bramgg··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2015)
So, do you guys just blindly downvote anyone that even moderately disagrees with dang or what?
bramgg··on Pure CSS FizzBuzz
Agreed, I can't believe people are taking that blog post seriously. It's literally FizzBuzz we're talking about.
bramgg··on Ask HN: Is HTML broken as it is, so why Jade?
> The problem with your "15 seconds" example is that it is almost completely unreadable. .container? Ok, .container what? Is it a <p>? <div>? <span>?

It takes 2 seconds to learn and forever on know that Jade defaults non-specified tags to divs.

For me Jade is faster to both write and read.

bramgg··on Jq – A Command-line JSON processor
That's exactly what I did with Pouch (https://github.com/bramgg/pouch).
bramgg··on PixelBlock – Stop people from tracking your email opens
No Chrome extension can know which images are being used to track email opens. If you want to disable that sort of tracking you should disable images/external resources completely. Otherwise you're just getting a false sense of security.

bramgg··on Domains – use it or lose it
> If a domain is not used for an actual website for three months it is automatically unregistered. How could this be done with software?

It can't. Are you really suggesting releasing other people's domains "with software"?

bramgg··on 'Silicon Valley Is Coming' Warns JP Morgan CEO
I want my bank to give me quirky little compliments like "you look nice today" like Slack every time I walk in.
bramgg··on Show HN: UnSend.it Beta, modify / unsend any email after it's been sent
I have no affiliation with the product, but since the email protocol obviously doesn't actually allow altering emails after they've been sent, I can tell you the only two ways something like this could operate.

1) The email isn't actually sent when you click send. There's a delay where you can go back and edit/delete it. This is effectively the same as saving an email as a draft and then having it auto-send five minutes later.

2) The email is actually just text on an external image or on some external web page visible through an iFrame. Neither of these really work because modern day email services like Gmail cache images and pass them through their own servers. Most email clients also block iFrames by default.

Based on their website I assume UnSend.it uses one of number 2. An interesting hack and definitely Hacker News worthy, but in practice I don't think it can be reliable.

There is also always the possibility that I'm wrong and there's a secret method #3, but I really doubt that.

bramgg··on Which domains should I block in etc/hosts?
...And spend your life managing hosts? If this is only for your browser install uBlock and add whatever filters you're interested in. You can also go one step further and disable JavaScript, only re-enabling it for sites you care about as you go. If this is for other software you might want to reconsider what you install on your computer.
bramgg··on What motivate you to do a live streaming to the public?
> Now a day the live streaming through smart phone is booming due to the appearance of Meerkat and periscope.

No it's not :p

bramgg··on Why My MOOC Is Not Built on Video
> community is probably biased towards people who are (1) a little bit smarter than average

[citation needed]

I agree that on average we're much more willing to learn things ourselves and interested in the subjects you listed, but I reject the idea that the community prefers text content because we're smarter than average. One problem with HN being connected to YC (though it comes with a lot of upsides) is that people will always go out of their way to appear smart. Everyone knows that can help their chances of getting accepted.

Sure, literally everyone that has replied to my original comment has said they're in favor of learning by reading plain text, but the fact is less HN users would have followed along with Sam Altman's "How to Start a Startup" course had it been in that format.

bramgg··on Why My MOOC Is Not Built on Video
I see this opinion voted to the top of Hacker News all the time. People seem to forget that watching something in video format is just so damn convenient, and requires little effort.
bramgg··on Ask HN: What non-computer system have you hacked to your advantage?
Side question, am I crazy or has YC just removed this semi-iconic question from their application page?
bramgg··on Ask HN: Prove me wrong: email ain't dying
"email is dying"

bramgg··on I Am Sam Altman, President of Y Combinator. AMA
And can you please tell us what you're hoping to discover about a founder with that question :)

Side question, mostly just for fun, have people's answers to that question ever been blatantly illegal?

bramgg··on Show HN: I made a Twitch floating player with floating chat (for Chrome)
This is amazing. Any chance on Firefox/Open source?
bramgg··on Show HN: I hacked git.io to shorten any url
For those that are wondering, it's a secondary URL redirecting service hosted on GitHub Pages.

bramgg··on Ask HN: Why is the word “Cyber” objected to and what are the alternatives?
Because it's associated with people who have no idea what they're talking about, or are marketing to those who have no idea what they're talking about[0].

Alternatives: Computer? Depends on the circumstance.

bramgg··on Show HN: InboxTunes. Sends one song per day to your inbox
Neat idea, I hate having to go looking for new music. My current solution is listening to the recent uploads of a few music curators on YouTube that I like.

You should definitely give more information on your website and provide examples of past songs you've sent. The whole "minimal to the point of no information" trend is bullshit. I signed up with fake info and it just said "great". I would not join this service as is. This post also likely violates the Show HN rules[0].

> Show HN is for something you've made that other people can play with.

> For example, blog posts, email signups, and fundraisers can't be tried out, so they don't count as Show HNs.

bramgg··on Media Hacking
I love the quote “a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on", but I think a more modern version would be "a lie circles the world a thousand times before the truth has a chance to get its pants on, at which point everybody's moved on".
bramgg··on Show HN: Eg – examples at the command line
Great idea and implementation, but I feel the need to mention for anyone wanting something like this that it's already been made better. Bro pages[0] has a community actively adding and moderating examples right from the command line itself.

bramgg··on I’m a 12-year-old girl. Why don’t the characters in my apps look like me?
> In one game, “Survival Run with Bear Grylls,” you can put the character in a Santa Claus suit for $1.98, but there is no girl to be had at any price. Does this mean that girls aren’t capable of escaping a bear, but Santa is?

Another classic example of girls that are capable of escaping bears being unrepresented in tech. I kid, by seriously the cause of this isn't game devs being sexest against girls, it's (IMO) society being sexist in general. Boys (not men) will not play games that look like they may be made for girls because of what society might think of them. The fear of being bullied for enjoying anything pink or featuring women is very real for most boys growing up, especially (but not only) if the boy is already feeling confused and ashamed of what his sexuality might be. Since the mobile game market is dominated by children, having the main character be female can potentially scare away a large percentage of the market. Unless the game is already clearly "girly", then the risk just isn't worth it.

TL;DR: Boys playing girls = gay, girls playing boys = normal.
