Why not just allow it to be open source.
boulderdash··on Why C++ for Unreal 4
Hi srean - thanks for that recap. I just did some more digging on this and tried to understand the assembly versions of coroutines. They were very spartan. It was just: POP the next address from the stack into TEMP, PUSH the current PC, then set the PC to TEMP. Notice that there isn't any linking or parameter passing.

Overall, it has been fun reading on all the variants of this idea.

side note: in my first job, there were a few PDP-11s in the lab that I was responsible for. We never turned them on though.

Also, the PDP 10, which you mention above, was one of the most revered machines by hackers.

@srean - can you provide a link to the PDP support for coroutines? I would like to read more.

Thanks for sharing that link.

I have seen James tutorial a while back, and I agree. He does a great job.

If anybody is doing this, let me share some words of advice based on experience.

Please use a virtual machine instead of doing this on your primary machine. You eliminate the risk of messing up your machine. Also, if you setup the VM properly, you get a debugger.

Thanks for sharing this. This is what Eugene Jarvis did to make Defender fast. It was a common tool in the toolbox for any clever game programmer for the 6809. I think it is awesome that Tom & buddy to experience the pleasure of its rediscovery.

guess what, in the bay area, connectivity up is generally even worse than that. For all the amazing internet companies here, the infrastructure for the public is pretty bad.

scaling twitter is easy. it is getting the users that is hard. I can say this because I was part of a service in 1999 that had more users and volume (bytes/hits/etc.) yet didn't have nearly the same issues.
boulderdash··on Code icebergs
That was an old typewriter convention. I learned typing on a typewriter in highshool. Wordprocessors in the 80's eliminated that convention. They would automatically perform the proper spacing.

so the 'almost all' in my above is wrong? you basically said what I said, but with your favorite smalltalk GC.

actually, in this day and age... if you hit disk for paging/swap on a production server... "you are doing it wrong"... this should not be an issue

When I read stuff like this, I should go... Yay, they are back on the path. However, I'm stuck on the... why are they even off the path in the first place? Why should rediscovery of processes and the 'select' call be news?

... I should just write a big blog post about this ... (which I'll never do... to busy working :-)

so axod - which sites were you rocking since 99? :-)

It is not a large number, and they do have a lot of inventory. The ads are just not as effective. Also, 3rd parties (aka you and me) do not get these ads, nor would we get the great pricing that google does.

So, to be clear, this is the fringe.

boulderdash··on Mibbit (axod's startup) video featured on Google Code Blog
Well, I don't have the exact numbers... but the main message was that the revenue in comparison to other ad channels was insignificant (!).
boulderdash··on Mibbit (axod's startup) video featured on Google Code Blog
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I know about the GMail ads from Google's internal point of view. They wish they were as lucrative as you think.

Ah - twitter raised $30+ million.. Is that is what you mean by larger problems :-)

Regarding CPC. People have to buy something is the VAST majority of the txt ad market. There is near ZERO brand awareness in that market. If an advertiser is buying txt ads on IRC and hoping for conversion, I would be really, really surprised that they re-buy. (aka - you are getting filled by a network)

Your example text tells me how you are really getting revenue. You are using context for affiliate deals. That actually might be viable.

Re: since 1999... cool, what sites were you involved with before?

boulderdash··on Mibbit (axod's startup) video featured on Google Code Blog
Hi - text ads are about end user conversion. Otherwise it is just click fraud. People clicking have to buy something in the end. I have a hard time believing that IRC channels have a good enough conversion to pay for bandwidth and salaries.

I'm seeing that this is a longer conversation, but consider this simple example. Facebook ad rates have dropped significantly from their early days. When people are communicating in an application (which is all Facebook really is), they are not in the mood to buy/convert. So, if you are receiving income, great, but I doubt it will be sustainable. Take a look at the ads you get and see if you get re-buys.

Anyways, please don't take this as harsh. This is probably one of the hardest problems for a publisher to solve. Twitter is just trying to figure it out right now.
