bokohut··on Enterprises in for a shock when they realize power and cooling demands of AI
Can we proactively speculate that as businesses port to use artificial intelligence at an ever increasing rate in time they will remove human roles in their short term efforts to decrease business costs? In reality however over the longer term they will just be locking themselves into a greater expense of energy, either indirect from cloud use or directly when buying from a centralized energy provider. With salaried employees a business can “excuse away" their raise or fire them for another person that will take equal pay however one must pay their cloud/energy bill to operate tomorrow. Are we as a species to be unintelligent and artificially believe that prices will not continue to rise, most certainly for energy? Interesting immediate times as the technology Kool-A.i.d propagates with little regard for the long term impacts.
bokohut··on Eliminating Daylight Savings Time would make the average American’s life darker
I'll just leave this here since it is just so 'simple' to state a verbal objective without any insight as to the complexity behind the words that were enunciated. We see this time and again in our ever changing complex world where technology already has established a clear lock-in dependency and now someone suggests to change a foundational aspect of those systems, time, without considering any impacts?

My trail of crumbs from experience: And what about all the daylight savings time software logic that is baked into critical systems which require perpetual uptime supporting said modern society? I ask this question because I have personally written daylight savings time management into several software systems and this 'old code' just works and has for decades. Now if that 'old code' is no longer needed, who is going to change it? If that code does get changed then how will it be deployed to those 'old' systems? I have so many more relevant questions for those not thinking about the impacts of this change but I do not want to overwhelm anyone reading up to this point. Consider for a moment your own devices that have a 24 hour clock contained within. It is beyond obvious to those of us who practice big picture thinking in which we know that the "majority" does not maintain their devices and with time being a core factor of most technology changing our implementation of time will therefore break a lot of that technology.

Should such a change occur it is not something that can be 'walked' in when business feels like doing it and therefore it IMMEDIATELY becomes a top priority for any technology impacted that MUST adopt the change. Another Y2K like event coming for those that lived the original one. We are certain to see a failure of several systems and one can only hope that changing time doesn't equate to those systems invoking loss of life because those with experience on such matters know that losses of all kinds are certain to happen, just give it time.

Electricity is not free and when one really needs something money talks right?

Given the distance from my home to others some people I cannot help because the voltage drop would be to great over the needed corded run. Those within proximity to me that would not suffer voltage drop and undue strain on my own storage system I would gladly help but my own storage is finite and if I help just one person then...

My proactive planning and execution for my decentralized energy generation and storage system was done for my own families quality of life continuity based on my life's experiences. Everyone's life experiences are different and therefore your mileage will vary.

bokohut··on Satellite powered estimation of global solar potential
I find this argument short sighted time and again based on personal life experiences as a former electrician given the life impacting results I have witnessed from power losses.

My electrical experiences are regional to my area in the NorthEast US where long duration events have caused many thousands of US dollars in lost food, tens of thousands of dollars in losses from flooded basements, and when temperatures in Winter often drop below freezing and the power goes out pipes begin to freeze causing even more damage structure wide. In time we will see insurance companies reducing rates for those with local energy storage as the corporate insurance machine catches up to understand the benefits of having such power storage locally. I laugh when people make this exact financial reasoning argument because so few people look at the big picture and fail to comprehend the impacts to their life when that switch on the wall leaves one in the dark. Then again I have designed and architected many successful software systems for high availability and my foundational starting point with any system is always energy. Most of those in society assume that switch will always turn on that light and when it does not then those impacted begin to realize what a "centralized grid" truly means.

Decentralizing the grid is already happening as CA very recently announced any new residences built as of 2026 and beyond must be constructed with PV and storage. Individuals can act in ignorance on the energy problems for now however in time everyone will be forced to participate as the issues continue to compound.

Proactive versus reactive, because by the time it matters it will already be too late.

