Sadly, exFat doesn't work reliably on Windows as I've had random software fail when data is stored on a drive formatted with exFat.

Mostly that's the software's fault, mistakenly assuming anything "not NTFS" is FAT32 and insisting I need to "upgrade" my drives, even though I'm only using it as project storage.

I honestly don't know why user mode software can tell what format the volume is in, and wouldn't just expect the OS to handle it or provide various feature flags like VOLUME_SUPPORT_LARGE_FILES or so.

I wasn't within the region that would have totality. What I got mostly was this (partial was somewhere around 60-70 percent):

Me: Walks outside (currently not cloudy).
Brain: "Tut tut, looks like rai-WAIT WHY ARE THERE HARD SHADOWS?"
This happens to me whenever I wear sunglasses (my brain does not like them), but the weirdest feeling was not being able to feel glasses on my face because this time there weren't any!
boondaburrah··on Aging Parents with Lots of Stuff, and Children Who Don’t Want It
I have a number of things that were made back when repairing was the norm. Unfortunately, I know now if it were to break I wouldn't be able to find a repairman who knew what to do with it for any price I could afford. It'll become cheaper to buy throwaway stuff since the bills for repair are high (or more likely, I'll hoard the stuff until I can save up enough for the repair - but this is difficult when I don't have my own permanent place to live).

Unfortunately this is a problem that perpetuates itself. As more people buy the throwaway goods, repairmen see business dry up, and become rarer. The ones left are expensive.

Quality items made to last by local craftsmen sound great! As long as there's any craftsmen left by the time people turn to them for business.

Qt seems to have done a great job of this. There are occasional hiccups when OSX updates the look of their progress bars for example, but it never feels nearly as bad as Java Swing (when it's emulating the host OS) or wxWidgets (ironic, since they use native widgets like react-native).

So it can be done, but I imagine it isn't easy. Qt has years of experience doing it.

I keep trying to get into GBA development but this is actually what keeps blocking me. Everything they've written is set up just for their environment and is not really explained how it works. Sure, they explain what to change for your game, but my arm compiler is over here and could you just tell me where this gba.spec file comes from or what it does?! (etc. etc.)

There's a physical layer of the screen between the touch glass and the LCD that can be turned on, reducing the viewing angle. Anyone looking from the side will instead see a floral pattern, butterfly pattern, or something else I forget (stars?), depending on your setting. (You can't pick beyond these three because each pattern is physically its own layer it looks like)

This is classic Japanese market electronics. Rather than increase bottom line, add loads of niceties to compete.

My phone was a smartphone, a mobile wallet (osaifu-keitai, tap-to-pay), my train pass (osaifu-keitai is different hardware to android pay, as it works on turnstiles, even when the phone is dead/off, and has been a thing since 2004), a television (over the air!), an answering machine (no messages stored by carrier; the phone picks up if you don't answer and records it to the SD card), had those privacy filter things, and a really responsive camera.

Sadly, it has a non-replaceable battery and refuses to update android unless it can connect to a docomo tower (I think docomo hosts it's phone's system updates on internal network only, not internet). I had to retire the phone long before the hardware gave out.

I'm pretty much stuck with the phone's stock android because A) It's sharp, so the android hacking community hasn't heard of it. and B) I don't think any ROM would have drivers for any of the galapagos features. (especially I need osaifu-keitai, which as well as being a wallet and my train pass, has all of my arcade top scores associated with it (whenever I go, I just tap the phone and the arcade machine looks me up - unlocks all the bonuses I've achieved and my prefs))

One of the things that made me mad was that they only brought the aquos crystal over, which is a gimmick phone. It's a pretty good mid-range phone, but I saw reviews slam it on specs, implying that Sharp couldn't compete. Sharp had much more powerful phones available at the time, but not in the US.

