bontaq··on We can't all use AI. Someone has to generate the training data
This is entirely my thesis on why they'll win. Of course google wishes they could ignore all attribution.

They are slighting the law just like airbnb and uber did. They offer a better form of consumption. This is disruption at it's finest, and it will be in the courts forever.

bontaq··on Building an interpreter for my programming language with ChatGPT
The new issues will be interesting. Now that I've seen the quality of the output and played with it a bit I'm already squinting at comments here and there. We're in for an even stranger internet.
bontaq··on The Forgotten Operating System That Keeps the NYC Subway System Alive (2019)
A modern tech stack won't help that much, there are other issues.

> Most subway services cannot significantly increase their frequencies during rush hours, except for the 1, G, J/Z, L, and M trains (the L service already is automated with CBTC).

> However, even without CBTC, the system is currently retrofitted to operate at frequencies of up to 60 trains per hour (tph) on the IND Queens Boulevard Line (30 tph on each of the local and express pairs of tracks made possible by the Jamaica–179th Street terminal, which has four sidings past the terminal for each set of tracks) and 33 tph on the IRT Flushing Line.

bontaq··on Empty offices are becoming apartments in Texas’s big cities
I heard similar things, mostly from HN and reddit. It's good to see that in reality it's doable.
bontaq··on Ask HN: So, what's up with Phoenix (web framework)?
Any time I want to get a side project actually done, I'll use Phoenix + Live View. It's effective and efficient (from both a dev perspective, a server resources perspective, and a client load speed perspective). You don't have to worry about an API or setting up react etc but have enough interactivity to get your idea across.

I don't think it's any fanatical following, it looks like a lot of other people are in the same boat as me with it. It's just good and effective.

bontaq··on GHC 9.4.1 is now available
Pretty much what rrradical said. I haven't seen any articles around "writing code with only haskell 2010 vs GHC2021", but now that we have a baseline in the community things like that could be written.

Actually that flag existing is part of why I think new books are being written, to start defining what "modern" (with all these flags on by default) haskell looks like.

bontaq··on GHC 9.4.1 is now available
Hard to say if it's gotten more popular (yet), but development speed has picked up and some longstanding things have been fixed. A lot of things in the ecosystem have improved as well. It feels like it's all moving again, and to a place it could start gaining popularity.

Off the top of my head:

* Haskell language server solved the ide support problem

* Easy record access with . syntax (i.e. person.name to get a name off a person)

* A new {-# LANGUAGE GHC2021 #-} pragma that turns on a bunch of flags by default to write modern haskell

* GHCup to control installed haskell & tool versions

* Haskell foundation formed to support growing haskell

* A proposal* to work towards supporting dependent types was accepted

A lot more of course but it all points to making haskell more enjoyable to get into and use, and a good future ahead.

bontaq··on The global housing market is broken, and it’s dividing entire countries
It's pretty nice when you're paying off your mortgage instead of your landlords.
bontaq··on Food security and the coming storm
This seems to imply that food waste will be lessened. Instead, prices will simply be raised, until we hit some unsustainable point and there is no extra food to waste. Lessening food waste now would require planning for the future and changes to existing systems.
bontaq··on The great junk transfer is coming
The article says, "The parents of baby boomers, the oldest generation alive today, were savers, having learned in the lean times of war and the Great Depression to treasure what they owned."
bontaq··on Amazon abruptly fires senior managers tied to unionized warehouse
It's not, supervisors are excluded from union organizing protections.
bontaq··on Amazon abruptly fires senior managers tied to unionized warehouse
...What case in court?
bontaq··on How destructive are nuclear weapons really?
Destroying the entirety of Manhattan beneath 80th st or so, along with a significant part of Manhattan-facing Brooklyn and Hoboken shorelines, with a single reasonably placed bomb is actually about as destructive as I imagined (following their 3 miles out rule).

But sure, let's lighten up about nukes!

bontaq··on The Boschian Horror of ‘Elden Ring’
Yep, and that is miyazaki's feelings as well.

"We don't want to include a difficulty selection because we want to bring everyone to the same level of discussion and the same level of enjoyment," Miyazaki said. "So we want everyone … to first face that challenge and to overcome it in some way that suits them as a player."