I referred to it as "the woes" but yes I agree with your choice of words as well. As an experienced technology builder I generalize the struggles I vividly recall and it often involves parties not doing the real work and therefore they lack the comprehension of the details that are all that truly matters. This applies to a lot of things today, tech included, where most have no idea how anything works and the solution typically boils down to, did you power cycle it?
bokohut··on Satellite powered estimation of global solar potential
I used an early version of the PV roof tool in 2020 for my own PV roof design. The front of my rectangle shaped home faces exactly North and therefore all sides are respective to exactly E/W/S. Given my professional experiences and knowledge awareness of photons I therefore opted to cover my entire roof in PV collecting technology and not just what faces direct sunlight, if one can see outside during daylight hours then the PV is functioning. Case in point, right now it is currently very cloudy and rainy here in the NE,USA and the roof is still generating 700 watts while my home's base load demand of 400 watts has the overage of 300 watts going to batteries. I have had this system for 3 years now and my choice to have such a system proved itself in our first outage when everyone else was panicking in the dark for hours. I sat relaxed and watched others in great stress and anxiety planning on how to preserve their refrig/freezers while visually panicking over their sump pumps not running in their basements. PV with a battery is a quality of life choice that directly impacts one's health and what price do you put on your health? I will also share with such sites that the energy and cost saving estimates are very much often wrong since the energy data is generalized for everyone and energy use per person significantly varies, some estimates are laughable to only me since I have my families own real world data for the last decade. I have also tracked our entire resource consumption at home for nearly a decade now, yes I am a data nerd to the extremes, and not only does such a solution save one GREAT stress and anxiety when it matters most but it also greatly reduces variable financial expenses and can also make one revenue.

Proactive versus reactive : The data doesn't lie, people do.

bokohut··on ISO 8583: The language of credit cards
A lot of payments chatter on here recently and patio11 throwing out some great content as well. May I ask where this pretty visual explanation website was 25 years ago? ;) Oh the woes of programming ISO8583 as I see another commented on EBCDIC which adds in a whole other level of mind numbing when passing between the endians. It was a fun experience however back in the early 2000s when I worked in isolation with Discover card to get the GUID field added to the ISO8583 specification.

We are living in changing times on many fronts and the worlds financial systems is one of those new battlefields. Many are ignorant as to what is occurring but with big tech owning their own payments ecosystems this should be insight for others not aware as we are absolutely certain to see more following their lead. Some of those others following are entire countries, they are just a bigger business after all, as it is already happening for those aware and a small select few are doing i.t.

bokohut··on Coder wrote a bug so bad security guards wanted a word when he arrived at work
Several payments and financial posts within as money mistakes often leave impacting memories for those involved.

As a dotcom kid who founded and wrote the core systems for several payment processing companies over the decades I recall 2005 when a company using one of our partner banks was breached. This was CardSystems, the largest publicly known breach at the time, and I was tasked to perform a full code review of their systems to find any issues. The payments gateway contained a valid crc nontest card number compiled into authorization logic that had no deployment switching control and recorded no transaction information when that card number was used. Any merchant using CardSystems under this payment gateway suffered unknown losses from approved transactions that were never recorded into any system. I postulated who had done this but federal law enforcement around the breach buried this and other key discoveries I had found since the company was being dissolved and my findings were therefore deemed immaterial.

bokohut··on Arctic tundra is now emitting more carbon than it absorbs, US agency says
Possible words to consider from a nobody thinker.

The earth is currently a spheroid which has shaped itself over eons of time per the slow ice accumulation at the poles. Some "simple" math can roughly speculate the weight of that ice at each pole and such calculations reflect very large mass numbers that many humans have difficulty comprehending given the large numerical value let alone the consideration of the vast quantities of time that these processes have occurred. Science now reflects an accelerated melting to which the normalized equilibrium established over those eons prior to humans is changing. Scientific proof also exists that the poles once had flourishing plant life and global water levels over our studied geological record have both been higher and lower than they are now as we know them. Returning to the spheroid mentioned relative to the ice mass that is now being dispersed back into liquid spread throughout the oceans our real problems have yet to begin of which I have heard few mention but some have paused in awe when talked upon. As that ice melts and that mass is redistributed from the poles our spinning ball of rock will naturally rebound to a sphere and in doing so that rock will crack and shift in time to return to that shape not incurring the weight provided by the poles. In our data driven connected world everyone can now play along with this nobody thinkers theory watching in near real time by observing the ever increasing anomalous seismic and volcanic activity as that rebound sets in. We do not know what we do not know however no one can escape our future which is being dictated by every past human action. A truly great time to be alive as change is the only thing guaranteed.

