boxcardavin··on Hunting Task Wabbits
If the article is implying that taskers and buyers were happier users under the old system, what was it about that system that made it hard to scale?
boxcardavin··on Show HN: Premium Medical Marijuana Subscription – SF Only
Scaling plans?
boxcardavin··on Woz’s take on the Apple 1’s noisy -5 volt supply
Woz is such a cool guy, he reminds a lot of startup guys of how much pure fun tech was when you were 8-15yrs old and not thinking about money.
boxcardavin··on Fix a Parking Ticket? There's an App for That
I've been on the numbered waitlist for Seattle for 6 months or so, it hasn't budged. Meh.
boxcardavin··on SpaceshipTwo crashes shortly after Mojave test flight
This highlights how important crew escape systems are. The issue isn't just crew survival, but also the effect that loss of crew has on the program. If crew loss is a real danger, it will happen, and after it does the PR often kills the public will to press on.
boxcardavin··on Ask HN: How do you manage business contacts?
Maybe I'll revise what I said, this does look useful and easy.
boxcardavin··on Ask HN: How do you manage business contacts?
CRM for customers, searchable communications (text, google apps) and social media for biz contacts. Formal tracking is time consuming when I can just search for the person and review what we've talked about. I keep hashtagged notes all over the place (in emails, Slack, Trello) that I can search if I need to, but I rarely do. Being scientific about tracking interactions seems less important to me than being able to read the social queues I'm getting that day.
boxcardavin··on Ask HN: How do you manage business contacts?
I keep customers and business contacts separate, both in my head as well as digitally. There are too many biz people to meet and you'll either go crazy trying to keep up, or it will just be a time consuming 'hobby' cataloguing all of your interactions. Those relationships are like friendships -- If you don't see someone and talk to them enough to know what's going on with them, then they aren't good contacts. Yet.

Negative!
boxcardavin··on Bitcoin mining is NP-hard
Maybe I misunderstood, does "minimum" in this case mean that fees must be "at least ฿X"? So wouldn't a fee minimum enforce a higher drag on the BC economy?

I will also google this question down later.

boxcardavin··on Low Light and High Dynamic Range photography in the Google Camera App
Would this be the end user doing that? Although you can't raw out of an iPhone it's not one-size-fits-all, I'd say it's the opposite as they have tuned the processing for that exact sensor/lens combination after testing.

To be clear, I would LOVE to get raw out of an iOS device camera. It would make motion analysis much more precise. With iOS 8 you have kinda/sorta control over the exposure time, but it could be more precise.

boxcardavin··on Low Light and High Dynamic Range photography in the Google Camera App
You get called dark current (thermal noise) on CMOS and CCD sensors, and the signal-to-noise ratio goes down as you decrease the exposure time. You see the effect when taking a low light photo, the graininess is from the SNR being very low while the noise is showing through. You can smooth this out quite a bit by combining burst photos (see Cortex Camera app) as the noise is random, but you always get better results with more light for each exposure.
boxcardavin··on Bitcoin mining is NP-hard
"but this formula has other benefits as it enforces minimum transaction fee amounts"

Why is this good/important?

boxcardavin··on Apple's app store rankings are all messed up
Can anyone confirm this in the UK? Also, if you're in the UK I am envious of your access to the BBC iPlayer and its ability to work as your alarm clock.
boxcardavin··on Ask HN: Have founders spoken about disabilities affecting business interactions?
Yes, that works well with short sleeve shirts, I have a BOA brace that I use for watersports. You'd be surprised how many folks will give a hearty handshake to someone wearing a cast, though. http://goo.gl/zeT40x
boxcardavin··on Low Light and High Dynamic Range photography in the Google Camera App
One should remember that writing camera software that is agnostic to the hardware is technically hard, and nearly impossible if you want gorgeous photos (a la iPhone). When taking astronomy images we would characterize the CCD (mostly for noise) each night, and you need that kind of approach to tune your software to your hardware.
boxcardavin··on iMac with Retina 5K display
I'm most impressed that they can manufacture 15 million pixels on a single panel without a single dead pixel. They must be wasting/repurposing a ton of panel square footage when cutting.
boxcardavin··on The Space Shuttle’s Controversial Launch Abort Plan
I wrote a paper while I was doing my phys/astro degree on why the shuttle was bad for the US space program. This was a major reason for it because every accident was guaranteed death for the astronauts, which then guaranteed a shutdown of all manned launches for months. NASA has been cash-strapped since the 70s but they can still absorb and recover from lost rockets (with astronauts ejected vertically), whereas lost life leaves a scar on the organization.
boxcardavin··on Amazon Fire Phone
No no, watching where your eyes are looking on the screen itself. Where the dart to on a website or shopping app.
boxcardavin··on Amazon Fire Phone
The trojan feature for Amazon is the eye-tracking. Tracking a user's gaze while they are shopping is the ultimate way to increase sales, and this extends to eye-tracking while a user is browsing. I imagine that even Google would want the information that Amazon is going to generate.
boxcardavin··on I Sold My Startup for $25.5 Million
If we exit I plan on telling as few people as possible, why did you want to directly announce to a bunch of people that you now have more money than them?
