bosswipe··on EU law mandating universal chargers for devices comes into force
I worry about the durability of USB C ports. I have 4 laptops >5 years old with loose USB C ports, Apple and HP brands, and yes i have cleaned them looking for lint. I don't know if it's these specific laptops or if the port is designed for obsolescence.
bosswipe··on A closer look at child marriage in California (2021)
"child marriage is still legal in 44 states in the United States"

"child marriage is more common in the southern United States"

Because there's a concerted right-wing effort to elevate any negative news about California.

bosswipe··on Framework Ethernet Expansion Card is now available
A better design for ethernet on thin laptops is a hinge that expands when the cable is plugged in: https://1.img-dpreview.com/files/p/TS560x560~forums/59371721...
bosswipe··on Woman sues after DNA from rape kit used to arrest her
There's also the issue that the more justice-minded SF DA was recently kicked out and an aggressive pro-police DA installed.
bosswipe··on The Follower: Using open cameras and AI to find how an Instagram photo is taken
Why is it creepy? The influencers already publicly posted their location and photo.
bosswipe··on Oberlin College to pay $36M to bakery owners who were falsely accused of racism
I don't feel too bad for them and their $36 mill.
bosswipe··on Oberlin College to pay $36M to bakery owners who were falsely accused of racism
The type of hot-button political grievances that make it to the HN front page are an indication of the demographics here.
bosswipe··on Companies are buying large numbers of carbon offsets that don’t cut emissions
But the politics suck so it'll never happen.
bosswipe··on Patreon laid off their security team
Patreon is kind of known for sudden unexpected mass layoffs unrelated to their financials. Previous to this I know of it happening twice.
bosswipe··on San Francisco decriminalizes psychedelics
Already happened across the bay in Oakland. Unfortunately Oakland police is so dysfunctional that it's impossible to know if decriminalization has caused any change in problematic public behaviors.
bosswipe··on Riding in a peloton is the most energy efficient locomotion – research (2018)
Why would you need a supercomputer to figure this out instead of putting simple sensors on the bikes in a peloton?
bosswipe··on Useful engineering metrics and why velocity is not one of them
Yuck, I'd quit your team. That level of micromanagement is demoralizing and it hurts the company. "Sorry support, I have zero autonomy. I can't talk to you unless my manager adjusts some number in some spreadsheet"
bosswipe··on Kiwi Farms is down across all domains as DDoS-Guard terminates service
The web is only 20 or so years old so these online speech issues are new.
bosswipe··on EV adoption in US is happening faster than predicted
As a long time daily biker I don't understand the trend of heftier more powerful ebikes. Instead of bulking a bike up to me it makes more sense to slim cars down.

I've been trying to find tiny electric two seater cars, but I've been disappointed in the lack of anything in the US, they're more available in europe and Japan.

Actually now that I typed this comment out I think I understand the trend of heftier ebikes, it's a way to skirt the regulations around making a "street legal" vehicle, which is what prevents any innovation in the <$10k tiny car segment.

bosswipe··on My Contribution to Markdown
If Gruber had gotten behind that initiative it probably would've worked but he was weirdly antagonistic to it.
bosswipe··on Why are Pakistan’s floods so extreme this year?
Here's what the temperature anomaly looks like for "the whole globe" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haBG2IIbwbA
bosswipe··on US puts NSO Group on trade blacklist
Oh thanks for the Biden mention. I was confused by your convoluted yet harsh complaint about the US for this action, but now I see it was more of a partisan thing.
bosswipe··on Lockdown, distance learning likely to increase social class achievement gap
Wow. As a more left-wing person I've been shadow banned on HN for much less than this. HN used to be one of the few places where intelligent debate accros political spectrum was allowed. If you look at this whole comment thread all you see is one POV.
bosswipe··on “My scooter was stolen. Unknown to the thief, I hid two AirTags inside it.”
What they don't have is the necessary internet connection unless you're willing to pay a cell phone bill just for that purpose.
bosswipe··on France fines Google €500M over copyright row
Why not stop showing news snippets?
bosswipe··on Non Session Manager vs New Session Manager
How can you trust the mailing lost when the accused are the heavy-handed moderators of that list?
bosswipe··on EU draft exempts private jets, cargo from jet fuel tax
Yes it's extremely unfair that the West used up what turned out to be the planet's entire carbon budget. But it doesn't change the fact that humanity has to stop emitting carbon.
bosswipe··on Twitter begins hiring to comply with India’s new rules
Who determines that their is "clear evidence". Shouldn't a judge be involved?
bosswipe··on Twitter begins hiring to comply with India’s new rules
Be careful what you say or Modi will demand that Hacker News hire a local Indian censor.
bosswipe··on Twitter begins hiring to comply with India’s new rules
When Trump was trying to ban Chinese TikTok because he didn't like the young users making fun of him I supported TikTok.

You have to realize that your government uses anti-American feelings to push their propaganda.

A lot of Indians trust Twitter more than Modi, especially non-Hindus.

bosswipe··on Social Media Platforms as Common Carriers? [pdf]
So many supposedly principled free-market libertarians and conservatives tying themselves in knots so that Trump can continue to push his lies. The american conservative movement, like nationalists everywhere, have no principles bedsides power. And with the new permanent conservative judiciary there are many victories in their future. Our democracy is in peril but if you look at places like Russia and China they seem stable enough, maybe the death of the American world order won't be so bad.
bosswipe··on Twitter has lost liability protection in India, government says
My personal anecdote is more proof than what BuyMyBitcoins provided for his assertion.
bosswipe··on Twitter has lost liability protection in India, government says
I don't think your story about Twitter banning skepticism about surface cleaning is true. I remember being involved in several long Twitter threads on that topic with no one being banned.
bosswipe··on Judge tears Florida’s social media law to shreds for violating First Amendment
Ron Desantis rules by virtue signalling, it doesn't matter if the law is effective as long as it angers liberals and pleases conservatives.