bokohut··on The Northeast is becoming fire country
I was (un)fortunate to be in the PNW during the second week of July this year when temperatures in White Salmon, WA on the Columbia River Gorge hit 113 degrees Fahrenheit. The infrastructure architect in me saw nothing but HVAC deployments going in everywhere all the while the energy grid was doing rolling blackouts from the spike in cooling demand for those that had it. Most importantly was the immediate commercial reaction as NEARLY ALL BUSINESSES WERE CLOSED in the region because the locals could not deal with the abnormally high temperature delta as few places had cooling. That last line is critical to those that are cognizant of economics and where "speculated" climate change will lead the human population. We all will certainly be dead at some point in our futures however the verdict remains out on "weather" Mother Nature will continue to freeze, drown, burn, and roast us away. Should you know any former CTO's or technology entrepreneurs you could ask them?

As one myself I possess pallets of nearly new equipment that had zero issues in function and was only decommissioned per security compliance requirements involving End Of Life equipment. Many informed consumers are now complaining about the forced hardware upgrade for Windows 11 but this EOL revenue technique has existed for decades given Payment Card Industry (P.C.I.) compliance.

bokohut··on Automating processes with software is hard
Automation is about saving one's time and time is something that no amount of money can directly buy more of. One can invest their time and money however to indirectly "buy" one more time through reduction of mundane tasks that many humans have come to accept as normal. Software only solutions aside my own personal and professional experiences have involved building several automation sensor networks and one of the first I built was over 20 years ago that was within my own house. In 2004 my master electrician father and I wired my entire house with both high voltage, 220v/110v, as well as low voltage, 24v/12v, in my plan to build a smart home. My automation planning choices then were focused on exactly this, saving me sub seconds of time here, there, and everywhere. As a former electrician I was acutely aware of light switch placement in a room and the time it takes to turn it on and off each and every time but I asked myself then if my creative awareness could successfully design out the need to turn on a light switch as I enter a room? I did just that using the automation sensor network I built that interacts with source code I wrote which manipulates other devices based on logic of sensor states and any other sensors or inputs I deemed inclusive for the logic's objective. In the last 20 years I have rarely turned on light switches as they come on by "magic" when anyone enters a room and this "magic" is actually real world human time saved for that individual entering said room. I encourage those intrigued by these words to do some of your own math on the time you spend where you reside turning on and off light switches. There will be those here that see it foolish to automate anything, any longshore men present here? There will be those here also that see some benefits to it but having lived in it for 20 years I will never live without it again.

bokohut··on Ask HN: Anyone learned art (drawing, caricature etc.) as an adult?
I began rock carving a few years ago from zero prior experience of any kind. I have been finding Native American and Paleo era rock relics in and around my house for over a decade now, I have hundreds of items and it has inspired me deeply. One day it hit me broadside that these early humans were using only what they had to survive and here I am picking up rocks carved by people many thousands of years old that look the same as the day they were lost. I have written countless lines of code over the decades and much of that is still running to this day in past founded entities however nothing I have created prior will outlast my rock carvings.

I find the carving experience like a drug. I'm "isolated" from the external senses in wearing ear protection, eye protection, and a HEPA filter breather from the silica. In my mind I am carving away in isolation to make some shape that is whatever I set out to create via my planning and selected rock target. Instead of a keyboard which I use to make computers do whatever I want I instead have hammers, chisels, and power tools to shape a rock as I see fit. Every rock I have carved will still be the same tomorrow, next year, next century, and every coming millennium.