"We want everyone to feel that sense of accomplishment. We want everyone to feel elated and to join that discussion on the same level. We feel if there's different difficulties, that's going to segment and fragment the user base. People will have different experiences based on that [differing difficulty level]. This is something we take to heart when we design games. It's been the same way for previous titles and it's very much the same with Sekiro."

It makes some sense, the constant in the world is the bosses, so you have to change yourself in some way to beat them. If you suck at souls games, like I do, that means a lot of studying to finally win. But then I'm content that I've beaten the same thing everyone has.

bontaq··on Why is the Simula One so expensive?
Any word on it having diopter adjustment? It'd be nice to be able to wear this without glasses.
bontaq··on Why does man print “gimme gimme gimme” at 00:30? (2017)
It's not removed, read what they wrote:

> This issue has been fixed with commit 84bde8: Running man with man -w will no longer trigger this easter egg.

Running man with no arguments still triggers it. I also must have missed the part where someone "pushed their view".

bontaq··on F# is the best coding language today
We've come around to something like the "imperative shell, functional core" pattern. All the business logic is purely functional (so no database calls or side effects), and any data needs are done as close to the edge of the system as possible.

You can do it in any language, FP languages can help enforce the distinction. For going even more functional, in FP languages that support it, free monads and effect systems allow you to define interpreters for effects and you can write code more or less like you would non-functionally, but the interpretation can be pure (say hardcoded results for a query) for tests, and impure for actually running. Basically fancy dependency injection, but for everything.

bontaq··on The Collapse of American Identity
I think the split happened before Reagan. About the closest we got to raising the standard of US society even higher was Roosevelt's second bill of rights speech in 1944:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Bill_of_Rights#Roosevel...

Now we fight over some fraction of a part of one of his ideas, like lowering medicare eligibility to 60. It's mildly depressing to consider where we could be.

bontaq··on A robot to replace the need for farmers to go inside the grain bin
It sure seems that way, across all the youtube farming channels I watch, one thing that ties them together is they do not like going into the silo and do consider it unsafe. I have no idea what OP is talking about besides their imagination.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7oxLIP1RRo here's a whole episode about grain bin rescue training. They raised $60,000 for first responders in their grain bin safety campaign.

bontaq··on BTC Endgame
If anything, a government might even like a public ledger of all transactions. Sure, you can sell in person, and then it's about as secretive as cash.
bontaq··on The worst of the two worlds: Excel meets Outlook
Simon Peyton Jones, one of the creators of Haskell, has been on that point for awhile too (https://www.slideshare.net/kfrdbs/peyton-jones). I think it's his main area of research working at Microsoft actually.
bontaq··on NYC’s new digital subway map
Almost unusably slow in firefox on a decent macbook pro, it looks nice though.
bontaq··on Twitter and Facebook's action over Joe Biden article reignites bias claims
It is sort of funny to say, "America has never been about quality," while referencing a poem about immigrants who moved here for a better quality of life. I think you've missed something rather obvious.
bontaq··on Commerce Department Prohibits WeChat and TikTok Transactions
This seems like an underappreciated point, some of my coworkers have mentioned how much it sucks to have their main method of contact with family back in China stripped from them.
bontaq··on What killed Haskell, could kill Rust, too
It's not targeted towards that. It's a 30 year old research language that is still ahead, and I don't really see a reason why it should change in any way towards businesses. If anything, it should lean more into research to keep ahead. I do not believe catering to anything in the corporate area will result in anything equivalent to the decades of research.
bontaq··on People slept on grass beds 200k years ago
I'm waiting for sleeping in hammocks to catch on here. Soon, there'll be an article espousing easy summer sleeping and the more vertical position making for easier breathing. I do sleep in one but it'll be funny to see.
bontaq··on Show HN: Textdb.dev – simple data sharing for fun projects
I have added an option in the data view to customize text alignment, thanks for the good idea
bontaq··on Show HN: Textdb.dev – simple data sharing for fun projects
Nope, especially seeing the current usage / data size I think it's perfectly fine to hang around forever. I may eventually implement something to clean up data with no reads for > 1 month, but again so far it looks fine to leave things around.
bontaq··on Show HN: Textdb.dev – simple data sharing for fun projects
How would you phrase it?

"write only link here"?

I really wanna keep the basic information visible and am not sure about about adding another line

bontaq··on Show HN: Textdb.dev – simple data sharing for fun projects
Nah it just gives you a more secret id, I'm happy to support people talking about apples at https://textdb.dev/data/apples
