boyesm··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
In 18 years from now, which company will have employees writing blog posts like this about it?

I hear amazing stories about the early days of Google and I can’t help but think, which engineering company that is in its infancy right now will have employees reminiscing so fondly of the early days? An AI startup?

boyesm··on Airbnb is broken, CEO says – His plans to fix it
The first time I used Airbnb, I stayed on a living room couch in Hull, Québec for $20/night and this old drunk Québecer, the roommate of host, sat in the living room with us until 4am (despite not really being invited) telling us about anything from his experience working in an Albertan sulfur mine at 15, to his favourite local working girls.

Now when I use Airbnb, it costs $80/night and there are no creepy French people to keep me company. So I would definitely agree that Airbnb is broken.

boyesm··on UK businesses caught buying five-star Google reviews
If you could opt-in to change Amazon and other online retailer's customer aggregated reviews to an authoritative nonpartisan review created by a professional product reviewer, would you do it? Why (not)?

boyesm··on Whitehouse.gov Chooses WordPress, Again
Looking through the FAQ on the USDS website that is linked in the source, it seems a lot less bureaucratic than I would've ever anticipated. No job descriptions, no dress code. It seems more like a startup than I would've expected from a government org.

boyesm··on My dad got scammed for $3k worth of gift cards
The font on the sign warning about gift card scams seems pretty small. Given that most of the targets of these sort of scams are people who likely need reading glasses, these signs and the font should be bigger.
boyesm··on My dad got scammed for $3k worth of gift cards
From what I understand, a retail store doesn’t make any profit selling gift cards for other stores.

The Safeway in this story didn’t make any money off of that $2k purchase of Target cards and it could’ve saved/boosted its reputation if it had some better protective measures in place. It also means that maybe people who would’ve spent money at Safeway now can’t because they’ve lost several thousand dollars.

boyesm··on For cops who kill, special Supreme Court protection
I’d argue the US has the best branding of any country in the western world. It promises freedom, and the rewarding of hard work which can be very appealing to people seeking a better life.

However, based off what I see in the media, a lot of these promises are not true for oppressed groups or for people in certain areas. Like the use of excessive force by police officers. It seems like this all comes back to fundamental issues in the way some Americans think (that certain people are better than others).

My question is, is there a way to correct these fundamental issues such as racism (or more generally ignorance)?