You edited your first posted verbiage which contained the word "perception" and this is the only reason I logged in to respond.

Anything worth doing takes considerable time and the personal pressures imposed by society in this day and age are significantly impacting to everyone given our 'now' world that is being incorrectly perceived holistically as 'instant'. For those entrepreneurs that are long game investing their time in "hard problems" I encourage all those toiling to avoid the hype. bokohut··on AI-Driven Drone Surveillance Is Leading to Home Insurance Cancellations
Expanding on this idea - "Data driven decisions are leading to significant change."

No matter the source of the data, all data available is being used for any and all purposes regardless of morals or ethics. As such in business profits are the goal however in war it is to win.

As a multiple fintech founder from the 1990s I have experience with the earliest payment breaches, some known, some not. The banks were buying this data from crims to offset losses by proactively changing the impacted account numbers before they could be used. Few complained when the bank changed their account number unless of course one had a unique sequential card number. ;)

There is an ever increasing amount of public data being produced daily from countless sensors and devices now covering our entire world and to some degree space. Given this evolution one is to believe they can still hide? Just because data comes from a certain sensor or source does not limit the data use in any specific way and if you believe otherwise I have ocean front property in Kansas to deed you. Now consider the number of known breaches today since the internet went public and multiply that value by some large number N to postulate a total breaches number ever. Point being is there is a lot of data available if one knows where to look and HOW to apply that information for "profit" and/or to "win".

Just as banks were paying crims for data to proactively offset losses this mindset works in other business' today as well however it is certainly not being received openly given the impact to consumers during these increasingly challenging economic times which only greatly compounds that impact. Do recall that one can just change their financial account information but one cannot change their health records so why does that matter? Let us propose the hypothetical that health insurance companies are now buying up health records that have been leaked. We all know why they are doing this because these health insurance companies are looking to aggressively target the healthy to sign up with them correct?

Interesting times ahead as "change" continues.

bokohut··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
Yes, You can buy an electric tankless but just be extremely informed of the large amperage requirement to instantly heat your selected gallons per minute flow.
bokohut··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
Per @quickthrowman recommendation I can add that this is the way to go for an electric hot water heater having installed many of these Intermatic time clocks. The old ones were analog and one can hear a clicking but they do make them digital now, YMMV.
bokohut··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
As a former electrician turned software engineer and serial entrepreneur I have always been conscious of my utilities consumption. Per Lorde Kelvin one can only improve what one measures and there are many things most people in society complain about yet those individuals could improve if they just measured; the data doesn't lie, people do.

Around about 2006, after being in my newly built home for a few years, I began to ask the questions that many more are just starting to ask now about their utilities. Having had an extensive background in residential and commercial electrical work I knew the options then were limited to measure home consumption digitally but I stumbled upon TED, The Energy Detective. In 2007 I installed TED in my panels and it has been running ever since. I initially only used it as a curiosity item, much akin to many Tesla Solar+PW users today in checking the app for production and consumption data, never before available in such a simple near real-time form of access. TED did however earn it keep in helping me deduce electrical draw issues when systems within the house were changed alongside just other general consumption curiosity.

In 2016 I got serious and started logging all of my utilities at the first of every month directly from my meters and I also cross collected utility bill data into a spreadsheet. That spreadsheet is now large but the information is invaluable in providing me an aggregate collection specifics to me and my family only over that time. Another side story in itself are the errors I have discovered and reported, some of those errors have benefited me greatly, once again you can only know such things through measuring and monitoring. All of this effort was my LONG GAME preparation for going near fossil fuel free and energy independent at my home when I found the correct solution for my needs.

In 2018 we went fully electric with our personal road vehicles. I installed the largest wall charger at the time which supported 220V up to 70A. This of course spiked our home usage at times however free supercharging was a great bonus and still is. Yes, we were early adopters of a fully electric vehicle family now for over 6 years and have driven hundreds of thousands of miles combined across the U.S. and Canada. I am still amazed at how ignorant people are about charging infrastructure since the fossil fuel industry has brainwashed people's expectations with gas stations on every corner. I have referred many an EV owner and while the program no longer exists I still refer people to electric, just referred a CT a few weeks back.

