boyce··on Why are people modding Thomas the Tank Engine into video games?
My toddler asks to watch that one most days and it is just horrible! Especially when the episode ends with Ringo saying "I think he deserves his punishment, don't you?"
boyce··on O2 outage: 31m mobile customers unable to get online
Yup. 2006-2012, still live in Highfield.
boyce··on O2 outage: 31m mobile customers unable to get online
I thought initially it was a local thing like when Vodafone disappeared here because a falcon made a nest on the transmitter
boyce··on Taiwanese grandpa plays Pokémon Go with 11 phones
Yeah, completely crazy the lengths some players go to. People travel a long way for events or to exchange keys to make big links and fields. More of a trot around the park thing for me (and the occasional pub meetup)
boyce··on Girl Scouts file trademark lawsuit as Boy Scouts plan to rename to Scouts BSA
That's odd to read. The scouts are very different in the UK. They have an explicit "Open to all" policy. I know several scout leaders who are gay, plenty who are women, and I believe they've removed the mention of god from the pledge.
boyce··on Taiwanese grandpa plays Pokémon Go with 11 phones
Never played Pokemon Go but in Ingress I'm pretty sure playing with multiple accounts (and devices) was a bannable offense.

I did meet a guy who carried a ridiculous amount of gear for playing. Batteries, portable wifi modules for group meets, antennae. Sims for every network in case signal was unavailable for some. Satelite phone for when there was none.

boyce··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
Wife and I use the Kore app. Less likely to forget where my phone is than a dedicated remote. Handy to have the youtube plugin and share a video to kodi from that app too.
boyce··on So You Want to Open a Small Press Bookstore/Artist-Run Space? A Cautionary Tale
Tried to combine running a craft beer retailer with some remote programming work for a while. Struggled with it as customers always appear at the wrong moment and switching between brain modes was weird and didn't help me concentrate when there was peace later
boyce··on The gradual decline of the fade-out in popular music (2014)
To be fair I'd take that (and similar fades on DS1/2) over Homme's obsession with false endings from Sky Valley onwards
boyce··on Mastodon Is Better Than Twitter: Elevator Pitch
It's rare to outright block an instance (for not moderating child porn or something of course but not otherwise really)

Instead most "blocks" are just muting from the federated timeline, precisely so that you're not cut off from contacts.

boyce··on Mastodon Is Better Than Twitter: Elevator Pitch
You can mark an account as having moved and specify to where.
boyce··on Mastodon Is Better Than Twitter: Elevator Pitch
I thought we were comparing Mastodon to Twitter where what you say is already the case

Moving instances is not a big deal and yes, know your admin.

boyce··on Mastodon Is Better Than Twitter: Elevator Pitch
It's a nice place to be

No one has to care about which pair of celebs are arguing

No bloody advertising

People are building interesting stuff with it

Third party apps work

It's not run by a guy seemingly at war with his own users

edit: more

Your parents aren't there

The people who left twitter years ago because of all the harassment and you've been missing are probably already there

If you've got a feature request or something, you can just toot Gargron and you will get a reply

boyce··on Mastodon Is Better Than Twitter: Elevator Pitch
Probably blackjack somewhere too
boyce··on 1/0 = 0
So if 1·d = 0·c, write 1 in terms of the other elements and then evaluate.
boyce··on How Not to Negotiate a $6.1B Deal
Sounds like pg has never owned or run a restaurant. Producing good food is much riskier than producing microwaved slop.
boyce··on Mastodon 2.4.0
The way I'd do it is set up a bot account that toots your twitter timeline, make it a locked account and only approve your mastodon account, make your replies to your mastodon bot then be tweeted from your twitter account. Build your own bridge, heh
boyce··on Mastodon 2.4.0
You can export and import your follows. Yes it would be a different account. There is an option to mark your old account as "account has moved" and specify where you've gone, which an app could treat as a redirect.
boyce··on Ask HN: What's one book that changed your life?
Particularly Ford in the third book then, huh?
boyce··on PayPal buys credit card reader startup iZettle for $2.2B
Seen plenty of iZettle devices in the UK lately. Mainly new retail businesses and cafes.
boyce··on It's time to head back to RSS?
I love how the term podcasting outlived dedicated personal music devices. For me it's testament to how solid the idea was.

Guess "box sets" is also doing that now everyone streams TV series.

boyce··on De-Google-ify Internet
and not fresh to order
boyce··on Ask HN: I'm writing a book about white-collar drug use, including tech sector
You have, they just haven't told you about it and you haven't spotted it.
boyce··on You thought quantum mechanics was weird: check out entangled time
Precisely! This has been pretty extensively tested - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_test_experiments - and is true even at distances and within timescales where a photon couldn't travel between the two entangled particles (i.e. to send that information)
boyce··on You thought quantum mechanics was weird: check out entangled time
The difference is that the same experiment in quantum terms would have you look at the ball through a colour filter and determine the probability of a range of possibilities (and therefore the other ball wherever it is) but then seeing the statistics show the particular filter you choose changes the probability of what colour ball you have and therefore the distant ball also
boyce··on You thought quantum mechanics was weird: check out entangled time
Not just in theory! Isn't this what Alain Aspect tested?
boyce··on Solving Minesweeper and making it better (2015)
Love it when two such unrelated things are the same person. Like the antivirus guy Graham Cluley who wrote a tetris clone with a spreadsheet program built in I got obsessed with as a kid
boyce··on The Trouble with Mindfulness Apps (2016)
The pirate bay?
boyce··on Carphone Warehouse fined after failures put customer and employee data at risk
"Who are you and why do you keep calling my daughter" tends to work for me
boyce··on Ask HN: My company plans an ICO despite my opposition as CTO, any advice?
I think this comment is the best advice here. You're young. You know a lot but have relatively little sway. Learn from this. There'll be a next time.
