I think a fairer analogy would be, some devs contributed to signal, signal or a derivative of it got used by North Korea/Terrorist/current enemy of choice of the political class. Do we go around and delete the developers GitHub accounts?

Having never used tornado.cash or much of crypto (apart from making some money doing spot trades) I can't comment on what the good use cases are. Here's a sample thread of Vitalik claiming to use Tornado.cash to donate to people in Ukraine https://twitter.com/VitalikButerin/status/155692560223356928.... I can find some other threads like this on Twitter.

This is just another case of Government choosing "security" over privacy and should be scary to folks on HN than be cheered upon.

As a side, I am not sure whether Tornado.cash was marketed specifically for "bad" use cases. In the example below I'd support the DoJ in fining & imprisoning a software engineer for his visit to Pyongyang https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/us-citizen-who-conspired-assi...

break_the_bank··on GitHub deleted accounts of people who contributed to Tornado Cash repos
The nefarious people were probably on a unix system or a windows system. Should we go about and delete their contributors accounts as well?

I’m not at all pro crypto but this enforcement does seem extreme. I do understand that Microsoft is just following the sanctions.

break_the_bank··on Meta is raising the price of the Quest 2 to 400 USD
They dropped the requirement to have a Facebook account for Meta Quest 2 a few weeks ago.
break_the_bank··on Meta launches Sphere, an AI knowledge tool based on open web content
There’s something ironic about a walled garden launching a product based on open web content.
break_the_bank··on Meta managers are urged to identify, push out low performers
That goes against what several of my current & ex meta friends feel during a job search.

No matter what you say about the business, the people are fairly hard working and smart. More hard working than most other FANGs and it shows when they job search.

break_the_bank··on Ask HN: Start a Startup or Join One?
That part I agree with heavily. The upside on starting one vs being the first/second employee is massive.

At the same time if Travis Kalanick/ Mark Zuckerberg hire me as the first engineer then the odds of financial success go up massively.

break_the_bank··on My 40-liter backpack travel guide
I got into one bagging a few months ago after looking at Pieter Levels blog post about it https://levels.io/carry-on-world-travel/ and have been operating from one since the 15th of April.

Bought a minaal 3.0 Cary On after going through the r/onebag community. Also bought some more equipment like an anker power core. Have to do a wash cycle weekly. A down jacket hangs off the bag. A laptop, kindle and my phone are the only electronics I have.

Works very well but in Europe you have to pay for carry on on a lot of airlines and otherwise you can only have something that fits under the seat in front of you.

The minimalism makes life easier. Only one pair of shoes & a pair of flip flops. Depend on the hostel / airbnb to provide a towel. Like Vitalik I have a weeks worth of clothes in the bag and one me.

break_the_bank··on Do kwon sent $80M a month to secret wallets?
tangential but related. It’s a grifters economy. I am worried that nothing would come of this and a few years later a16z would be funding his Series A on his next thing like they did with Adam Neuman and the Goddess Nature Token.
break_the_bank··on Update on Hiring Plans
Last year they went from a normal 4 year grant to an yearly grant of a fix dollar value in order to protect employees from a down turn. Now they ended up doing layoffs, tells you how big a BS this grant structure is.

Stripe, lyft and uber do the same. At Stripe( at least) VPs and up get the standard 4 year fixed number of stock grants which basically creates a class system.

break_the_bank··on Bolt announces layoffs
Given the CEO suggested people buy the equity while taking personal loans in the last raise in February, I doubt the goodness of the severance.
break_the_bank··on Bolt announces layoffs
Wow. How'd they make you pay upfront and still make you wait & vest? This makes no sense.
break_the_bank··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
God of War based on Indian mythological characters like Pashuram or maybe Shiva.
break_the_bank··on YC W22 Stablegains is being sued for losing $42M in funds from 4878 customers
Coinbase & Sequoia funded Indian version of the same thing has similar problems. They claim not to be using anchor while their landing page mentioned anchor before UST de pegged https://mobile.twitter.com/daglihet/status/15240042208687800...

I’m guessing they don’t have enough users and can make people whole using their seed fund.

break_the_bank··on Supply chain attacks and backdoored dependencies
Surprised to see no discussion about the supply chain attacks against Russia where devs added malicious code that would computers with ip addresses in Russia & Belarus.

How does one guard against that? Review every patch?

break_the_bank··on Lumber rally cools with transport snarls easing, buyers balking

break_the_bank··on Ask HN: Anyone have stock option horror stories?
Assuming a standard vesting schedule of 4 years. Wouldn’t you have left with 0.75% of equity?

I wonder if any money would have been left after dilution and preferred shares.
