The isolation has drove him mad
boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: Twitter was unanimously predicted to implode. Nothing happened. Why?
Uh, I think it was a joke.
boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: What's your approach to raising kids?
A lot of great points. Mostly though I just want to say kudos on the fostering/adopting, I’d like to do the same one day.
boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: What's your approach to raising kids?
Mostly I look at other kids and families, identify what I like and don’t like about them, and work backwards from that.

For example I saw a family at a restaurant and the kids were watching videos on their phones with earphones in, while eating. It sickened me and I will never allow devices at the dinner table.

Another example, I’ve seen parents bring their kids to concerts and sporting events, despite being young and/or having a questionable level of interest. I liked how it seemed to broaden their horizons, and it seemed to me that it’s just as important to have kids join in your experiences where appropriate, as it is for you to join in theirs.

One other important thing I noticed is that your stance on something is only as good as the weakest link that enforces (or doesn’t enforce) something. I have in-laws that cave as soon as their are tears, and it has made it difficult to enforce things like “treats come after you eat your meal”.

boopboopbadoop··on The Sweet Spot for Buying Used Cars
Welcome to the Corolla club! I’ve had a 2009 Corolla since 2014. Aside from the expected stuff (brakes/lights/filters/oil changes/wipers/tires/battery), the only maintenance it has needed is a new exhaust connector. A couple things I love about it:

- I like to maintain my own things, and the car and parts are cheap enough that I don’t worry about screwing something up.

- Having owned it for a while, I know it’s quirks. E.g. I know if the radio starts going in and out, the battery is not charging and needs immediate attention.

- I don’t have to worry about it being stolen or getting dinged.

I planned on driving it to the ground, but I’m starting to believe that it will out live me.

boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: Do you or someone you know give money to your parents?
Ok sure. We’ll just give you tax advice and not tell you what country it pertains to.
boopboopbadoop··on El Salvador’s Historic Digital Asset Securities Law Passes
What I’m saying though is that their endgame is not to convert it back to fiat. It’s a currency for them. They’re not hodl’ing their bread money.
boopboopbadoop··on El Salvador’s Historic Digital Asset Securities Law Passes
I’m just a sideliner with popcorn, but don’t they use Bitcoin as a currency? So it seems like in that context, they swapped some of their currency (fiat) for their other currency (Bitcoin), which subsequently lost 60% of its value.
boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: How do you work on your mental health?
Thanks for your honesty with the last paragraph. What was your “x hours” if you don’t mind me asking?
boopboopbadoop··on Fidelity marks down the value of its Twitter stake by 56%
Sorry to interrupt your pitchfork campaign, but is there some set of information that we know this could be based off of, i.e. some sort of legally mandated report for shareholders of private companies? This is not my area of expertise nor am I in the US/familiar with US rules, but this thread has me curious.

boopboopbadoop··on An alarming number of US homebuyers are underwater
This is the kind of thing a real estate agent will tell you before they suggest you raise your bid. The fact is that it does matter - you could have bought a better house with the difference, your monthly payments could have been lower, etc.

boopboopbadoop··on FTX’s SBF had a secret 'back door' to transfer billions off the books
> You let someone else hold your crypto currencies, don't take the time to check if the said people holding your money has any validity and then you lose all your money? it unfortunately is your fault for trusting a scammer

Sequoia and their team of analysts, lawyers, etc did not see anything wrong with FTX. You expect individual investors to be able to research and see something wrong?

boopboopbadoop··on Texas schools send parents DNA kits to identify their kids’ bodies in emergencie
Who knows, maybe having parents do this task will make them re-evaluate their priorities. Instead of thinking about their rights, they might start thinking of outcomes from those rights on a more personal level.
boopboopbadoop··on 12,000 Facebook employees, 15% of its workforce, may lose jobs amid quiet layoff
Got it. Feels like this will be a lengthy process and require a lot of work, i.e. collecting evidence and documenting over multiple quarters, having people manage the process, all for 12k people. And my understanding is when you get PIP’d, you get offered a package of some kind to leave. I would be surprised if this approach is cheaper than just laying people off.
boopboopbadoop··on 12,000 Facebook employees, 15% of its workforce, may lose jobs amid quiet layoff
> until eventually they choose to quit

This is the part I don’t understand. What’s to stop people from not working and getting fired/packaged out instead?

boopboopbadoop··on ArriveCan’s $54M price tag ‘outrageous,’ tech leaders say
Good on the person for trying, but ya those stairs are a death trap. What’s worse is the replies that have no idea how bad those stairs are. One injury and you have a $100k lawsuit to settle on top of $65k for the new stairs.

boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: About to have a child, completely burnt out at my job, what do I do?
I see what you mean, but my point was around the cost saving aspect of it. Maybe everyone considers that aspect, but I figured it’s worth mentioning since once you go down the formula path, it’s hard/impossible to go back.
boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: About to have a child, completely burnt out at my job, what do I do?
To this point, consider breastfeeding. I won’t comment on nutritional differences, but you save money at the cost of time/flexibility.
boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: About to have a child, completely burnt out at my job, what do I do?
Agreed, it’s not expensive to start. Just wanted to add that if you don’t inherit or are not gifted stuff from friends and family for your kid that you need, check second hand stores and/or kijiji/Craigslist/etc first. Many items are 1/5 of the cost of buying it new, and a lot of the time it’s brand new anyways.

It does get expensive if you have to pay for care. Not sure where you live OP, or what your support system is like from family, so that may or may not be an issue.

boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: Did the Tesla return to work happen?
“Never” - I don’t have much confidence in things people say when they say it with such surety. E.g. if they found out more office days equals more productivity, they would stick with 40%?
boopboopbadoop··on Ask HN: How to handle a layoff when I already planning on leaving?
Make a suggestion up the chain to give remaining employees the option of a severance package. You can spin it as further cost savings, or a way to get rid of the non-believers. Then take the option yourself.
