boogies··on Using a mild Twitter addiction to get things done
Real addicts don’t need any specialized apps. I have a Pinephone with SXMO and no social/messaging apps (except a weird dmenu-centric Reddit client I never use) but my IRC and HN addictions are still fed by an eternally open terminal and browser (though I can close them with a swipe or squeeze, they inevitably rise again unscathed when I ssh back into the server where weechat lives in an immortal tmux or reopen Firefox and tap “Restore Session”).
boogies··on iPhone camera app replaces person’s head with a leaf in photo
> everyone asking for “unmodified raw photos” to be produced don’t understand what they are asking for. Those “unmodified” photos would be unusable in most cases outside very bright conditions.

I’m asking for unmodified raw photos and modified ones. Or I would be if Megapixels didn’t already give me both on my GNU/Linux smartphone. The processed versions of the photo’s I’ve taken look great IMO, but I don’t see the harm in keeping the raws around, they’d probably be quite useable for producing even better edited versions if I were to import them into a full desktop image manipulaton program and let it process them with desktop power and more than a couple seconds of time to do it. And I’d think Apple would be be happy to sell bigger overpriced emmcs and iCloud subscriptions to SD-slotless iPhone users with raw image filled phones, and/or pop up a notification to delete them all with a tap when space was low.

Epik lets you buy domains more or less permanently for a large upfront cost (~$600 for a typical otherwise $10/year domain IIRC). Anyone know any other registrars that do?

> They've solved so many problems in the music-listening experience, it's amazing

And yet each of your comment’s 4 current replies describes a different “only” problem with Spotify that’s solved with folders of mp3s ;)

(Disclaimer: I listen to very little music, so I have no horse in this race except for loathing DRM, and I’m only guessing that the “missing quite a few major artists” problem is solvable by torrenting)

> By losing the noisy/spamming/trolling posters entirely, we might also lose their constructive/valuable content too.

That's why showdead is great! (The checkbox in your profile to unhide flagged and other 'killed' posts.) Not clear on if it unhides IP banned posters though. And I would like to try a forum that let you toggle it by category (IIUC Slashdot has post categories, though it peaked before my time and I don't know if they're used for that).

The Tor browser employs a variety of anti-fingerprinting measures and there’s a project that’s upstreamed some of them back into vanilla Firefox.
boogies··on Move myself to inactive
> Sure, but has it offended the CCP so far?

Images of Pooh and his Chinese name have been censored in mainland China, the movie Christopher Robin wasn’t allowed to release there, and a South Park episode about it got the whole show banned.

On sr.ht at least the issues would stay distributed in contributor's email inboxes in the event of a takedown. Maybe they'd even keep it up despite questionable takedown notices, like youtube-dl.org's host did (not surprisingly unlike the MS-owned repo host, given it's an RIAA member).

Another solution to issue loss would be embedding the issues in the repo, as some already extant tools do.

boogies··on Firefox 95 Released

Did you enable it? Firefox requires you to opt-in to any extensions running in private browsing (there’s a checkbox in the pop up that appears when you install them, and also on the add on preferences page).

boogies··on Firefox 95 Released
> they're all quite niche in terms of intended audience

I wouldn’t say that of GNOME Web.

> I'm not going back to a web without Ublock

I do every day (switching between luakit on a laptop and firefox-mobile-config on a smartphone), and IMO a good /etc/hosts is good enough (edit: luakit can also read the same blocklist format as µBlock, though it ignores cosmetic filters).

boogies··on Firefox 95 Released
No, in fact Mozilla’s hostility to embeddability makes the world’s largest megacorp look positively selfless as a contributor to the FLOSS community: the WebKit devs actually give 2¢ about it and webkit2gtk, and it enables a whole range of cross platform (GNU/* and *BSD) browsers from GNOME Web to suckless surf to luakit.
boogies··on Ask HN: Why doesn't YouTube have a competitor?

Yes, Minute Physics and Veritasium are two examples I remember off the top of my head (not an LBRY user since I quit algorithmic video binges after abusing them possibly worse then I do HN, IRC, and assorted doomscrolling now :P).

boogies··on Redesigned Notepad for Windows 11

As are HN (1.something decades) and Notepad.exes that aren’t as hot garbage as the newest one. X still works fine and IME is only improved by the new things (eg. sxmo, the smartphone UI I’m typing this in) still being built on its well settled, stable foundation.

boogies··on uBlock, I exfiltrate: exploiting ad blockers with CSS
You can't know how many times your browser's let malware through, there's practically no supply chain security, no reproducible builds, no way to know what code has been executed.

I don't need anyone's approval to run native apps either, both my PCs run C apps I built from source and shell scripts I wrote myself without it, languages of my choice with implementations simple enough to write myself, not runtimes that literally no one that's not Google can afford to independently maintain. That's real openness.

boogies··on CT scans of AirPods evolution
> It makes the earbuds smaller.

How can we verify that’s anything more than an urban legend? The same sort of rationalizations were made for the removal of the headphone jack, and they were proven false (the iPhone 7 had such a big empty space inside it that a YouTuber was able to fit Apple’s external lightning adapter in, drill a circle in the outer aluminum, and have a functioning 3.5mm jack). These CT scans seem to show some empty space where the stem meets the bud, perhaps they could detach there.
