bpick··on Show HN: Eschersket.ch – a symmetry drawing app to design custom wrapping paper
Does anyone have any recommendations for a better, more economically reasonable printing service than Zazzle? The sheer cost of it is prohibitively expensive, and makes it tough to imagine small businesses or artists being able to afford using their service.
bpick··on SiriusXM buys Pandora for $3.5 billion
Pandora spent much more effort attempting to get me to sign-up (and re-sign-up) than they ever did trying to retain me.

The customer service experience was harrowing, featured slow response times, an indifferent attitude to my issues and a wholly inadequate resolution leading me to quit the service.

Every so often I would see news coverage about them struggling and all I could think was, "guess things on the customer service side haven't changed."

bpick··on The New York Times reaches 1M digital only subscribers
Just be ready for them to hike your rate without any type of alert after the initial period expires. This applies even to gifted subscriptions like the one I was given for Christmas. The customer service was...unsympathetic.
bpick··on An inside look behind Romney's loss: An epic failure of its Orca big-data app
Could be more relevant in Colorado and Washington. Just kidding.
bpick··on The Next 1,000 Start-Ups
Not to mention you need an account with them in the first place and Braintree is well known for having a ludicrously strict risk team.

So yes, this is just a marketing gimmick.

bpick··on What I learned today: Never apply for a job
What someone should do is create a site where you can email your resume/letter in and have it attractively handwritten on nice letterhead.

Who's with me?

bpick··on Suggest HN: Hacker news circle on Google+

bpick··on A pulse no longer necessary for life
I posted this yesterday, IMO Npr's write-up is more interesting: http://www.npr.org/2011/06/13/137029208/heart-with-no-beat-o...
bpick··on New Deal for Information Technology
Comparing Nanotech, Education, and future IT to other revolutionary technologies is interesting but nothing radically new. It can be especially difficult to direct money to these new frontiers when the infrastructure of yesterday is becoming increasingly potholed.

Forward into uncertainty as a means of raising our ceiling? Or stand our ground and try to raise the floor?

bpick··on IBM Turns 100
Don't forget that IBM is HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey if you move each letter over one on the alphabet.

bpick··on Ask HN: interested in a SF East Bay HN meetup?
Albany, for the win.
bpick··on German Tank Problem
I recall reading that the same kind of thing used to happen with standing field armies, (think Napoleon sized blocks) where you could almost instantly assess an opponents forces based on simply recognizing divisions, regiments, etc.

My guess is Napoleon-era field marshals did a cost-benefit analysis and decided that managing their forces simplistically (i.e. no irregular sized units) outweighed whatever inconvenience enemy intelligence posed.

Relating this to the OP my guess is the Germans made a mistake and overlooked the serial numbers, rather than simply not caring.

bpick··on [dead]
Your work looks great, I'd love to have you help me out. I don't mind seeing these types of posts on HN, as long as they have the skill to back them up.

Rock on.

bpick··on HN Contractors: Add Yourself
And if I did?
bpick··on HN Contractors: Add Yourself
I am going to go on a hiring spree for all of my ideas. It'll be a knock-down drag-out round robin tournament of start-ups. At the end of each week (month?) we have elimination.

Survivor: Silicon Valley

bpick··on Estimate: 800,000 U.S. Households Abandoned Their TVs For The Web
If you love sports in general you might be out of luck. I love baseball in particular hand have no problem paying the 100 bucks for MLB.tv to watch any (and every) game that I choose, often in high-def, on whatever device I want.

I'm not certain about the other sports, but for baseball there is no real reason to be tied to cable.

bpick··on Ask HN: Why doesn't "Uvote" Startup exist yet?
I love hn. Especially because I do have the resources if you wanted help starting something along these lines.

I'd love to chat if you wanted to talk it over, feel free to email me at nbrendanpickering@gmail.com

bpick··on Ask HN: Why doesn't "Uvote" Startup exist yet?
Call it swingvote and allow people to create profiles that then show you (rough) demographic information.

It would be similar to those espn fangraphs(just more awesome).

bpick··on Ask YC/HN: What's a problem, any problem, you'd like to see someone solve?
Shameless self-promotion disclaimer I have taken baby steps in trying to build a more intelligent classified site at yourgrounds.com

I too feel your pain, and any feedback you have would obviously be incredibly worthwhile - especially if you want to help solve this specific problem.

bpick··on Sexual Reproduction for Same-Sex Couples?
This strikes me as something that could be revolutionary. Specifically, it stirs up memories of sci-fi novels and movies where advanced races have given up sex and sexual reproduction because it's "Too messy."
bpick··on How a Doctor beat Wall Street
The article was good, but the personal life stuff was a waste of time.

The message is clear - don't be afraid to see what others are blind to.

bpick··on U.S. successfully tests airborne laser on missile
WOOT. One step closer to my death star!

Can I get a "may the (us armed) force(s) be with you?"

bpick··on Ask HN: Review our site Aylay.it
Pretty cool site, unfortunately there were some strange side effects from searching.

a. 20% was injected between my words

b. I searched for "Income of women in India" and got the wikipedia entry for the United States.

I like being able to decide which search I want to look at however - very cool.

bpick··on How to become rich even if nobody is following you on Twitter
Damn! Someone already owns Owlvideos.com - I thought it was my ticket to the big time :)
bpick··on Tell HN: My side project, Startup Wiki
Is there a way to lock an entry, like a bio? I could see some grumpy ex-coworkers taking their grumpyness too seriously and defacing entries.

Looks like a fun project!

bpick··on Higher quality ads == Immediate jump in click-through rate
Is there somewhere people can go to look for advertising from the "big guys" rather than Google Adsense?

If not, as long as the CPC were low enough, why wouldn't these big companies embrace it (the long tail)?

bpick··on Ask HN: Review my app - LeagueSmart.com
Looks decent, though obviously it puts the onus on whoever is doing the score-keeping to get notes and stats the the coach who would then put them up there.

What would be incredibly cool is if you created player accounts (for free) where they could sign in, look at their schedule and their stats.

Then the players who want accounts/stats would jump all over their coach to make sure he signed up.

The league view could use a redesign but overall I'd say this was a beyond decent app. Way to go!

bpick··on Weird new forms of money.
The way I see it we've got barter: Something you want for something I want.

And we've got symbolic: Something that represents what we both want (Currency, rewards points, gift cards).

Even those giant stone wheels were a form of currency. What gets weirder than stone coins? Plasma pennies?

bpick··on Do you need a co-founder? (Google Docs list)
Contact info updated. I'm waiting for my cellphone to detonate.
bpick··on Do you need a co-founder? (Google Docs list)
I'm on the investor side of the table in that I have money and would be happy to invest in a worthy start-up. I'm young and fairly inexperienced, but I don't mind being pitched, and I would be happy to share my email address with interested parties.

I think nothing could be more valuable than making funding more accessible to companies that could one day change the world; especially if it could be done well. Maybe we should get to work on this idea...partner. :)
