braderhart··on Dropbox Amendment to Form S-1
Dropbox has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Always eating resources, can't provide changelogs, and terrible customer service. File sharing services are a dime a dozen now, heck Nextcloud is free and does more than Dropbox. No one just uses Dropbox anymore unless it was forced on their phone through some backroom deal. If anyone tries other providers they wouldn't switch back, there is no reason to anymore. They have nothing valuable to offer at this point but they want to make sure to grab as much money as they can on their way down.
braderhart··on Who will steal Android from Google?
Vulkan and Wayland are going to steal Android away soon, because you will no longer need it.

Actually they do, but those sales people will make sure payoffs are part of the purchase, and even if you get fired for calling out the conflict of interests, it is usually harder for an honest employee to fight a multi-billion dollar company that has professional propaganda departments.

Are you serious? You have to link me to a GitHub issue where they still don't clearly explain their license, and then if you read the comments you can see tons of other concerns that they never address. It is almost like they want to keep spying on you and exploiting.. hmm, strange. Weird that they have so many trade offs for privacy always. I see small two-person teams doing more work and good for software than mega-corporations like Microsoft.
braderhart··on Vulkan is coming to macOS and iOS, but no thanks to Apple
Yes, I am well-versed. You can play many games in Linux and I have Steam installed on my Arch distro with latest stable kernel and graphics drivers, and they are all automatically updated using my package manager and aurutils for extended third-party. It is so much faster than PowerShell, and my i3 windows manager is much more efficient.

I just got new laptops that will support both GVT-G and PCI passthrough via OVMF so that I can run my bloatware OS in a KVM VM but still get full 3D acceleration. Hopefully Microsoft decides to contribute heavily back to Wine, or maybe open source their 4GB spyware beast to understand what it is actually doing that makes it so large compared to my distro, which does everything Windows does in much less resources both storage and compute.

It's called Vulkan.

Well, usually poor resource utilization means bad design all around. You can always buy more powerful hardware, but it won't fix something that is fundamentally flawed. Text editors are very personal to me. I spend a lot of time learning shortcuts and tricks that are easily cross-platform and portable, and Vim is very easy to do that and is still actively maintained by a great community of well-versed developers that aren't just getting another paycheck from a mega-corporation pretending to do some social good.
braderhart··on Xray – An experimental next-generation Electron-based text editor
Moral of story.. don't leave nice shovels in the yard and don't install crappy spyware OS like Windows on nice new computer.
braderhart··on Xray – An experimental next-generation Electron-based text editor
Neovim is mostly still Vim, but with some built-in extensions and packaged plugins. Vim is still great if you don't mind managing a few preferred plugins yourself, and (at least on Arch) it comes packaged with some pretty sane defaults. Overall though, Vim has made huge improvements in the area.
braderhart··on Xray – An experimental next-generation Electron-based text editor
Can't speak for op of comment, but everyone suggests this... yes I've tried it and no I really don't want it no matter how many times it is mentioned.

I am happy with Vim for myself now, and am glad that I moved beyond the bloated IDE way of thinking, including Visual Studio Code. Yes, Atom had its shortcomings in that arena, but I'd still prefer to use Atom over Visual Studio, due mostly in fact that the project has contributed more to the community. Microsoft has made a single exception to abandon their native language frameworks and to use a bloated JavaScript jungle of software dependency hell that no one ever audits, in order to build a text-editor in a web browser that performs like Crysis and makes you feel that they are mining cryptocurrencies in some encoded javascript module. Vim on the other hand is pure text editor built in quality-optimized C and comes with pretty much every feature baked in. Atom is created and maintained in large by GitHub, and they have a much better reputation towards open source.

braderhart··on Spotify Form F-1
I cancelled my Spotify premium membership after being a customer for over 2 years, because they refuse to actually develop their application. Their music discovery and playlist radio functionality are horrific right now. They are on repeat essentially, with no way to unlike music that you have liked or accidentally liked.
braderhart··on Spotify Form F-1
Spotify app is so terrible, once you like something, it doesn't give you an option to unlike it.
braderhart··on Vulkan is coming to macOS and iOS, but no thanks to Apple
Simple solution = installing operating systems that support open standards.
braderhart··on How poverty changes your mindset
Many non-religious groups do exist, but depending on where you live they are not the norm. I am happy to try to start my own non-profit, but I also realize that I have to be careful of what time I commit personally right now until I can find more ways to give back.

You have some of the best ideas. I would love to get more involved in helping with programs like these. Substance abuse can be the most challenging to approach. From my experience, some people are on a self-destructive path and they forget how to take care of themselves. Some drugs are almost zombifying in that they are begin to only think about their next fix.

I would like to see more options here for medicine and research. Truly, recovery can be a long process for many and it takes time for the brain and body to heal from trauma. Some of that may be emotional trauma as well. I would love to see more options for preventive mental health services in the United States.

"It may be hard to believe that there was a time when Amazon, Netflix, Facebook, Gmail, Twitter etc didn't exist.

Not really.. I dream all the time of a land where decentralized exchanges exist for these services, and that a clunky web browser is not required for accessing information online.

braderhart··on How poverty changes your mindset
I resonate the feeling and agree that people need to also take responsibility, however I see people all the time making poor choices, and it isn't just poor people. If you're down on your luck, that $6 coffee ritual may be not sound so bad at the moment. Someone who is exhausted, and probably malnourished (surprisingly common in America), will say to themselves... I'm craving a delicious coffee and hopefully it'll give me enough energy to keep going, and sometimes it does work temporarily.
braderhart··on How poverty changes your mindset
Thank you for sharing your story. I feel so much empathy towards you and your family, and I'm sorry to hear about your father feeling so bitter towards the system afterwards. I don't blame him.

When I see people screaming and walking down the streets talking to themselves, I see people that need love. I see people that need to be taken in, not just for a night, but for a year or longer... so they can stop stressing about where they'll get their next meal, or if they'll have someplace warm and safe to sleep at night.

It is so easy for people to judge them.. say that it is their fault for being down on their luck. When you're homeless, you just get used to people assuming the worse... heck you even start to assume the worse about yourself. You say, why is it that no one cares to see that I'm hurting inside. People judge them for not taking whatever work is available for the day, because they assume... hey, one day helps, right... well when you're homeless, the help of one person is kind and does help for a bit, but what what people need in America are communities helping them.

Unfortunately, you will likely have to go to religious services and pretend to care about religion enough to get the help you need, because that is who America has designated as their community support system.

@gaius: Now I'm blocked from responding to you. The only source code I could find for Microsoft, is for debugging, and doesn't give you access to all the source. You have to use a smart card that they send as well.

Here is the license for Android:

https://source.android.com/setup/licenses

Where is the license for Winblows?

braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
So, if you go here:

https://source.android.com/

Or here:

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/

Compile it and run it, you are inventory of Google for compiling free source code that you can modify however you want? Where do you get the source code like that to compile for Windows?

braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
No response, just downvotes... I see.
braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
You mean, like if I were to go buy a laptop pretty much anywhere, and they just include Windows in the laptop price??? I don't see how that is any different. I can go buy an unlocked Android phone at Costco for $199 that has Android 7.1.1. I know that I am paying for the hardware, and the OS is free.

So, you are basically trying to say that proprietary is better because we don't know what the open source version costs? Well, you have the source code... so I guess you may not be willing to look inside, but the other one you don't have the option to even look.

braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
There are people working on a decentralized web that doesn't require clunky (impossible-to-fully-audit) web browsers and it is JavaScript free.
