breadloaf··on Renewables remain cheapest, but cost reductions on hold
That's all is valid only if you have geography and water for such stunt.
breadloaf··on Assassin’s Creed Liberation delisted, unplayable even to owners starting Sept 1
Game can't run without a server and server owner decided to shut them down? Then game is a defective product and customer is eligible for full refund of the game. Those servers will be running forever or should not be necessary at all.
breadloaf··on U.S. Produces More Power from Wind and Solar Than Nuclear for First Time
Because we have cheap, but unreliable sources to run. Will get reversed during first bigger blackout

WSL is not superior, just another interface to do the job. And why not do the job on Windows while using known commands?
breadloaf··on Volkswagen announces $20B effort to build its own EV batteries
That's a lot of money to write off when EV bubble will turn out to be unsustainable because raw materials are already through the roof and energy prices in EU are following same trend. It only gets better when Germans will switch off remaining nuclear power plants.

On the other hand we have chip crisis slowly fading away (thanks crypto crash) and prices for oil preparing for climb down as well.

Nothing more ethic than using batteries for which raw materials were dug out by children.

Black electric tape.
breadloaf··on Nuclear turn green as EU parliament approves new taxonomy
I'm always a bit baffled by the amount of pro-renewables comments on HN. Is energy storage solved problem, or are people in northern latitudes going to freeze to death during winter?
breadloaf··on Tesla is no longer the largest EV producer
One thing is mistake in process - i.e. Toyota or ID4 problems. Other thing is deliberate use of low grade, but cheaper parts, which can't long term survive in given environment. So your "perspective" makes no sense, only mudding waters.
breadloaf··on Tesla is no longer the largest EV producer
For example this [0] They used non-automotive grade LCD, which due to heat in summer will go into yellow discoloration or LCD will start leaking adhesive or will just die.

This. Thank you. Instead of playing expensive cat-and-mouse game, just make it legal for anyone to buy it and make money on taxing it.
breadloaf··on Toyota’s Chief Says Electric Vehicles Are Overhyped (2020)
EVs are completely missing masses. Only rich people have money to buy a car for 30k-60k EUR

eBike = how to expose yourself to elements and then get instantly killed because you didn't see red light.
breadloaf··on Toyota’s Chief Says Electric Vehicles Are Overhyped (2020)
Yes, let's completely ignore fact, that solar does not work over night, time when most people are instructed to charge their EVs.
breadloaf··on Ask HN: Can competitors catch up to Apple Silicon?
In general what I see as a massive issue for ARM and big win for x86 is standardization (or in case of ARM lack of)

- Can you run ARM system on any ARM processor, or are you limited by core architecture, endianness (BE/LE), and RAM addressing, forcing you to recompile for specific SoC? I honestly don't know what are the exact limitations.

- Can you boot any ARM processor in one specific way like x86 processor? No you can't. Every ARM processor has its own booting mechanism and you basically need to bend your system to it.

This lack of standardization is the reason, why Android phones does not have universal Lineage OS, but has build for phone X, build for phone Y, build for tablet Z and on the other hand this basic standardization is what will keep x86 alive for decades to come.

breadloaf··on The trimodal nature of software salaries in the Netherlands and Europe (2021)
7 years ago, I don't really remember anymore.
breadloaf··on The trimodal nature of software salaries in the Netherlands and Europe (2021)
I tried to on the Upwork. But it is really hit or miss there.

1. I got hardware electric engineer to help me with a design of PCB. Guy was worth every cent.

2. Got embedded developer on separate project. Guy pretended that he can do a lot. I tried to explain to him, that I need a USB CDC device driver in MCU which has USB PHY and I want Windows to recognize and use usbser.sys (generic COM driver) or something similar. He told me that he understand what he is doing, I sent him the dev kit and then he ghosted me and I have ended up doing it myself with TinyUSB.

So as I said, really hit and miss on Upwork. Some people are writing lofty skillset so they can get more per hour and then failing miserably.

breadloaf··on The trimodal nature of software salaries in the Netherlands and Europe (2021)
Well that really depends. I was outsourcing to India when it was still cheap. I probably did something wrong, but I provided definition of the project, set of unit tests and access to git repository so they can upload the result. I got completely useless trash code, incoherent excuses and wasted time.

I paid the company for their "work" and never considered outsourcing again. Sometimes cheap means horrendously expensive.

breadloaf··on Google’s Android Automotive OS is coming to BMW cars next year
Beautiful thinking. Now back to reality - let's randomly play ads through your car audio system while driving and at max volume. Of course we will block your ability to control said audio system for duration of an ad so you can't skip nor mute the ad, duh. Enjoy your internet connected car.

> Diesel engines almost all have a turbo, gas engines almost never to

In USA are humungous engines (5.0l +) without a turbo In EU are mini engines (1.0l ~ 3.0l) and almost always with turbo. Is it better fuel economy?

breadloaf··on Thunderbird 102
User has no business in learning anything about file systems. This is basic UX error and one of many cuts, which are keeping Desktop Linux on its 1% market share.
breadloaf··on Ask HN: Why are EVs significantly more expensive than Gasoline Vehicles?
Expensive raw materials which are raking up prices as demand grows and supply can't. It is like a reverse economy of scale - the more OEMs do, the more expensive end product will become because more entities will be competing for limited supply of current mining output of lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper.
breadloaf··on Ask HN: Why are EVs significantly more expensive than Gasoline Vehicles?
They would be also classified as micro cars or straight out electric bikes with a roof. So it really depends what you define as a car.

I.e. A tent can be house too, but I don't think that most of people want to buy a place for tent when they are talking about buying a house.

breadloaf··on Arkansas Bill (2021) Establishing a Database for Tracking Women Seeking Abortion
I am glad that EU has GDPR and this thing would be short lived and expensive.
breadloaf··on Ask HN: What is your reason leaving the previous company?
Aren't you from automotive? Because I was leaving from there from exactly same reasons + another PITA were endless and pointless training sessions - Lean, 5S, managing, manufacturing, ... and all of that despite the fact that we were only software branch which never had any access to production.
breadloaf··on SpaceX asserts 5G would ‘blow out’ satellite users in 12 GHz band
Potential is theoretically massive, practically miniscule, because of Starlink cost, it can target only 1) relatively rich people 2) living in nowhere.

That's actually very narrow niche.

breadloaf··on Cheap, green hydrogen would be a breakthrough in clean energy
I was honestly thinking that he is talking about CCS fleet gas pay cards.
