bradfordw··on Pinterest = No Unit Tests
I'm not saying they're not useful, pinterest is hardly a giant in my opinion, they do one thing and clearly do it well. I'm sure their position on unit tests will change, hopefully before they are burned.
bradfordw··on Pinterest = No Unit Tests
You don't get big by writing a lot of tests (or checks). You get big by getting stuff done with competent people that pay attention to the changes they apply. YMMV
bradfordw··on Poll: Do you think HN should go dark in protest of SOPA?
Yes. This will be the most productive day of the week.
bradfordw··on The Navy Unveils "Cicada": Now Even the Drones Have Drones
Yo dawg, I heard you like drones...
bradfordw··on Ask HN: Is brogrammer a sexist term?
Brogrammer? No. If someone referred to a female co-worker as a Hogrammer, then yes.
bradfordw··on Basho's Contact Form - I hope these guys are serious
Fairly certain they have a few people already doing this. Lots of happy customers over there from the sounds of it and not just fly-by-night operations either.
bradfordw··on When is a URL shortener not a URL shortener?

bradfordw··on IE team sends a cupcake for FireFox 5
They spent all that money on Skype and now this is all they can afford. It's the thought that counts.
bradfordw··on The Rise of Erlang
Erlang deployment (IMHO) has never been easier: see rebar. It's trivial for a layperson to not only deploy/distribute Erlang applications, but also deploy the hot code upgrades. See: https://github.com/basho/rebar

bradfordw··on Congress Bans Some Scientific Collaboration with China, Citing Espionage Risk
Heh, so are we going to kick out their students which we've enrolled in some of our top research universities?
bradfordw··on Riak To Support Secondary Indices
Sorry, I'm going to make an assumption that by interface difficulty you mean it's ability to be queried (map reduce only + lucene {optional})? Also, nothing forces you to use protobuffs, you can tell riak what (via the content type of an http header) what your data is and get it back as such. I don't see that as a weakness.
bradfordw··on Ask HN: Who's hiring Data Scientists/Machine Learning Engineers?
I saw this via twitter this morning, not sure what clover is, but: https://www.clover.com/jobs.html
bradfordw··on So you want to do the SICP...
I've been working on it (prof. Erlang programmer) via Racket. I'm only on section 2.3 and I've gone through section 1's exercises several times. You really gain an appreciation for math to controlling flow as opposed to something being "null" or matching a certain condition. It's good stuff once it starts to click. Painful, but I think it will pay off in the long run. I've only been at it part-time for 5 weeks!
bradfordw··on Woman Sells First Spot in iPad 2 Line For $900
I'm SURE she'll report that on her 2011 taxes, right?!
bradfordw··on Ask HN: How do you 'finish' your projects?
You can look at this as more of a "philosophical" question. Is software ever really "done"? There will be much back and forth, I don't think this question is really answerable. If you need to hand it over to someone else; then yes. Once it matches the specs that they intended for it, then I would consider it done.

If you wish to continue making changes as you come up with them; that's perfectly fine, but remember the more that codebase changes, the higher the likelihood that something can (and will) go wrong.

It's a good question and this will certainly drum up a good discussion here, I look forward to seeing what everyone else says.

bradfordw··on Does "You are what you eat" apply to developing?
I'd go more along the philosophy of "you are what you read" when it comes to development. No one knows everything (or anything for that matter) so you should constantly try to better yourself.
bradfordw··on Is Mubarak still president?
No, but he's apparently working for github now!
bradfordw··on Reddit is hiring. We're looking for 3 rockstar programmers.
Of all the places; really? You went with the "rockstar" moniker for hires?
bradfordw··on Liberals outnumber conservative academics - Unbiasing Academia
Agreed. We should file this under "knock me down with a feather" -- waste!
bradfordw··on Silicon Valley geeks have their own ‘Fight Club’. I kid you not. [video]
Personally, I think hockey is a great outlet for developers (being one that plays of course). It is physically and mentally taxing, but most of all it requires teamwork; I can't think of anything that matches better. Sometimes you square off with someone on the ice and that's where it stays. When it does happen, it's far more raw than any staged combat -- I'll take that rush any day. Plus, you get a solid workout in the meantime!
bradfordw··on Super Awesome Sylvia shows super simple Arduino
My kids love this show and has gotten them sincerely interested in electronics (and putting cut-outs on sticks for puppet play) - keep up the good work!
bradfordw··on Erlang, the next Java
No, not a typo or a joke, the mentality of an Erlang programmer is to (and this gets beaten to death in books) "Let it crash." It is ok to let processes fail, you build restart strategies for certain processes so that when they do fail, your supervisors know: how often to try to restart, how many times and of course which module.

I hate to be "that guy" - but you mean "too," right?
bradfordw··on Reia: Friendly, Ruby-style syntax on the Erlang VM
Don't cheat yourself...Erlang itself is not that hard once you understand the core principles. I will say that OTP can be overwhelming, but with tools like rebar taking care of the bulk of it for you now, it's much more accessible to beginners. The learnyousomeerlang.com guide as well as the "Erlang and OTP in Action" book are really great resources for starting out. Stick with it, you'll be glad you did.
