borism··on Norway: an Eden with wifi
What are the Norwegian govt plans for the long-time future when their oil is over?

second largest sovereign fund in the world: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_wealth_fund#Largest_s...

plus all the investments into its' own people like mentioned in the article.

(it's long for that, i know).

not at all, Norway's oil is pretty much gone http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-03/norway-drillers-hit...

What about other oil-prosperous small countries such as the Emirates or Kuwait? Are the cases comparables?

Totally different. You know, in UAE they build skyscrapers just because they can. In Manhattan they built skyscrapers because there was no more land available to build on...

Norway is probably only country in the world that was able to dodge Dutch disease.

borism··on Financial Times Hits 1M Users On HTML5 Site That Dodges Apple’s Tax
Anyone who subscribes to the FT can attest to just how great their ipad site is.

I thought it was HTML5 site?

borism··on Google Maps Mystery Actually Spy Satellite Targets
it's 300+ km above you and passes at ~10km/s. how much more health risk does it pose than your neighborhood cellular tower or even your home wifi box for that matter?

not to mention that there are definitely more than 1 radar in 300km radius of you than this.

borism··on 1TB Hard Drive Prices up 180% in a Month
I wouldn't think getting HD-making-factories flooded is such a good thing for HD-manufacturers.

I'll be the other side of this trade.

borism··on SimpleGeo To Be Acquired By Urban Airship
well then we wouldn't be talking about acquisition but a team change, would we?
borism··on SimpleGeo To Be Acquired By Urban Airship
The acquiring company causes the liquidity pref to vanish regardless of the currency, if they're sensible.

huh? and how exactly would they do that in a legal way?

borism··on Dave Winer: Why I stand up for Stallman
Can you? Is it possible to be friends with someone who says that anyone who disagrees with his ideas is evil?

Yes. Depends on definition of evil, I guess.

P.S. in Stallman case I guess definition of evil goes something like this: "I think with your rules you're doing harm to long term development of intellectual property like software. You're evil and you will burn in hell." Pretty mild definition of evil in my opinion?

borism··on Utopia Is Creepy
As you have correctly noted, there is NO below-class in this vision (well maybe except hotel concierge).

We may only imagine how we might arrive to such future.

borism··on Why we think there's a Multiverse, not just our Universe
Why would time be of any value if nobody is ageing after 25?
borism··on Why we think there's a Multiverse, not just our Universe
* for a similar enough definition of heaven, hell and multiverse.

Have you read the article?

borism··on The Hubble Blew My Mind
People have mentioned a lot of great apps here for both Android and iOS.

What they forget is that all those apps get their information from somewhere and a lot of it is coming from hobbyists and amateur astronomers putting it up on http://www.heavens-above.com and SeeSat mailing list for free (yes, a lot of space-celebs like Hubble and ISS have a known orbit, but those guys have catalogued virtually every object launched by humans, including many top-secret satellites).

Just thought it is appropriate to give respect where respect is due.

borism··on Kurzweil's rebuttal to Paul Allen
Newer thin-film solar panels represent a jump in paradigm

isn't this what Allen said in his critique? scientific achievement doesn't just grow exponentially - there are those "jumps in paradigm" that move us forward, but they're relatively rare and unpredictable.

Haven't heard about Warren Mossler before, but yeah, he does seem pretty important figure in MMT circles.

But this so called refutation seems to be totally missing the point. No wonder - it's coming from Austrian. This is like asking Aristotelian about General Relativity. They're Universe apart.

borism··on Biographer: Jobs refused early and potentially life-saving surgery
You might find a higher sticker price on a Mac, but it is a pretty safe assumption that the added cost is to get you into OS X. Which just so happens to be the only reason why you would consider purchasing a Mac in the first place.

You might find a higher sticker price on a Gucci, but it is a pretty safe assumption that the added cost is to get you into Gucci. Which just so happens to be the only reason why you would consider purchasing a Gucci in the first place.

People just compare any junk say Dell with the same hardware specs (memory, processor, disk, chipset, etc) to a MBP.

you prove my point. To you computer isn't just a piece of commodity. It IS a status symbol, a thing to revere.

I guess it is the same to me since I write this from my MBP.

borism··on What If We Paid Off The Debt? The Secret Government Report
For example, why hasn't China invaded the USA yet? Perhaps they are waiting until they get their ~$4T back! :)

theoretically it is fairly easy to repay those $4T. you would need some large container ship to transport all of them back to China, but a lot of those go back over Pacific fairly empty anyway.

Province is not a country - they don't issue their own currency. Comparing Alberta's AAA to US or whatever sovereign AAA is nonsense.
borism··on What If We Paid Off The Debt? The Secret Government Report
I always get dizzy when I try to understand the monetary system. It seems insane. It really shouldn't work at all.

you use wrong/incomplete models to describe it (incidentally so do policymakers).

try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Monetary_Theory for starters.

borism··on What If We Paid Off The Debt? The Secret Government Report
US Dollars = US Treasury Bonds.

they are freely interchangeable!

money IS debt!

guess what, country is no private citizen. it isn't even a family or a company, so pictures like this are deeply flawed:

borism··on Why FSF Founder Richard Stallman is Wrong on Steve Jobs
free software isn't a religious movement like Stallman would like it to be.

it's just a social concept (one of many) of how we humans should organise our interactions with regards to software.

I believe it's an useful concept and probably so do you. For god's sake, we don't need a spokesperson!
