bot403··on I Want You to Understand Chicago
Huh. The solution is to round up the "slaves" at gunpoint by secret police then?

I would think we should go after those employing the "slaves" then. No one ever talks about that.

bot403··on The traffickers are winning the war on drugs
Tarrifs?
bot403··on Leading computer science professor says 'everybody' is struggling to get jobs
You have to look harder. It's not always explicit as OP says with threats of deportation. Rather there's a huge power imbalance.

Who can we ask to stay late? Who "doesn't mind" 12 hour days? Who "doesn't mind' being on call. Who won't mind if they get a smaller bonus or raise? How about Sandeep who is afraid to say no because if he says no too many times and loses his job him and his entire family have to move back overseas with minimal notice?

That's how real exploitation happens these days. And sometimes even good managers don't realize they're doing it, because, after all, poor Sandeep even said he didn't mind! He's just a really hard worker!

bot403··on React hook causes downtime at Cloudflare, which just stopped the biggest DDoS
Tomorrow's headline: react use effect hook leads to new, largest npm supply chain attack.
bot403··on How big a solar battery do I need to store all my home's electricity?
Did you take into account that lead acid batteries are recommended to only be discharged to 50% especially when used for solar ? If not thats now 2200 batteries and $200-$400K.
bot403··on Cloud Storage Is Full Email Scam: What It Is and How to Protect Yourself
Yeah the only time I felt proud to only read the article title instead of 16 paragraphs and a table of contents on a new kind of spam email.

Yes I get it. The hook is constantly changing. I'm glad you let me know the new one. That's all I need.

bot403··on How the Richest People in America Avoid Paying Taxes
Are you implying a wealth tax stunts GDP? I'd love to see some evidence and thought behind that implication rather than a cheeky quip.
bot403··on Exploring the tragedy of the Counter-Strike 2 server browser
Hm thanks for the meta-discussion. I thought I was missing a "reply notification" setting somewhere and was meaning to go search for enabling it one day.
bot403··on Exploring the tragedy of the Counter-Strike 2 server browser
Ai has gone sentient now but just plays video games. And it doesn't want to play with a slow-moving slow-reacting human. It prefers to play against other bots.
bot403··on A bug saved the company
I like your line of reasoning and you may be right. But as a user I'll probably try a few of the free trial competitors to see if they do what I want before I put money down. I don't always trust front line customer service and the returns process. Sure, maybe you are the good developer who makes it instant and easy. But maybe you're not and either employ dark patterns to keep me in place or don't respond to me at all to return my money. Then I have to consider if the cc charge back process is worth my time and hassle.
bot403··on Car has more than 1.2M km on it – and it's still going strong
Fun fact, on average most (not all though) of the cells in your body are brand new after 7 years. When do you stop being you and take a new name?
bot403··on I dumped Google for Kagi
Oh goodness no.

Please delete your comment before a Google product manager reads it and puts it on their idea board.

bot403··on I dumped Google for Kagi
Years ago Google used to have a feature of blacklisting sites from your results. Go figure, they removed it.

I made the switch to kagi because there was so much ai slop and stack overflow copy sites in my Google results. Sometimes I would hit three or four cheap clone sites of the same stack overflow answer trying to get my answer. Now I'm super happy with Kagi.

bot403··on Germany's identity crisis: The trains no longer run on time
I wish the author would dive into that even a little bit. It looks like COVID killed the performance. Why? And what about post COVID?
bot403··on Compressing Icelandic name declension patterns into a 3.27 kB trie
If this isn't compliant than neither are name day calendars or baby name websites.

It's not a privacy issue if it's just "someone's" name.

bot403··on We have made the decision to not continue paying for BBB accreditation
You don't even need to be a member. Just walk in, show your driver's license, pay $20 or so and walk out with your international drivers permit.
bot403··on The current hype around autonomous agents, and what actually works in production
Maybe you're on to something. We need AI lions which will eat the models which don't learn or adapt enough.
bot403··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
Wow me too. This was very confusing and annoying as my wife's cheap dock would take down the network while we were both working from home. It took several annoying incidents before we connected the incidents to the dock.
bot403··on putty.org is not run by the PuTTY developers
I've seen the putty.org site. It's about the most friendly it could be to putting putty at top and disclaiming association.

The reporter was an unbearable asshole. They were not reporting but pushing and agenda through questions. They were definitely jaq-ing off and trying to push their own view that holding putty.org is unethical. I fail to see what research the so-called "journalist" was conducting.

I applauded Denis. There was no correct answer that could have been given here. The "journalist" just wanted a quote to attach to an article which was already written in their mind about how the site was unethical and "stealing" putty.org.

bot403··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
I like your friend's rule. If a guy literally runs every day, through stress fractures, flu, winter snow, thunderstorms, etc, I'm going to cut him a break on an international flight and continue to celebrate his streak with him.
bot403··on Black hole merger challenges our understanding of black hole formation
I'll underscore your awe by reminding you those solar masses disappeared in only 1 tenth of a second - the length of the gravitational wave signal.
bot403··on Solar power has begun to transform the world’s energy system
I can't see how this could be true. Many people will need to drive the ev to work during the day, and if you discharge it at night then when are you really charging?

It may be true for some who WFH often or in some cases, but not enough EVs will be able to discharge overnight for a v2g battery revolution.

bot403··on How to Leave the House
I can tell you stopped reading halfway through or you would have said the first third is about dogs, second third about sidewalks, and the last third is about bikes.

And the conclusion is about a falafel.

bot403··on Techie went home rather than fix mistake that caused a meltdown
Clickbait headline. The mistake was a configuration issue in alerts that didn't matter at all that he spotted right away but intended to fix later.

Even the second mistake by the electrical contractor didn't result in any damages.

No meltdowns here. Just a funny coincidence.

bot403··on World fertility rates in 'unprecedented decline', UN says
Financial markets are fueled by growth. Growth in real terms (not merely inflation) requires increases in GDP which requires real output by people at it's core.

I'd be worried about expected financial growth of any retirement fund over the long term if population is flat or declining.

bot403··on A coherent European/non-US cloud strategy
The gem of a point here is that a solid set of core services can go a very long way. You don't need to emulate beanstalk, sagemaker, lightsail, appsync and the like.

What you need is CloudFront, vpc, ec2, albs, RDS, S3, ecs, and other base services and many businesses can build a lot of great things.

bot403··on Duolingo will replace contract workers with AI
On the other hand, the plant is an amazing salesman.
bot403··on Why Sedans Disappeared
The author makes the assertion that the mpg targets are easier and it's implied it's because the number is lower.

I'd like to see that assertion actually supported with evidence.

Making a heavier car, with higher ground clearance, and a less aerodynamic shape (squared rear) means it will get less mpg by default.

So what makes it easier to hit the mpg target vs a sedan?

bot403··on Technicalities of Homeworld 2 Backgrounds
Thanks for sharing this amazing bit. I love the "our team has found out..." At the end.

Like....who is the 12 year olds team?

bot403··on Linux laptop maker called me a Zombie
What a wild ride just a few comments in. Now we know why "Reddit users" are banned from the company. I may just be another rando internet zombie but reading that thread made me feel so alive!
