bolognafairy··on Six day and IP address certificate options in 2025
How could the person you’re replying to have reasonably phrased their comment to avoid this snark from you?

I’m 1,000% sure that they know what you’re trying to espouse. Nowhere in the comment does it say “here is an exhaustive list of hosted email providers”. It’s a JOKE.

I’ve been using Let’s Encrypt since its release, including for identical-sounding home / hobbyist uses, and have never had these uses.

I’m not saying that our use cases are truly identical, but from what you’ve described, I don’t think that your experience is simply “how things are”.

bolognafairy··on ZFS 2.3 released with ZFS raidz expansion
It’s a cute story that plays into the same old assertions about Steve Jobs, but the conclusion is mostly baseless. There are many other, more credible, less conspiratorial, possible explanations.
bolognafairy··on I spent 18 years in the Linux console
I totally understand the concern but I think that it’s well within reason that your analogy overstates the issue. I haven’t given it all that much thought, but to me it seems reasonable that there are enough different use cases that are similar enough to still get a net benefit from a shared language. How much of this language fragmentation is just a reflection of Linux ecosystem fragmentation as opposed to e.g. “the right tool for each job”? I’d bet a fair bit.

Really one of those “has anyone that built this tried using it for its intended purpose?” things. Not having a carefully considered cache warning solution* is like…if someone built a CDN based on a description someone gave them, instead of actually understanding the problem a CDN sets out to solve.

* EDIT: actually, any solution that at least attempts to mitigate a thundering herd. I am at least somewhat empathetic to the “indiscriminately allowing pre-warming destroys the shared cache” viewpoint. But there are still plenty of things that can be done!

bolognafairy··on IP addresses through 2024
You’re leaning heavily on “like” here. The address spaces are different. That’s the point.
bolognafairy··on Starlink is now cheaper than leading internet provider in some African countries
Yeah, until another person like you makes the same argument about whatever non-local thing the residents spend all that saved money on.
bolognafairy··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
They certainly have an effect on one-another. You can’t just say “old hackers!”. ALL codebases are tied down by legacy design decisions after a long enough period of time. Microsoft’s commitment to backwards-compatibility has inarguably resulted in Windows flaws hanging around for longer than they’d otherwise need to. The argument is around whether or not it’s worth it.

You can’t throw all your engineering knowhow out the window just because you’re discussing something politically charged. This is simply how code works.

bolognafairy··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
Please don’t spoil this enjoyable nuanced conversation about Apple’s flaws with the usual laundry list of, frankly, unintelligent copy-pasted 2000s Mac vs PC online forum flame war talking points.

You’ve referred to iTunes in the present tense when it hasn’t existed for years, refer to ‘Apple fans’ as some sort of completely separate group of clearly defined people, and spend an unjustifiable amount of your comment talking about your quite niche professional Windows backwards compatibility use case.

We don’t need to rehash this whole thing. Please. Don’t take all the oxygen out of the room.

bolognafairy··on F-Droid Fake Signer PoC
“Users are dumb” is not and was never the attitude. On average, people are average. You’ve just got completely unrealistic expectations of people. You’re asking for the world to be built around your wants, needs, preferences, and areas of expertise. Something this complex in the hands of 99.99% of the population would be entirely useless.
bolognafairy··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
No. That’s your bias as a nerd. There are countless well-publicised examples of ‘many eyeballs’ not being remotely as effective as nerds make it out to be.
bolognafairy··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
This is still a very dishonest representation of what’s actually happening.

Those evil CEOs pulling the wool over the eyes of the poor shareholders!

This is the employment contract that was negotiated and agreed to by the board / shareholders.

bolognafairy··on New Google Sheet on half of 13.6" MacBook Air screen is fully covered by popups
Yep. If there’s one thing that Big Tech is doing even remotely better at in 2024, it’s letting the self-interest of the increasingly aging top brass guide the ship into making products that don’t assume that everyone is 20 years old with perfect vision.

It’s one of the few things that Apple is doing well at, but they’re doing really well at it.

bolognafairy··on New Google Sheet on half of 13.6" MacBook Air screen is fully covered by popups
They’re the one that demanded it.

Don’t try to pretend that any more than 1% of the people at Google are actually doing anything that moves even the slightest needle, regardless of ‘rank’.

bolognafairy··on New Google Sheet on half of 13.6" MacBook Air screen is fully covered by popups
That’s only 50% of the KPI!

Ha. Facebook Page management. I used to work for a 5-person company, and setting up the Facebook page was one of the things that ended up on my plate. We were acquired over two years ago, by a Real Company, with Actual Marketing People.

It’s been my mission to get this damn Facebook page out of my life. I have no business having anything to do with it, especially now. Every few months I manage to wrangle someone from Marketing to take it off my hands, but most of the time it takes me at least half an hour for me to work out how to even grant someone else permission to manage the page. This is AFTER I find the official Facebook help article for this process.

Through a combination of the Marketing person losing interest, and my ineptitude, I think I only managed to actually close this one off a few weeks ago. There’s every chance that in a few months I’ll find out that I didn’t do it properly.

I’m in my late 20s. I understand this generation of social networks. I was a very heavy Facebook user up until a couple of years ago. I’m not some clueless old idiot. This isn’t an operation that Facebook has any incentive to ‘hide away’. I can’t possibly see how this is anything other than egregious incompetence on Meta’s part. They’re simply too big to make…anything, anymore.

That is not the same thing.
bolognafairy··on Query Apple's FindMy network with Python
My experience is that this is rarely true in reality. I live in a freestanding house in a suburban area (not in the US, let alone SF). I’ve moved a couple of times since I’ve started using AirTags. Even when none of my own devices have been around, I still manage to get quite frequent location updates.
bolognafairy··on Query Apple's FindMy network with Python
> but Apple decided to encrypt it.

Yes. As part of a major effort to reduce the abuse potential of AirTags, something that people have been very justifiably demanding.

bolognafairy··on Query Apple's FindMy network with Python
Linux is not a “major desktop operating system”. Let’s be intellectually honest here, particularly because you’re using the number “3” to bolster your argument that Apple is being negligent or unfair or whatever. Be annoyed at Apple for not ‘supporting Android’ or whatever all you want, but let’s not pretend that Apple isn’t paying a very justifiable amount of attention to desktop Linux. What next, iCloud.com doesn’t load properly in Lynx?
bolognafairy··on Query Apple's FindMy network with Python
“Items” is not an Apple jargon term for AirTags. AirTags are not the only thing that can show up in this list. Third-party FindMy-compatible devices are quite common.

Since you frankly seem to have a bee in your bonnet about Apple, I’d suggest that you actually look into these. They might be more to your taste.
