brandonhorst··on Show HN: Lacona – Search and natural language commands for Mac
It'll be up on Setapp tomorrow. Not planning to sell directly at the moment.

Thus far, the Sandbox hasn't been a limitation for what I want to do - it's pretty clear that that's the way that Apple is moving, and I don't want to invest too much into something that Apple could eventually put behind some very scary dialogs, or worse.

brandonhorst··on Face ID and Touch ID for the Web
All of that is managed by the Secure Enclave in exactly the same way that it is for all over auth on Apple devices. The browser doesn't touch it at all.

Web 2.0. Such a bright outlook in those days :)
brandonhorst··on Apple Mail randomly becomes the frontmost application in macOS
You can fix this by removing the “Google” account and connecting to Gmail as a regular IMAP account.

Since I did that, I haven’t had any issues with this.

brandonhorst··on New WebKit Features in Safari 13.1
Siri can also show web results on watch. I believe the News app uses WebView as well.

I distinctly remember using that feature on Windows 98

Google Search App. The app called "Google" on Android and iOS.
brandonhorst··on The Failure of the iPad
None of this is true in modern iOS.
brandonhorst··on The iPad Awkwardly Turns 10
It's no longer true since iOS 13. Safari has a full-featured download manager now.
brandonhorst··on Add '127.0.0.1 xn–9q8h' to /etc/hosts gives you "localghost"
There is already an emoji for the company:  (only works on iStuff)

Swift handles this exact problem quite elegantly with the "if case let" construct, allowing you to destructure sum types directly within an if statement.

brandonhorst··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
Karabiner can map it to Esc on its own, but to Ctrl if you combine it with another key. Best of both worlds.
brandonhorst··on Show HN: Bloom – A free and open source 'Google'
FWIW, I work for Google (not on google.com), and would definitely fit into the "geek" category, and I still assumed you were talking about an OSS search engine.
brandonhorst··on How I Run a Company with ADHD
It is the exact same thing. The first cup of black tea brewed from given leaves has about half as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.
brandonhorst··on Google Will Soon Let Users Automatically Scrub Location and Web History
You're in luck! Those requirements were removed months ago. You can use Assistant with those settings disabled no problem.
brandonhorst··on Moving from Ruby to Rust
This is already the world with JavaScript. It can be nice as the compiled code is still humanly understandable.
brandonhorst··on Why Can a Machine Beat Mario but Not Pokemon?
Considered building something like this last year, and couldn't find any prior art online. Looking forward to reading your report!
brandonhorst··on Google Maps is no longer a flat map
Unfortunately, the line drawing doesn't make this as cool as it could be. The line representing the flight from BOS to PEK is drawn due west, as would look natural on a 2D map. The real flight (and shortest route) heads north and passes near the north pole.

Hope they can update this, which would make international flights seem even more impressive than they already do.

brandonhorst··on Google Books and the open web
Google has been doing this for ages, not only with Books results but web search results. If the query is associated with some Entity, it will return various (hopefully useful) about that entity even if they do not contain text involved at all.

This is how, for example the query "that movie where there are two magicians" returns varied results about The Prestige, whereas "that movie where there are four magicians" returns various results about Now You See Me.

A pure text search would likely return very similar results, but the entity mapping heavily impacts the search results.

> I don't get the obsession americans have with reducing huge demographics into single buckets.

The irony.

brandonhorst··on The Shallowness of Google Translate
If you put a newline in the middle of a word English, it changes the meaning too.
brandonhorst··on Chrome Apps are dead, as Google shuts down the Chrome Web Store section
It's going away for non-ChromeOS systems.
brandonhorst··on Lacona – Real Natural Language Text Commands for Mac [In-Browser Demo]
Out-of-the-box, no (I needed to cap myself to prevent scope creep). But adding that functionality as a custom command would be very trivial. If a member of the community does not make a custom command very early on, I will likely do it myself, because that would be super useful.

Custom Commands are built using Javascript, and have all of the power of Node.JS at their disposal. Check out more details here: https://github.com/lacona/kickstarter-nerd-details