The problem with the US market is that reviewers look for any superficial reason to slam you.

boondaburrah··on Essential Phone, available now
Can confirm, the Sharp phone I owned in Japan had an absolutely fabulous screen, 1080p in 4.5" (I long for compact flagships), vivid colour with customisable profiles, including an electronically switchable privacy filter (using the toggle buttons in the notification shade) with 3 designs! The OS had been optimised to run smooth as butter, even with crapware. Too bad it also had to have all the docomo apps.

Sharp for some reason refuses to sell their smartphones outside of Japan. When I lived there I had a Sharp phone - and it was amazing. Smoothest non-stock android experience I've had. Recently they were selling [did this finally happen?] off their phone business to foxconn because it was falling behind.

Man, if you actually tried to sell your phones, Sharp, they might have sold? Funny concept.

If this phone is indeed a Sharp creation, I'm all over it.

because in some cases, it's me that requires the physical presence - not the job. Working physically with the team is amazingly better for my productivity. Unfortunately, I have to take the jobs where they are. Since public transit is so bad, that's brutal commutes.
boondaburrah··on The Problem with F# Evangelism
This is my biggest problem when trying to work in ecmascript and when people ask me if I know things like "mapreduce."

They've come up with different words for things, and it drives me nuts. Specifically mapreduce: They call filtering mapping, and mapping reducing. I think this is where Redux gets it's "reducers" from. They aren't reducers damnit! It took me weeks to figure out what the hell they were talking about.

boondaburrah··on On Living and Thinking in Two Languages at Once
That reminds me of a commmon experience I have with asperger's. English is my native language, and yet I regularly have the issue with words not actually coming from where my thoughts are generated, and I can't always express the thought I've had as quickly and fully as I would like.

More recently, I've been taking a foreign language, and it feels much the same only more extreme. Since I've actually lived in the country where thins language is spoken, my words come at a reasonable speed now and feel automatic. The gap between thought and words is larger than ever. (2 years into the foreign language vs. a lifetime with my native should do that though)

I wonder if people living with Asperger's or similar disorders that delay development of language result in every language being your second. :P

boondaburrah··on App sizes are out of control
They seem to build it against a reasonable version of Qt, I haven't updated it in a while (because it's just a launcher), and when I do I'll just re-symlink against whatever Qt is currently installed (which I do keep updated)

I understand your argument, but in this particular case things aren't volatile enough that it causes any problems, and if it does it's just as easy to solve.

I'm lucky I set up call forwarding to my google number a while ago. I can't even receive calls anymore! If the skype gods are smiling, one of my associated phones will randomly ring if somebody tries to contact me on skype (Google voice I think tries to ring all your phones in hopes that you'll pick up one of them, but in practice it can be somewhat random what actually connects).

Sometimes it doesn't though, and then I have no idea you tried to contact me, because skype is so broken that it /never/ rings when you call me.

This makes matters worse when my skype number is listed as the contact number on some contracts I've signed (their computer system was set up to only accept Japanese phone numbers).

boondaburrah··on App sizes are out of control
I had a fun time with this once. The Jetbrains Toolbox app is written using Qt and is 150mb. I opend the .app package on mac, deleted the frameworks directory, and symlinked it to my system's Qt install.

It's now 6mb.

boondaburrah··on LinkedIn: It’s illegal to scrape our website without permission
I'm lucky my dad uses a different password for his gmail account than his linkedin login (using said gmail address). He was stuck for a while complaining that he couldn't log in. Turned out he was already logged in, and LinkedIn was just presenting him with a "put your gmail password in here so we can raid your contacts" box. It looks just like the login page, so he kept putting in his LinkedIn (not gmail) password and it kept saying "your password is incorrect."

What a shitty thing to do.

boondaburrah··on Show HN: 15-question language identification quiz
I recall C# being a musical reference (a higher note than c), which is why it's pronounced C-sharp and not say, c-pound.

I would occasionally call it Db (D-flat) to be an arse.

I'm not sure if there was a formalized reasoning behind the name or if what I heard was just a rationalisation.
