bradbeattie··on A new render loop for web animation
http://popmotion.io/guides/feature-comparison implies that popmotion is a free library, but http://popmotion.io/subscribe says it's $9/month. It also fails to mention the difference between Popmotion and PopmotionPro. Any insight on this?
bradbeattie··on Mimic – abusing Unicode to create tragedy
Add the following to your ~/.vimrc to always highlight non-ascii characters:

    au BufWinEnter * let w:matchnonascii=matchadd('ErrorMsg', "[\x7f-\xff]", -1)
bradbeattie··on CryptoBallot: Secure Online Voting
I get that it's a tangential problem, but vote splitting as a result of first past the post is just as bit a problem. Given the option between paper ballots with something like the Schulze Method vs secure online voting with FPTP, I'd rather take the former.
bradbeattie··on The New York Times Makes 17k Recipes Available Online
Needs community tagging of recipes. The recipe of the day is vegan and vegetarian, but has neither tag (both of which already exist: http://cooking.nytimes.com/tag/vegan). No doubt this problem exists for other tags and other recipies in the database.

Edit: A cursory search through the BBC's recipe database shows their tags to be notably more thorough, though at times mistaken (butter labeled vegan in http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/sugar_and_spice_67172) and unfortunately just as immutable at the NYT site.

bradbeattie··on Crowdfunding Is Driving a Board Game Renaissance
The boardgames renaissance that I've seen grow ever the past 15 years has gone hand in hand with the increased fickleness of video games. I can't establish causation, but I'd wager that there's an appeal to a physical offline social game in contrast to the mandatory online, anonymity-fueled abrasive, potentially-unplayable-in-5-years digital games.

I like the idea that the boardgames I buy, barring physical abuse, will be playable by future generations in 20 years time. You can't "end-of-life" a physical product.

bradbeattie··on Why internationalization of commands is a very bad idea
Mind pointing out which one? http://www.omniglot.com/language/phrases/yesnomaybe.htm
bradbeattie··on Show HN: MapChat – A simple location based chat in 300 lines of code
I'm not so sure about distance. Maybe based on your zoom level? Because if you're zoomed out, I'd guess you want more notifications than if you're zoomed in on a city or region.
bradbeattie··on Show HN: MapChat – A simple location based chat in 300 lines of code
Notifications should be limited to the messages visible within your bounding box. If I've zoomed in on a city, I don't want notifications from somewhere half-way around the world.
bradbeattie··on Let's Encrypt Overview
The overview speaks of a "here's my key!" / "you are registered!" step that letsencrypt-nosudo doesn't seem to have. It seems that your first communication with the CA is during step 2 (requesting challenges). Does this affect your script's ability to do things like subject alternative names?
bradbeattie··on Duolingo Raises $45M, Now Valued at $470M
I don't mean to nitpick, but the phrase "my best" sounds strange. "It is my favourite" or "It is the best" sound notably better.
bradbeattie··on The Sign Language Interpreter of the Rappers
A couple of videos of the signing in question:

bradbeattie··on How to learn 30 languages
Minor corrections then if you don't mind?

"If..., then..." and "I've spoken English for decades."

bradbeattie··on Lily – Drone camera
Without a human operator assessing risk, what's to stop the drone from accidentally flying into someone and cutting them up with its blades?
bradbeattie··on The Invention of the Baby Carrot
Intermarché in France did just that: https://vimeo.com/98441820
bradbeattie··on Rat Park
Further, scroll a few pages using your scrollwheel, then press the right key. You'd expect to continue to the right, but instead are scrolled all the way back to the left to page #2. Eesh.
bradbeattie··on The Interface Hall of Shame

bradbeattie··on A new wave of videogames offers lessons in powerlessness, scarcity and failure
I just wish the game didn't make it glaringly obvious whom you can kill without taking a morale hit. Overhearing some folks talk about how happy they are to have killed the drivers of a civilian supply truck was just a glaring "You can kill these people and not feel remorse" flag.

I would have loved it all the more if all the NPCs were shades of grey instead of more obvious blacks and whites.

bradbeattie··on The Secret to the Uber Economy Is Wealth Inequality
Might be better then to consider the inequality-adjusted HDI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_inequalit...
bradbeattie··on Google is developing cancer and heart attack detector
I would hope they investigate whether the ingestion of "disease-detecting nanoparticles" increases one's risk of cancer.
bradbeattie··on William Gibson Writes the Future
I understand your concern about Necromancer, but Gibson's essay In The Visegrips of Dr Satan provides some insights into his desire for a modern mythology, which is likely more what he was aiming for: http://www.williamgibsonbooks.com/archive/2003_01_28_archive...
bradbeattie··on The laws of shitty dashboards
Important take-away I've found from building monitoring software: find a way to determine what data your users don't care about and de-emphasise or all-out hide it.
bradbeattie··on Ribbon BIN API – Find out how your customers are paying
https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/documents/pci_dss_v2.pd..., PCI DSS 3.3 would seem to be the most applicable section here.
bradbeattie··on Show HN: Never lose a website again
Assuming it completes. I can easily imagine a page with a news ticker that updates once every few seconds.
bradbeattie··on Show HN: Never lose a website again
Moreover, how does this work with sites that make use of ajax content? It'd be frustrating to assume that it's recording just fine, only to later find that patches of your history couldn't be recorded.
bradbeattie··on Guess the Programming Language
"In computing, a polyglot is a computer program or script written in a valid form of multiple programming languages, which performs the same operations or output independent of the programming language used to compile or interpret it." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyglot_(computing)

That might make it even trickier if the answer isn't a set of radio buttons, but checkboxes instead.

bradbeattie··on Global heatmap of cycling and running routes
Interestingly, the same patterns happen in Vancouver when downtown near all the highrises: http://labs.strava.com/heatmap/#16/-123.11986/49.28436/gray/...

The noise may well be indirectly tracking building height. ;)

bradbeattie··on Google+ Head Vic Gundotra Leaving Company
That, and the decision is one-sided. Say I want to post something publicly about some new technology. Do I post it publicly and have it go into my family's feeds where it will be considered akin to spam? What if one of my friends actually _is_ interested in new tech but I don't know it?

I get that it would be an added layer of indirection, but to allow each user to have multiple subject personas for posting and let others subscribe to said personas might have been more useful. As it stands, I err on the side of caution and post privately to the people I can best guess might be interested.

bradbeattie··on Counting Votes Is Hard
Because range voting devolves to approval voting. Why rate a candidate 4/10 if you don't want them to win? You insincerely rate them 0/10. Why rate a candidate 8/10 if you want them to win? You insincerely bump them to 10/10.

On top of that, you then have to consider the potentially lower popularity of your favourite choice against that of the current lead contenders. Do you reduce your vote for the better of two evils so that your sincere preference has a better chance? Ugh.

I'm not trying to suggest tactical voting doesn't exist in other systems, but to suggest that it doesn't in Range voting is either misinformed or disingenuous.

bradbeattie··on iOS holding my phone number hostage = the worst bug I’ve ever experienced
The problem at this point is with the other friends and family who make use of this software. Great, he writes a new implementation of this protocol that prevents _his_ client from improperly caching routing information. This still doesn't fix the problem of the software on other peoples' phones.
