My basic setup was vim/emacs (only as text editors) + grep/sed. It is totally doable and it is possible to be really productive but makes no sense when you have actually tried out adding some integrated tooling to your editor.

Depends on the company (and country). At least here in Stockholm (SE) take home coding assignments and/or whiteboard problem solving seems pretty common for both junior and senior positions.

Stockholm, Sweden. Good tech scene, bad housing, but very family friendly (heavily subsidized kindergarten, free schools, paid parental leave, etc.).

Sign with the other company then resign from the first. This is not uncommon. How ever do it now before starting and taking any relocation assistance from the first company.

There are fully automated trains. However full automation requires not just a capable "train cockpit" but also a capable signal system (with supporting auxiliary systems). Introducing the latter is, as far as I can tell, the hard/expensive part.

As a note, not all trains have fixed speeds or fixed stops. As an example some signal systems may allow a train to enter a section where another train is already present if the driver drives slow enough to be able to stop before colliding.

Why not get a degree in computer science or software engineering if you plan on spending a couple of years full-time learning? Projects often include implementing an OS and a compiler.

Python is slow. Sometimes this matters (pypy can improve speed in many but not all cases).
