branchless··on C++ Headers are Expensive
The only advantage of c++ is max perf. If we could skip a beat we couldn't justify using c++.

branchless··on Linus Torvalds apologizes for his behavior, takes time off
Agreed. What can be worse than having a comment to the effect of "if x is -1, which is feasible, this will cause undefined behaviour resulting in a crash". For most people this stings more than enough.
branchless··on Air-conditioners do great good, but at a high environmental cost
Does anyone really care about the environment? It's in front of our eyes every day. Supermarkets have superfluous packaging. They have fridges without any doors on pumping out cold air constantly. We have advertisements sucking energy constantly. Bitcoin uses a significant chunk of the world electricity? It's "innovative"! Massive commutes to completely pointless jobs where companies compete to deliver the pointless service before employees travel 90 minutes back to their inadequately insulated home.

If someone came down from space to visit us and we said we are trying to fix the environment they'd laugh.

We are in this mess because our system inexorably leads to it. We've been in this mess since we adopted this system. We have to ditch it.

Inflation figures don't include land prices.
branchless··on Squeezed: Why Our Families Can’t Afford America
Nope this guy has a good job. Not about mobility. This is about rentiers. People need to read "Progress and poverty" by Henry George. Land prices are the issue.
branchless··on A world of free movement would be $78T richer
Which is the case in most urban centres, where most people are.
branchless··on A world of free movement would be $78T richer
What % of people is this? Vast majority this isn't the case. Many degrees are worthless so don't lump them in.
branchless··on A world of free movement would be $78T richer
Add 10% to the economy, let's imagine for once it's passed onto wages, also up 10%.

Rents up 10%. Everyone working longer for the landlords.

Gains go to land under the current system. We already added women to the workforce more, rents went up.

people looking after their own children are:

1. providing good child care

2. adding value

Agreed, not finished it yet, but several very funny bits.

"Just so we're on the same page here: you're wrong"!

branchless··on Ask HN: What are some great books that are relatively unknown in the US?
Henry George: Progress and Poverty.

Explains how taxing land instead of labour is the path to a far better world. Versus now where progress means higher land prices which means poverty for those excluded from land.

Once nearly got to be mayor of New York. Sold 6 million copies (at the time only the bible outsold it).

As recommended by Albert Einstein and many others.

branchless··on Librarian wins surprise judgement against Equifax in small claims court
A really great book, very entertaining and interesting.
branchless··on Birth Rates Dropped Most in U.S. Counties Where Home Prices Grew Most
It's the average. If the median wage was $1MM all goods would be way more expensive.

But all this is wrong because rents rise to soak up income. If we all earned $1MM rents would be most of that if all other goods stayed the same.

Greaber actually critiques this in the first chapter, disagreeing that hairdresser is a "bullshit job".
branchless··on For more and more people, work appears to serve no purpose
Investment bank research. A trader had said "it's the brand recognition between picking it up from my inbox and putting it in the bin".
branchless··on Developers are manufacturing prefabricated apartment buildings
No more land can be manufactured, supply is inelastic. In urban areas you are going to have to bid against everyone else and the highest bidder, who agrees to work for the most years for the land, wins.

Rezoning isn't going to fix this IMHO. It might help, but you will reach a limit and then have the same root cause to deal with: rentiers.

branchless··on Developers are manufacturing prefabricated apartment buildings
Zoning isn't going to fix all of this for you. It's highly unlikely supply will ramp up to avoid bidding at the monopoly price.
branchless··on Developers are manufacturing prefabricated apartment buildings
Nope. In urban areas land is undersupplied therefore you will be paying the "monopoly price" where you bid what you can afford.

So if a building used to cost 400k, broken into 200k land cost and 200k building cost, it will still cost 400k, 300k land cost and 100k building cost.

That's how prices are set. It's not "how much this costs to build plus a fair profit".

branchless··on Magit 2.13 released
It's far superior to the intellij integration as they have a generic "version control".

Magit is just so easy to use for discarding hunks / rebasing / etc. Quick, visually clear. I sometimes use emacs just to use magit when working with java on a fiddly git task even when I'm working in intellij to modify the actual code.
