Obviously anyone can "take credit" for things like this, but if this[1] is true, then jesus.

Edit: Since it's topical, I enjoy listening to Chuck Rossi in interviews or presentations. Releng 2014 - Keynote 1: Chuck Rossi, Release Engineering, Facebook Inc. | Talks at Google [2]

bombtrack··on Merry Christmas to HN
There's several extensions folks have written to add layers of functionality to HN -- collapsible comments being a major one.

I use HN Enhancement Suite: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hacker-news-enhanc...

bombtrack··on Amethyst – A tiling window manager for OS X
I posted this yesterday in the thread about the Rust-written window manager, but it's relevant here as well.

There are plenty of apps that provide varying levels of window-manager functionality to OS X. I would try a couple out and see which feels right to you. I have tried most of them, and personally prefer Moom.

I tried several for OS X and landed on using Moom [0].

The layout snapshots is really handy to jumpstart the day and put everything in place. Keyboard shortcuts allow resizing and moving windows around. It's highly configurable, so you can add or remove features as you see fit. I'd give the free trial a spin.

bombtrack··on You Don't Need JQuery
I'm sure you're aware of this, but for others who may not know: the 2.x versions of jQuery dropped support for old browsers (IE 6, 7, 8) to reduce size (12% smaller) and complexity necessitated by being so backwards-compatible [0].

Thankfully we only support IE9+ where I work, so I grab the latest 2.x version these days.

bombtrack··on Show HN: Hosty – Image/Text self-hosting for minimalists in PHP
I include bower_components/ in .gitignore and use grunt-bowercopy[0] to move the files you actually want from bower_components/ to public/{js,css} or wherever. Files get committed once they're in public/ and I only re-run the grunt task when I want to upgrade a lib. I can understand people thinking this is overkill for a small project, but when you have dozens of libraries it's nice to have dependencies and their versions clearly defined.

bombtrack··on Show HN: Hosty – Image/Text self-hosting for minimalists in PHP
Oh, I fully agree with how you have everything set up and organized. It's clear you tried to be as formal as possible with organizing the app, it's dependencies and build processes, for _development_. People are just misunderstanding that bit or nitpicking. Like I said, it's damned if you do, damned if you don't.
bombtrack··on Show HN: Hosty – Image/Text self-hosting for minimalists in PHP
I agree with the other reply -- this isn't so much of an indictment of PHP, as it is front-end development in general.

Sure, to keep it simple you could download your JS and PHP deps once and bundle them all up in one nice zip. I think many apps provide a "dist" or "release" bundle (this one, in fact, does) in which you don't have to care about Composer, Bower or npm. However, to properly organize deps or define build processes for development, why not use some of the (frankly) common tools available?

It's funny how HN could see a simple unzip-and-go app and scoff "amateur hour hobby project". But if someone takes a more formal approach to their hobby app it can flip and scoff "over-engineered bloated setup".

bombtrack··on Ask HN: OS X folks – do you use Finder?
I'm not aware of a way to prevent just seeing them with hidden file visibility turned on. However, there's several options to disable per-folder .DS_Store file creation: http://www.chrisnovoa.com/os-x-lion-ds_store-disabling/
bombtrack··on Where Are the Hardest Places to Live in the U.S.?

bombtrack··on YouTube Ready to Eliminate Ads [video]
My last guess is that you're in a country advertisers don't care about. Other than that, I've lost interest and hope you enjoy your loophole ;)
bombtrack··on YouTube Ready to Eliminate Ads [video]
If you disable NoScript do you see an ad prior to the video?

(I didn't look closely at it -- was in a "popular videos" cluster and VEVO stuff will always have ads)

bombtrack··on YouTube Ready to Eliminate Ads [video]
Before I commented I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy, so I actually tested it with ABP off. This video [1] played a 30s Coors Lite commercial for me after I disabled ABP and refreshed. Any corporate/official type channel will likely be heavily monetized and feature ads prior to starting.

bombtrack··on YouTube Ready to Eliminate Ads [video]
YouTube most definitely has ads. However, if you use Adblock Plus (or similar extensions) you won't see them.
bombtrack··on Who am I: A mind reader (don't forget to view source)
There's several JSON formatter packages that can be installed via Package Control: cmd + shift + P, select "install package", then search for "json". I'm not sure which one I have installed, but doing cmd + shift + P in a proper context and typing "json" should give you an option for "Indent JSON" or similar.

Otherwise, there's always sites like http://pro.jsonlint.com/

Happy to help. It's elaborated on here [0] along with some other tips (warning: autoplay video).

bombtrack··on OS X Yosemite
Yes, Mavericks started using SMB2 which has many reported performance issues [0]. Most people experiencing it can work around this by using cifs:// instead of smb:// or disabling SMB2 and reverting to using SMB1 [1].

FYI, in appropriate locations (browsers), holding the period key will give you options for .us, .org, .edu, .net, and .com.
bombtrack··on Cakebrew: The Mac App for Homebrew
Yea, I only do a "brew cask search" for new apps I want to install. I believe you would want to avoid attempting to re-install an app via Cask that was installed normally (~/Applications vs /Applications). Personally, I would do a clean install to transition an app to being managed by Cask.
bombtrack··on Cakebrew: The Mac App for Homebrew
Same reason people love package managers in general. A single bash script can install all the programs you want. Add Homebrew Cask and even your GUI apps can be included in that script alongside wget, vnstat, whatever.
bombtrack··on Last.fm is ending their streaming radio service in April
Fully agree. I'll repost what I said in a previous last.fm discussion.

> I treasure my last.fm stats so much. It has documented 9 years of my life in a way that no other site or social network could express.

bombtrack··on Ask HN: Where are the 750k Bitcoins lost by Mt. Gox?
There's a lengthy post in /r/BitcoinMarkets about it:

bombtrack··on Show HN: Google Music for Mac
I've always wanted to do something similar. The 20k track limit on Google Music makes me prune my online collection every so often which is annoying. I think it would be a fun project to write a basic web streaming player that pulls mp3s from S3/Cloudfront. I would gladly pay Google a fee to increase the storage limit though.
bombtrack··on Show HN: Google Music for Mac
Last.fm scrobbling was the first thing I looked for as well. It's pretty much a necessity for me at this point that any software-based music player I use needs to support last.fm scrobbling. There's several Chrome extensions that take care of it for the in-browser player as people below have mentioned.
bombtrack··on Our biggest gripes with OS X Mavericks
Suffered the same problem. I'm getting around it by using cmd-k, then using cifs://server/share to connect instead.
bombtrack··on Winamp shutting down on December 20th, 2013
I have purchased Parallels and also recently upgraded to v9 _just_ to run the Windows version of Winamp as my main mp3 player. Running Parallels in "coherence" mode makes Winamp look/act/run basically as if it were any other OS X app. It's amazing.
bombtrack··on New Dell UltraSharp Monitors
I always imagined using dual 27" screens like that too. However, I have found that I prefer to stack a tall-ish browser window and terminal on the portrait monitor and keep 2+ panes of code on the landscape monitor.
bombtrack··on Mac Pro gets half-assed “update”
You are correct and that is unfortunate. For what it's worth, I purchased a copy of Lion.
