boopmaster··on Bolt announces layoffs
There are stories across the industry like this. "My first day at facebook I was laid off." etc.

Perhaps the feds inducing a hiring freeze is _working as designed_ :

boopmaster··on The domain for the Python Requests library is expired
hopefully it’s more enjoyment than you’ve derived by frolicking around in his creative outputs before tossing out hot takes about his personal life.

boopmaster··on Why do USB-C hubs still have USB 2.0 ports? (2021)
I can appreciate the presence of USB 2.0 as I have experienced issues with RF/noise on USB 3.

Wireless headphones… wireless mice… so yeah all 2.4ghz transceivers basically… lossy garbage connections have me tracing down old USB 2.0 ports on my PCs still today.

boopmaster··on I'm a fucking webmaster (2016)
snot-nosed 90s kids? I resemble that remark!

I do feel like HN still gives off better vibes from the better days when the netizens had netiquette, when the information superhighway beckoned to the explorer, before the undying flame wars…

boopmaster··on Moving a macOS window by clicking anywhere on it
A number of the other comments explain how to configure the UI to allow for similar functionality; e.g… with 3 finger drag.

I found the article to be a little odd… awing at 3rd party apps basically replicating baked in features.

Although to be fair I am super meticulous in going through the accessibility and gesture features to get the UI feel just right for my tastes. MacOS, to me, feels like a clunker out of the box.

boopmaster··on How to Corrupt an SQLite Database File
I definitely prefer the pronunciation that sounds like a sugar-free beverage additive. "This Java tastes like Rust, would you parse me sum see'kwel-ite?"
boopmaster··on Pet Airways
Oh, wow... was really not expecting "toddlers". Those descriptions of otherwise unpredictably acting humans is not restricted to merely the toddler aged humans.
boopmaster··on Ask HN: Am I going insane or is there genuinely no value in blockchain tech?
The latest trillion $peso$ spending "package" has less of a direct impact on $globalrupee$. Hurricane $Chucky$ in $greentown$ does not as directly impact the $globalrupee$. If that is starting to sound more like an insurance policy, and less like a bunch of tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists talking about "muh freedoms", well maybe that's because it is.

and you still can:

someone at Nvidia must be a FreeBSD stalwart and I’m okay with that

The interesting part to me is the mental gymnastics and tests around what constitutes "lewd or lascivious" without nudity, and naturally that veers well into: "I know it when I see it". To paraphrase: "The editorial direction in this video is terrible and punishable as crimes." But also what a gross rabbit hole to go down. I am so sad that I clicked the link and wondered what this case might be about.
boopmaster··on Collectibles are terrible investments
I wish I had bought more dual lands in the early 00s, when I started getting back into the game. I snagged a few volcanic Islands for $35 each, and Underground Sea was around $50 on eBay at the time. I thought it was "a lot of money" (and to be fair 2 me at the time it was a lot!) What are those now, $700 to $900?

But yeah, like the article says: Taking care of things is hard! Which is why I store that kind of thing in a plastic bin so that even if the roof sprung a leak I'm not totally screwed.

I don't own enough to warrant a fireproof safe, at least not yet :-P

boopmaster··on The computers used to do 3D animation for Final Fantasy VII in 1996
I could say "I'm not that old" but I guess that's subjective, since the article says this is archeology.

I think it's been said elsewhere, but those entry level SGI boxes were around $25,000 in the mid 90s (and oh boy did I ever drool over those things back then).

I made out alright, with some friends on IRC having mailed me warez CDs, from their tiny middle-American town in Iowa to my depressed backwoods in WV... precious gold discs arrived loaded with wintel based 3D modeling and DAW software.

That's awesome that your passion became your paycheck.
boopmaster··on Today Google is turning on tracking for many users that previously turned it off
Google’s most disruptive products like search and mail are over 20 years old now.

Google moved on from its values of by-nerds-for-nerds and ethos of do no evil.

I’m not the same person I was 20 years ago either.

I upped my standards so up yours: screw yougle.

Uninstall that spyware trash and move on.

Edit: Google search itself is highly invasive nowadays. Try using it behind a VPN or in private browsing mode. It’s not accessible unless you agree to let Google raid your cookie jar.

boopmaster··on Apple Studio Display Contains 64GB of Storage, but Only 2GB Used
It looks like a missed opportunity to put a faceID capable sensor to support motion gestures within a tvOS offshoot standalone app environment, plus authentication.
boopmaster··on German Government Agency warns about using Kaspersky
Working on a large corporation, I liken our AV deployments and endpoint security as the invisible hand of productivity destruction. I’m not saying these products don’t block malware, I’m not disagreeing with you at all.

It should be stated that, with a high degree of confidence, deploying these measures against your internal employees personal systems and cloud deployments WILL invariably lead to the destruction of employee output and system performance, when things inevitably do go wrong and whole operating systems are hosed if not obliterated.

Back up your data folks +Your environments +Your passwords.

It can take weeks to get back up to full speed when your system dies to AV or anything else.

boopmaster··on Google mandates workers back to Silicon Valley, other offices from April 4

boopmaster··on Faculty hiring dominated by graduates of elite institutions
While reductive to compare this to Amway Pin Levels, it may be a fair observation that many teachers joined that multi level marketing business with intent on working within trades outside of the MLM itself, yet often never escape.
boopmaster··on Can Slack-mania be cured with systemized discipline?
This is a brilliant idea. I work in a slack jungle most of the workday in a very large org across possible 100+ channels. Multiple instances on top of that.

Sometimes replies bucket up under the thread, sometimes they do not. Sometimes what should be threaded get fragmented into separate threads.

Love this idea.

Some of the old school IRC-channel ops functions could go a long way too (I think discord is more like that).

boopmaster··on The Nintendo Switch has now outsold the Wii
Uhm, actually… I get horrible hand cramps with the switch and lite models. Bulky grip add-ons are a must for me.
boopmaster··on Naomi Wu video demonetized on YouTube
There’s nothing inherently amoral about nudity. Demanding modesty of others, and expressing how bad they make you feel, is a reflection of yourself and the damage that others have done to you.

While fascinating to read through the thread here on all variations and manifestations of evil in each eye of the beholder, please bear in mind that these are uniquely held disturbances from the writer.

boopmaster··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
I am not sure why we have vaccine mandates that businesses are expected to audit for entry. That to me is absurd. I do not need to provide proof of MMR to enter a McDonalds. I am vaccinated and boosted, but the invasiveness in these requests is a little over the top. Regarding masks, well businesses do often require shirt and shoes for service. I fail to see where masks differ at all in that regard.
boopmaster··on Brain of a White-Collar Worker (2007)
I was referring to the IQ of the subject, which is technically called "Borderline" which technically rests above the designation of "moron" that resides at IQ 74 and lower. Good catch on that fluid not air correction.
boopmaster··on Ask HN: What if submitting a story cost 1 karma?
+ Downvote brigades can potentially swoop in and blow up all karma. It would not be helpful to encourage that.
boopmaster··on Music industry is suing youtube-dl hosters
I used one of these today, to download "deez nuts" and send that lovely vod as embedded in a signal message. I am not everyone, so I assume my use case would explain much of the usage pattern for the service. I am likely wrong.
boopmaster··on Indiana life insurance CEO says deaths are up 40% among people ages 18-64
