bokkies··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
About time really, living in the Western Cape in South Africa (similar climate to California) and its mind blowing how much of the best most productive land is used for wine production. With some of the highest fetal alcohol rates in the world, cheapest alcohol and most dangerous roads due to drink driving it's time we take a hard look at whether it is worth it as a society. Farm workers in these areas can't afford nutritious food because the best land is used for producing wine for export mostly to benefit foreign land owners (here's looking at you Richard Branson, etc) instead of growing food...seems pretty crazy really.

bokkies··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
Popular in South Africa also and remains one of the very few credit card processors where you can bill in USD and remit in ZAR (no Stripe in SA)

bokkies··on Neutron scattering explains why gluten-free pasta falls apart (2025)
There are some corn/rice pastas that are pretty close to the real deal. Sure a seasoned pasta officianado could tell the difference, but we have gluten intolerant in the house so predominantly eat gluten free pastas. Never had a visitor or kids friends complaining (and kids will complain about anything). Happily chow down. There are also some pretty good grain free varieties made from tapioca and egg, we get lasagne sheets that are approved of by the only real Italian I known, they maintain the chewy/rubbery texture of lasagne well.
bokkies··on Hindenburg’s Smoking Room
I remember flying in the 80s (and early nineties in parts of Europe) and always got 'air-sick' which made flying awful. Only after smoking was banned did I realise I wasn't motion sickness but it was instead poisoning from the smokers around me. My parents would book non-smoking seats and we'd be 1 row in front of the smokers...wild times
bokkies··on DeepSeek v4
Apparently glm5.1 and qwen coder latest is as good as opus 4.6 on benchmarks. So I tried both seriously for a week (glm Pro using CC) and qwen using qwen companion. Thought I could save $80 a month. Unfortunately after 2 days I had switched back to Max. The speed (slower on both although qwen is much faster) and errors (stupid layout mistakes, inserting 2 footers then refusing to remove one, not seeing obvious problems in screenshots & major f-ups of functionality), not being able to view URLs properly, etc. I'll give deepseek a go but I suspect it will be similar. The model is only half the story. Also been testing gpt5.4 with codex and it is very almost as good as CC... better on long running tasks running in background. Not keen on ChatGPT codex 'personality' so will stick to CC for the most part.
bokkies··on Fuck Facebook, Again
It reads as a stream of thought. I quite enjoyed it. He can't get his kids off the computer, are they gaming? Or on Facebook (unlikely given their ages). Sounds like the alternative they've been given is cleaning the house. My kid is not at that age nor does she have a device, but I hope that as she grows older we can maintain some of the same interests to keep a connection doing fun stuff...including gaming but mostly outdoors, we can dream
bokkies··on List animals until failure
Since this accepts all marine, freshwater and sky animals (birds) also this could take a very long time. For a bit more of a challenge in a shorter time list all animals starting with a particular letter. Time yourself a couple minutes to put some pressure on. Challenge your friends and family!
bokkies··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
What are devs using to run Gemini agents in vscode? 2.5pro on Cline/Roo was pretty buggy compared to Claude/gpt4/5 (also using Cline /roo), kept getting stuck in loops outputting repeated text and many editing issues, and much much worse than Claude code or codex. Has it gotten better? Is there a better way of using Gemini in vscode?

bokkies··on Volkswagen gates a new vehicle's full horsepower behind monthly subscription
Not just nickel and diming with cars, in Germany/Switzerland/Austria you have to pay to use toilets in service stations, showers in campsites (2min hot water per payment) and dozens of other micro payments for things that are free even in 3rd world countries. Nothing like having a kid who's desperate for the toilet and having to scratch for the right change to get in.
bokkies··on A Slice of Bread as a Yogurt Starter? (2022)
I've never used bread as a yogurt starter, but I have used yogurt to kickoff a starter to bake sourdough bread. Takes a few days before the starter starts growing nicely but makes sense it can go both ways.

bokkies··on Do not download the app, use the website
Needed a new SIM in the UK recently so ordered a pay as you go one from Vodafone. Discovered to my horror that the new payg 'plus' can only be used with an app (that's locked to UK Google play Store) and a credit card for monthly recurring payments. No possibility of buying credit on a website or In store. Presumably so Vodafone can slurp up credit card details and all the juicy data mentioned in this article. Tossed in the bin and found a regular old school payg sim that I can top up with cash from a corner shop, but presumably this won't be possible for much longer.

bokkies··on Death by AI
Back in 2015 I walked 2 miles to a bowling alley tagged on Google maps (in Northwich, England) with my then gf...imagine our surprise when we walked in to a steamy front room and reception desk, my gf asks 'is this the bowling alley' to which a glistening man in a tank top replies 'this is a gay and lesbian sauna love'. We beat a hasty retreat but I imagine they were having more fun than bowling in there

Toy's R Us 'R' still in most the big malls in South Africa. Was dragged around just the other day. Haven't changed much since the 80s/90s
bokkies··on An investigation into egg prices
I have 20 hens and 2 roosters (living in a country village where neighbours like the authentic rural vibes) I buy 50kg of feed every 6 weeks for (equivalent)$23. Outside of winter we average 7-12 eggs a day and in winter about 2-4 a day. What we sell covers the cost of feed (except for winter)The birds free range all day and have large compost heaps and worm farms to gorge themselves on. Before moving to the country we had 4 hens in a city garden which worked out to a greater cost per egg due to the lesser free-ranging opportunities but still cheaper than a caged egg from a supermarket. Once you have your own hens you'll never go back to factory eggs!
bokkies··on Sol-Ark manufacturer reportedly disables all Deye inverters in the US
I have a sunsynk inverter which is the same hardware as deye but apparently different software. I have it hooked up to a Pi4b running home assistant using this https://github.com/kellerza/sunsynk and it has no direct internet access. I can connect to my home network using tailscale to monitor power usage and generation through the HA app if I'm not at home