As time passed so too did my roof age and those here aware of asphalt shingle degradation know builder selections rarely last. In 2020 I started down the solar roof planning journey which had me upgrading all aging appliances to EnergyStar and in August of 2021 the solar roof was installed with two PWs. This led me to refactor my spreadsheet to now include my personal generation and consumption which the new system was providing me. Here I mention the TED again because this old still functioning device had provided me with years of historical data and now I would use it to compare the numbers from the new system. Yes, I found discrepancies that no one had found before and those issues had to be resolved within the new system; a new more accurate CT device was required as well as firmware changes. You may be able to hear me still smiling from this near energy independent choice.

My choices have guided my curiosity which has guided my choices and this is still so extremely relevant today in that I have a unique energy loss problem of which I intend to solve through my own energy storage device I am building. Everything provable in life boils down to either science or math so if the science and math check out then it is only the implementation that matters to reach one's goal. I am applying my software, hardware, electronics, and electrical experience as a unique subject matter expert to build something that solves my problem through the dog-food method. Once I have hashed out all the basic issues with this simple "complex system" I am building I will then apply my entrepreneurial talents once again, that whole ‘serial’ thing. You likely know what happens next given the world's growing awareness of a pursuit that I have long had devoted interest in represented by the choices I have made solely from monitoring and measuring. Thanks Kelvin!

Mr Pfluger of Texas "Are renewables baseload capable?"

Dr Lott "Renewables are not 24/7/365 capable in an economic way, technically as an engineer I can design you a system but then we have to pay for it. So what we find is you want a mix of renewables because they are cheap when they are there, you want to compliment them with storage and you want compliment them with firm dispatchable power that can be there 24/7/365 and design the markets to that everyone can get paid effectively to keep their systems well maintained and online."

...

Hon. Clark "With regard to the RTOs, taking off from where Dr Lotts was, I agree with everything that was said, there be mix of efficiency, demand response, solar, batteries, renewables and dispatchable capacity designing a market around that is extraordinarily difficult because the markets are designed to run what's cheapest to run right now and that has been a 20 year process trying to get those market signals correct."

In the end someone has to take the risk and do it as our world is only the way it is today because of entrepreneurs that took the risks. This forum has more than a few serial risk takers I deduce, including myself.

bokohut··on Ask HN: Why do message queue-based architectures seem less popular now?
"If people have experience designing or implementing greenfield systems based on message queues, I'd be curious to hear about it."

Ok, you asked.

It was early Summer 1997 and I had just graduated college with a computer information systems degree. I was employed at the time as a truck driver doing deliveries to Red Lobster and my father was not happy and offered me double my current pay and guaranteed 40 hours per week to return to work for him as an electrician. I returned to work with my Dad for the Summer but after 14+ years of electrical work with him I decided I needed to get a job with computers. Labor day weekend of 1997 I blasted out over 40 resumes and on Tuesday 9/9/97 I had my first interview at a small payments startup dotcom in Wilmington Delaware, the credit card capital of the world at that time. I was hired on the spot and started that day as employee #5 and was the first software hire for the company yet I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I was tasked with creating a program that could take payments from a TCPIP WAN interface and proxy it back out over serial modems to Visa and batch ACH files to the U.S. FED. This started as a monolith design and we were processing automated clearing house as well as credit cards by late 1997. I would continue in this architectural design and sole software developer support of this critical 100% uptime system for many years. Somewhere around mid 1998 volume started to increase and the monolith design experienced network socket congestion, the volume from the firehose continued to increase and I was the sole guy tasked with solving it. That volume increase came from a little known company at the time, PayPal. Since the 'mafia' was very demanding they knew I was the guy however management isolated me since the 'mafia' demanded extensive daily reporting that only the guy who built the platform could provide. This however took a backseat to the network connection issues which were growing at an increasing rate. I was involved in a lot of technology firsts as a result and herein starts the queue story. After processing payments for Microsoft TechEd too in 1998 I was given an NT Option Pack CD. I was constantly seeking a solution to reduce the network congestion on the monolith and within this option pack was something called "Microsoft Message Queue". I spent several months nonstop of nights and weekends redesigning the entire system using an XML interface API from the ground up while writing individual services that read from an ingress queue and output to and egress queue, this structure is now know as microservices and this design solved all the load problems since it scaled extremely well. This new redesigned system had many personal experience enhancements added such as globally unique identifiers as well as the API being fully extensible but the greatest unseen win was the ability to 100% recreate software bugs since all message passing was recorded. Paypal ended up leaving us in ?2003? for JPMorgan after the majority holder refused to sell to the 'mafia'. Some years later I was informed by several management executives that Paypal also offered to exclusively hire only me but I was of course never informed of that.

I have many a business horror story however in over a decade of using MSMQ at my first payments company, 1998-2010, I only had one data corruption event in the queue broker which required me to reverse engineer the MSMQ binary and thus file format to recover live payments records. This corruption was linked to bad ECC memory on one of those beige 1U Compaq servers that many here likely recall.

This story may reveal my age but while my ride has been exciting it isn't over yet as so many opportunities still exist. A rolling rock gathers no moss!

bokohut··on Grief is not a process with five stages. It is shattered glass
I too lost my first parent back in March, my Dad. It has taken a mental and physical toll on me personally in which I question myself for not taking more time when I had it, hindsight 20/20 pounding on me nonstop and absolutely nothing I can do about it now. This is over and above being the chosen responsible sibling that is now expected to be there for everyone AND handle his affairs knowing how he functioned.

I am fortunate to have started working with my Dad when I was around 7 years of age. He was a master electrician and started his own business in the 1970s after realizing he could do it better. Outside of school and sports I worked with him everyday doing electrical work until I went off to college. He was not happy when I decided to go off to school for computer programming in the early 1990s which unknowingly then shattered his business dream of “& Son”. At his celebration of life I had so many electricians approach me that were overly grateful to finally meet me as they informed me that I was all my Dad talked about all the time. I had no idea and these relived moments in my mind have been my solace.

I will never truly be the same and the reasoning for me cuts even deeper as a serial entrepreneur as my current startup has returned me to my electrical roots and with every forward step of progress I make I must accept that my father will never get to see this energy storage creation his son invented. I now move forward with my efforts in his honor because without his love and guidance I would not be where I am today.

Damn was this difficult to type. Miss you Dad.

bokohut··on Ask HN: What would you spend your time working on if you didn't need money?
A few days back "Where are the builders?" was asked and I was going to chime in there but then today this comes up which correlates, good timing. I too was a Nintendo and Lego kid that took it to extremes, I still play with Legos today as they are great for mock ideas and concepts.

My lifestyle and past choices now afford me all my time as I made great sacrifices for many years saving prolifically while others accrued more and more debt chasing the Jones. Apparently this is called FIRE now but I was doing it long before the acronym.

I have been a problem solver my entire life and have both reverse engineered many things but more importantly I have built a vast variety of personal and professional solutions using mechanics, electronics, technology, automation, and more. I am now building and patenting an energy storage device of my own design given the problem that I personally have which one can likely deduce. I am in absolutely no hurry as all my time is mine to invest where I see fit and as such I am my own boss with ONLY the goal of solving my problem.

For those with the entrepreneurial mindset, exactly like my own, I’ll answer your implicit question from the above reading: "Yes". Once I have my device functioning and it performs as I designed it to the satisfaction of my requirements then a business opportunity unfolds. Given my past choices I am referred to professionally as a serial entrepreneur so I may as well apply my time to my interests and keep solving problems. The difference now however is that I have zero anxiety in my pursuit of my problem since the goal is the objective, not money.
